JOHNSON COUNTY, Kansas — Roughly 5,000 mail-in ballots will be tabulated in Johnson County Friday.The results from the mail-in ballots will be released beginning at 8 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m.The ballots could widen the margin between the two leading Republican primary candidates for governor: Secretary of State Kris Kobach and Gov. Jeff Colyer.When polls closed on Tuesday, slow reporting in Johnson County delayed results. Once the numbers came out the following morning, Kobach led by fewer than 200 votes.Since then, the numbers have been contested, but a 41 Action News county-by-county tally shows Kobach still in the lead.The Secretary of State’s office said it should have all the advance ballots that were mailed in, and any other unofficial election results that were not previously reported on election day.Provisional ballots will be reviewed and counted next week by individual counties. But when she heard about the Florida school shooting last week, it hit close to home.Judson, 23, graduated from Florida State University, which had a school shooting a few years ago. She also is a 2012 graduate of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, where 17 students and faculty were killed last Wednesday.Her family friend Meadow Pollack was among them. A judge dismissed the charges Friday after the state attorney general's office said prosecutors no longer had any credible witnesses. Curtis Flowers was released from custody Dec. 16 for the first time in 22 years. Flowers was convicted four times in the 1996 killings of four people at a furniture store in the north Mississippi city of Winona: twice for individual slayings and twice for all four killings. There were two mistrials. Each conviction was overturned. The U.S. Supreme Court overturned the last conviction citing racial bias in jury selection. 710

So what now?"He didn't call a ball or a strike, he said you know I'm just going to let you guys do this," said former U.S. Attorney Chuck LaBella. LaBella explained Attorney Robert Mueller is leaving it up to the Department of Justice to decide."I actually think it's the right call for him to make because he is not in the Department of Justice, he's a former prosecutor, he knows what the rules are, he knows what the standard is, but this is a Department of Justice policy decision," LaBella said. LaBella worked on a similar investigation, during former President Bill Clinton's administration, regarding campaign finance abuses.When it comes to how much information can be released, LaBella said the public will probably only see 30-40% of the findings. "People calling for the public wholesale release of this need to really check the law, because the law is pretty clear,", he explained, saying grand jury materials, including interviews, are private."It could potentially hurt people who only had tangential involvement in this. They were initially suspected of bad conduct," he said.
