Instead of satisfying cravings, unique vending machines across the country are being used to do some good this holiday season. They're called the “Giving Machines,” and these vending machines are filled with items for people in need and make donating to charity as easy as buying a snack. All you have to do is punch in the number for the item you want to donate and swipe your card. The rest is taken care of.Sharon Eubank, President of Latter-day Saints Charities, says the idea for the machines was born three years ago and they were first only placed in a couple locations, including Salt Lake City and New York City. “You know instead of having a vending machine where you would go and buy something for yourself, what if you could use a machine that could actually give something to somebody else?” said Eubank.Whether you have a few bucks to spare or are wanting to give back in a bigger way, the machines feature items of varying prices that you can choose from. Items range in price from to 0 and include everything from food, clothing, medicine, hygiene supplies, sporting equipment and livestock. All donations go to local and global charities.“So, there are some global partners, which include UNICEF, WaterAid, Water for People and Church World Service. They have outlets all over the world,” said Eubank. “But in every location, there’s also local charities so that you can buy things that benefit people right in the community where you live.”Eubank says almost all the charities in which the donations go to are actually outside The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which created the machines as part of its #LightTheWorld campaign. “This year we put in a few things that we donate to. But one of the great ideas about this is to say that there is so much polarization in our communities right now, what can we do that isn’t benefiting ourselves, but can build unity around the things that we all agree on?” said Eubank. “And so, we wanted to build these machines as a gift from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but to benefit, really other people, so it’s not viewed as self-serving. We want to do things that build bridges in our communities.”The church says 100 percent of donations go directly to its partner charities for the purchased items or services of greater need based on their discretion. According to Eubank, the church asks the organizations that receive the donations to stay within what people bought or there are acceptable substitutes. “So, you may buy a soccer ball, and maybe they don’t need soccer balls in that area, but what they really need are basketballs,” said Eubank. “So, we have an acceptable substitution list, which we let people know about, and then we give them the list of what was purchased and the total check.”Last year, the machines raised more than .3 million for local and global charities, according to Eubank. This year, she says there are 10 locations and the church’s goal is to raise million. As of Dec. 12, she said they had raised .438 million. “But the more important statistic to me is that there’ve been 101,000 individual transactions, so it isn’t so much that people donated a lot, but they donated a blanket or something small and 101,000 people decided, yeah I’ll do a 'Giving Machine' and so that to me is the greater statistic,” said Eubank. It's been more than a century since Babe Ruth started his baseball career, but the Bambino is still breaking records.A Babe Ruth New York Yankees jersey from 1928-1930 fetched .64 million at auction Saturday, making it the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia ever sold, according to the auction house. The previous record was a 1920 Babe Ruth jersey that went for .4 million.The record-breaking jersey was part of a collection of artifacts related to "The Sultan of Swat," as Ruth was also known, sold by Hunt Auctions at Yankee Stadium. It's possible April of 2019 will prove to be an historic month for renewable energy.For centuries, coal has been one of the primary sources of energy in the United States. But in recent years, energy sources such as wind, solar and hydro have been catching up.Bruce Bohannan is hoping his home will eventually be carbon neutral, which means it'd solely be powered by renewable energy. It's a process he started 10 years ago when he invested in solar panels. Bohannan’s house is not your average American house."You can see a little bit at the very top of the house, that was our first phase of solar panels," Bohannan said."I have a daughter who will outlive me into the world of the future, and I really put them on for my daughter's future... for her climate future," Bohannan added.A decade later, Bohannan is witnessing a change he had always hoped for to lower carbon emissions.In April -- for the first time in U.S. history -- forecasters say renewable energy sources generated more electricity than coal."It's an indicator of what's to come," Dennis Wamsted, an energy analyst for the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, said.His claim is based on a short-term forecast of data for the month of April. Date from the U.S. Energy Information Administration shows renewable energy surpassing coal production. "The coal industry 10 years ago generated about 50 percent of the nation's electricity. And in the past 10 years that percentage has dropped from 50 percent to this year, EIA [Energy Information Administration] is saying about 24 percent," Wamsted said.Electricity generation can be broken into four main categories: Natural gas generates 35 percent of our electricity; coal generates 24 percent; nuclear power 20 percent; and renewable sources generate 18 percent (3 percent is other). The percentage for coal is predicted to decrease in the coming years, whereas renewable energy is expected to do the opposite. Wamsted predicts renewable energy will surpass coal for good in three years.“Coal's costs are going up, and renewable costs are going down which gives me a great deal of confidence that this transition is going to continue into the future," Wamsted said.So what happened in April that spiked renewable energy production? Wamsted says, think about the changing seasons.April is a big month for snow melt which powers hydroelectricity. In many places, there's often more wind in the springtime to power wind turbines. And solar energy increases in the spring with more direct daylight in the United States.The coal industry's production also plays a role. Many plants shut down for maintenance in the spring, since most people around the country aren't cranking up heat or the A.C.While this data signals a big milestone for renewables, it's not a total surprise. Clean energy is now cheaper than coal because technology has improved, and manufacturers are more efficient.Energy Program Director Rob Sargent with Environment America says the coal industry, on the other hand, is facing a grim future.“It's been declining steadily, and uh, coal plants are shutting down left and right. Nobody is building new ones," Sargent said.The possible end of the coal industry has many concerned for their livelihood, but there is hope for the American workforce.A report done by nonpartisan business group 'Environmental Entrepreneurs' shows nearly every U.S. state saw an increase in clean energy jobs last year. In fact, jobs involving renewable energy outnumbered fossil fuel jobs three to one, and employers expect job growth to continue. "There is no question that right now in America there are more jobs in the clean energy industry than there are in the fossil fuel industry," Sargent said.Change can be challenging, but Sargent believes the increase in clean energy positions will ease the transition into renewables as a staple provider of energy. And clean energy proponents like Bohannan are convinced the change is only for the better."Anything we can do to leave carbon in the ground is the right answer for the earth. We need to drastically stop emitting carbon if we're going to have a positive effect on our climate chances over the next 50 years," Bohannan said.The United States is not the first nation in this energy transition. Renewable energy has already surpassed coal in the United Kingdom, and the country expects coal-fired energy generation will be completely cut off by 2025. 4450

If you have filled up your vehicle's gas tank in recent days, you probably paid more than you did last month per gallon for gas. Throughout the United States, gas prices are on the rise with no dip in sight. According to AAA figures, the average national price for a gallon of gas is .76. The price of gas is up 30 cents a gallon over the last month. Drivers in California have particularly seen a large increase. Prices there have increased by 55 cents to .87 per gallon. AAA says that unexpected and planned maintenance have contributed to an increase in fuel prices.Gas prices are also up 10 cents from this time last year. Summertime gas prices peaked at nearly a gallon last summer.In some regions, gas prices can jump without any notice.
