SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two 7-Eleven stores located within two miles of each other in San Diego were robbed by a man with a gun and the suspect in each incident was at-large Saturday morning.The first occurred at 11:10 p.m. in the 4200 block of Voltaire Street, near Catalina Boulevard, in the Point Loma Heights neighborhood, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.The suspect walked into the store and approached the clerk, then lifted his shirt and showed the clerk the handle of a gun in his waistband and demanded money. The clerk gave the suspect an unknown amount of money and the man ran out of the store southbound on Catalina Boulevard, Heims said.The second robbery occurred at 12:45 a.m. Saturday at 3185 Midway Drive, near Sports Arena Boulevard, when a man walked into the store, lifted up his shirt and pulled a gun from his waistband, placed it on the counter facing the clerk and demanded money, Heims said.The clerk gave the gunman an unknown amount of money and the suspect put the gun back in his waistband then ran from the store northbound on East Drive into the Target parking lot, Heims said.In both robberies, the suspect was described as a white man, late 20s to early 30s, 6 feet tall and 180 pounds with short brown hair and a mustache. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 98-year-old woman is being evicted from her Ocean Beach home after living there for nearly three decades. Betty Morse moved into her tiny Ocean Beach cottage back in the late 1980’s. After her husband died, she needed a place she could afford. “I was by myself, but I managed,” Morse said. “I could walk to work.” Morse said the rent was about 0 when she moved in. “It was a beautiful place to live because you could walk to the beach and watch the sunset,” she said. This little place by the beach that fits her so well was supposed to be her last stop. "See, I figured I'd lived a wonderful life in Ocean Beach, and I want to live and die here, you know, because I feel so comfortable here,” Morse said. “It's my little house, and it's all I know.” Morse said this year she was asked to sign a new rental agreement. Her family had some disagreements with a couple of changes made by the landlord: one was a no-smoking addendum. Morse told 10News after decades of being a smoker at 98-years-old, she quit so she could stay in the home. Despite her efforts, she said after the attorneys went back and forth a few times, she received a 90-day-notice in July terminating her tenancy. Morse doesn't know what to do if she’s forced to leave. “I don’t know who will rent to me because in two months I’ll be 99 and they are not going to be happy to rent an apartment,” she said. During her 30 years at the property, Morse said she never had a problem with the rental. A fixture in the neighborhood, she knows San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and his mother. "She said, 'Kevin, I want a picture of Betty with you' and he said 'OK mom,'” she said. “He came over to the step and she said, 'She's very unsteady on her feet, Kevin, don't let her fall.'" Morse said her rent was always paid on time, a trait she picked up from the one man she ever loved. "Before he died, when he was in the ICU, he had a tube, but he wrote, don't forget to pay the rent.” A model tenant, Morse is using Section 8 housing assistance to help cover her rent. According to the termination notice she showed to 10News, the owner is electing to opt out of the Section 8 program and not renew the lease. It states the owner will be conducting substantial renovations to the unit and following the renovations the owner desires to rent the unit at a higher rental value, being that of the market rate value. The notice states the owner will be opting out of Section 8 entirely."They clearly state on their 90-day notice that their just cause is they don't want to comply with Section 8,” said Pamela Macias with San Diego County Evictions. Macias is working with Morse and her family to try and keep her in the home. "She's willing to pay market rent and just for no reason at all they want her out,” Macias said. Morse does have children, and instead of being out on the street she could move in with one of them. However, nearing the century mark she worries about being a burden.“I don't want to be in a nursing home either,” she said. “I still want to be independent.” The 90-day-notice has expired and Morse is still living in the property. The property owner filed an unlawful detainer, which is basically an eviction lawsuit. Team 10 contacted the owners of the property; they declined to comment due to pending litigation. Housing Assistance in San Diego The San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC) states that more than 6,000 landlords are participating in the rental assistance program. Most landlords don’t usually stop participating in the program, but it does happen, according to the commission. They say the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Rental Assistance program includes options to meet the needs of both landlords and tenants. Landlords can increase rents for rental-assistance tenants as they would for market-rate tenants as long as 60 days’ notice is provided to the rental assistance tenants and the new rent is determined to be reasonable.According to SDHC, to evaluate the reasonableness of the rent it compares the requested rent