(AP) — A medical team at a southwestern Louisiana hospital worked through the night to care for 19 tiny babies as Hurricane Laura slammed the region. Officials at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital for Women first had to transfer the 19 babies in the neonatal intensive care unit to the main hospital in the system after it became clear that the women's hospital could be swallowed in storm surge. Then the team of two neonatal nurse practitioners, 14 nurses, three respiratory therapists, and a doctor cared for the babies while the wind howled around them. But Dr. Juan Bossano said the babies seemed to weather the storm just fine. 638
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Former Rep. Darrell Issa announced Thursday the launch of an exploratory committee in a challenge to Rep. Duncan Hunter in the 50th Congressional District. “I have formally launched an exploratory committee for the 50th Congressional District in California,” Issa's website reads. “I have received such a tremendous outpouring of encouragement from supporters inside the district, and around the state and across the Nation.”Issa announced in 2018 that he would not seek re-election in California's 49th Congressional District. In September of 2018, the 64-year-old Issa was nominated by the Trump administration to lead the U.S. Trade and Development Agency.RELATED: Reaction to Rep. "Cody Hidalgo, as a short-term employee of Roman Stoneworks, has engaged in a social media campaign with false claims that are verifiably untrue. This individual was not terminated because of a meme posted on Facebook on Sunday, October 20. After the posting of that meme, he worked the following Monday, Tuesday and part of Wednesday. Mr. Hidalgo actually walked off the job on Wednesday, October 23 of his own volition, and over his manager's objection. Roman Stoneworks and its officers desired to keep Mr. Hidalgo in its employment to perform his duties. He abandoned a job in progress and that was how his employment with Roman Stoneworks actually came to an end.Unfortunately this individual, who was employed for less than 2 months, is now seeking to exploit the publicity that this false claim has created. He has started a Gofundme page to attempt to capitalize on his newfound exposure. Meanwhile, Roman Stoneworks and its owner and personnel have been subjected to significant monetary damage, as well as threats, profanity and harassment by phone and email. Due to the backlash from these false claims, my client's webpage has had to be removed, and the individuals involved have been inundated with calls and emails. If Mr. Hidalgo chose to tell the truth to all of the people who have now heard his false claims, then the matter may be able to be resolved amicably. Unfortunately this does not appear to be the route chosen by this individual. My clients have needlessly suffered based on these allegations." 1529
(CNN) -- Boxer Patrick Day died Wednesday, four days after he was knocked out during his bout with Charles Conwell on Saturday night in Chicago.Day, 27, succumbed to a traumatic brain injury he suffered that night, according to a statement from his promoter, Lou DiBella of DiBella Entertainment."He was surrounded by his family, close friends and members of his boxing team, including his mentor, friend and trainer Joe Higgins," DiBella said in a statement. "On behalf of Patrick's family, team, and those closest to him, we are grateful for the prayers, expressions of support and outpouring of love for Pat that have been so obvious since his injury."In a Twitter post addressed to Day on Tuesday, Conwell wrote he "never meant this to happen to you.""All I wanted to do was win. If I could take it all back, I would," Conwell wrote. "No one deserves this to happen to them. I replay the fight over and over in my head thinking what if this never happened and why did it happen to you."After Conwell, a 2016 Olympic boxer, knocked Day out in the 10th round, Day appeared to be down for several minutes as a medical team rushed in to assess his injuries. Eventually he was taken out of the ring on a stretcher, and transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.DiBella said that Day didn't need to box as he came from a good family, was educated and could have made a living in some other way."He chose to box, knowing the inherent risks that every fighter faces when he or she walks into a boxing ring," DiBella said. "Boxing is what Pat loved to do. It's how he inspired people and it was something that made him feel alive."Conwell was in control of the fight in Wintrust Arena from the beginning, according to ESPN.Before he became a professional fighter, Day was a highly decorated amateur. He won two Nationals titles, the New York Golden Gloves tournament and was an Olympic Team alternate, all in 2012.He turned pro in 2013 and captured the WBC Continental Americas championship in 2017 and the IBF Intercontinental championship in 2019. In June 2019, he was rated in the top 10 by both the WBC and IBF. As of Saturday, Day's record stood at 17-4-1, with six knockouts.Dibella said it is "very difficult to explain away or justify the dangers of boxing at a time like this.""While we don't have the answers, we certainly know many of the questions, have the means to answer them, and have the opportunity to respond responsibly and accordingly and make boxing safer for all who participate," DiBella Entertainment said."This is a way we can honor the legacy of Pat Day."CORRECTION: A previous version of this story misidentified Patrick Day's promoter.