to the rents on other units on the premises with tenants who do not receive rental assistance. Right now, landlords are not required to accept tenants who receive Section 8 rental assistance. However, in August 2019 a new amendment to San Diego’s source of income ordinance will prevent landlords from declining a tenant based only on the household receiving rental assistance. “It opens large opportunities for our clients to receive assistance and utilize their voucher in the City of San Diego,” said Carrie Leverett, director of the SDHC rental assistance department. “It allows our clients to maintain affordable housing and find affordable housing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 17-year-old boy accused of killing a Carlsbad woman on a popular hiking trail denied the allegations against him during a virtual arraignment Thursday morning.Through his attorney, the teen denied all allegations. He faces charges in connection with the Nov. 23 death of 68-year-old Lisa Thorborg.Thorborg was on a morning walk at Hosp Grove Trail when Carlsbad police investigators said she was attacked and stabbed to death.On Dec. 14, Carlsbad police announced the arrest of a 17-year-old boy in the case. Little information on the teen was released, but police noted the suspect is a Carlsbad resident.Thorborg's death struck a chord with many in the community. In the days following her death, a large group came to honor her by finishing the walk she started.The woman’s death also left many neighbors upset and concerned about their safety while on that trail.During Thursday’s arraignment, the judge also granted the teen's request to two phone calls -- one to his Mom, the other to his grandmother.ABC 10News learned Thorborg’s family was also listening to the hearing through the phone.Another hearing in the case is set for Dec. 22. 1173
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two pregnant women in San Diego County have been hospitalized due to flu complications, the county's Health and Human Services Agency announced Wednesday. A 40-year-old woman spent 16 days in the intensive care unit and a 30-year-old woman spent nine days in the ICU. Both women were unvaccinated, in their third trimesters and contracted influenza A. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pregnant women have some of the highest risk of developing flu complications if they remain unvaccinated. “That is why they're one of the groups for which vaccination isextremely important," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "Changes in the immune system, heart and lungs during pregnancy make pregnant women (and women up to two weeks after delivery) more susceptible to severe illness from the flu, which could require hospitalization." Officials from the CDC and the Health and Human Services Agency suggest that pregnant women receive the flu vaccine at any point in their pregnancy. However, the nasal spray flu vaccine is not recommended for pregnant women. Flu cases in the county ticked up during the week of Dec. 9-15, according to the county's weekly influenza report. Confirmed flu cases totaled 290 compared to 199 the previous week. The county's overall total of confirmed flu cases is at 940, well behind the 1,641 cases at this time last flu season. Everyone 6 months or older is recommended to get the flu vaccine each year. In addition to pregnant women, health officials strongly advise the vaccination for people with a heightened risk of serious flu complications, like people older than 65 and people with chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes. County residents can get vaccinated at doctors' offices, retail pharmacies, community clinics and the county's public health centers. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Zoo Safari Park's youngest southern white rhino began integrating with the rest of the park's rhino herd Wednesday, meeting a rhino other than his mother for the first time since his birth 10 weeks ago.Edward and his mother, Victoria, have remained sequestered from the rest of the herd since his birth in July to allow the two to bond and ensure he builds weight and stamina. The calf's weight has nearly quadrupled since then and he has only entered the Safari Park's rhino enclosure with Victoria.Edward met Helene, an adult female southern white rhino, after she sparred with Victoria, who was very protective of her calf, according to the zoo's animal care staff. They will continue introducing him to the rest of the Safari Park's crash of rhinos as he gets larger and older.RELATED: San Diego Zoo's baby southern white rhino charges into life at the park"While Victoria knows the other rhinos, Edward has only observed them from a distance," Safari Park Lead Keeper Jonnie Capiro said. "It's time to get Edward acclimated to his crash. We chose to have Helene meet him first, as she is closely bonded with Victoria."Edward is the 99th southern white rhino calf born at the Safari Park and the first such calf to be born through artificial insemination in North America. His birth represents a step toward the zoo's longer-term goal of recovering the northern white rhino, a distant relative of the southern white rhino. Only two northern white rhinos still exist on the planet and both are female.Zoo officials plan to use stem cells and preserved northern white rhino cells to birth a northern white rhino calf within 10-20 years.
