Lawyers for CNN and the Trump administration are awaiting an initial ruling on the network's federal lawsuit over press access to the White House. And they're going to have to wait a little while longer.Judge Timothy J. Kelly heard nearly two hours of oral arguments about CNN's request for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction on Wednesday. Then he said court would reconvene Thursday at 3 p.m.But on Thursday afternoon, he rescheduled the next hearing for Friday at 10 a.m.If Kelly grants CNN's requests on Friday, CNN chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta would get his press pass back for a short period of time. If it's denied, Acosta's pass will remain suspended.Either way, this is just round one. By filing for a temporary restraining order, CNN is seeking what's known as "emergency relief." CNN is arguing that Acosta's First Amendment rights are being violated every day he is banned from White House grounds.CNN is also asking for "permanent relief," meaning a declaration from the judge that Trump's revocation of Acosta's press pass was unconstitutional. This legal conclusion could protect other reporters from retaliation by the administration. But the judge will not be ruling on that yet. Kelly is only expected to weigh in on the temporary status of Acosta's press pass.Further hearings are likely to take place in the next few weeks, according to CNN's lawyers. The lawsuit alleges violations of the First and Fifth Amendments.Kelly, a Trump appointee, has been on the federal bench just more than a year now. He was very inquisitive at Wednesday's hearing, asking tough questions of both sides, drilling particularly deep into some of CNN's arguments.A Justice Department lawyer, James Burnham, argued that the Trump White House has the legal right to kick out any reporter at any time for any reason.Burnham, who's been tasked with defending President Trump and several White House aides from CNN and Jim Acosta's lawsuit, was responding to a hypothetical from Kelly. Burnham said that it would be perfectly legal for the White House to revoke a journalist's press pass if it didn't agree with their reporting. "As a matter of law... yes," he said.Burnham's comment in court made the stakes of CNN v. Trump crystal clear.Attorney Theodore Boutrous, representing CNN in court, called Trump's move to revoke Acosta's hard pass "the definition of arbitrariness and capriciousness.""What are the standards?" Boutrous asked. "Rudeness is not a standard. If it were, no one could have gone to the press conference."Boutrous also commented that Trump is "the most aggressive, dare I say rude, person in the room" at press conferences.Burnham said CNN had made an "odd First Amendment injury" claim and suggested that Acosta could do his job "just as effectively" watching the president's appearances piped into a studio on CNN. In response, Boutrous said the DOJ had a "fundamental misconception of journalism." 2971

LEMON GROVE (CNS) - A man was jailed for stealing a deputy's patrol car at the Lemon Grove Patrol Station, sheriff's officials said Sunday. Matthew Brian Porter, 44, was arrested Saturday evening and booked into the San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of evading deputies, theft of an emergency vehicle and fleeing police on a highway in the wrong direction, all felonies, according to jail records. At about 9 p.m., a deputy at the Lemon Grove Patrol Station was unloading his patrol car at the end of his shift, according to Lt. Mike Rand of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. A man then got into the deputy's patrol car and drove away. Deputies spotted the vehicle leaving the station and began a pursuit. But they lost sight of it as it drove eastbound on Broadway. A resident called 911 to report the abandoned patrol car in the 3500 block of Grove Street. Deputies located the vehicle and detained Porter, who allegedly admitted to stealing the patrol car. Porter's bail on the evading charge was set at ,000. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday. 1080

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Doing Christmas on the cheap isn't a bad thing. This year especially, it can be a necessity. KIDS IN QUARANTINE"2020 was rough for everybody," said Las Vegas mom Danielle Willard. She and her husband Benjamin have been fortunate enough to keep their jobs, but their family is still feeling the effects of the pandemic. Their kids are currently quarantined after being exposed to COVID-19, and the family knows they're not alone."Thousands of families go through this in Clark County every day," said Danielle.BIGGER THAN ALL OF USThen there are millions of others around the world. Something their whole family is well aware of thanks to the internet and social media."The kids are now realizing this is global. It's huge. It's bigger than all of us," said Benjamin.MONEY WAS FLYINGSo the Willards are doing things a little different this Christmas."Looking back at everything we bought for the kids in previous years, it was almost like money was flying and they didn't understand the value behind it and where it came from," said Danielle.STOP & THINKSo mom and dad came up with a reasonable budget and gave the kids very specific categories for Christmas gifts: things you need, things you want, books and clothes."We had to help them through the choice. What do you do most with your time? What are your hobbies?" said Benjamin."It makes them stop and think, what's really important to them," said Danielle.HELPING OTHERSThey also added a spot for giving something to someone less fortunate."They were extremely excited to be able to help, especially when we explained not everybody's in the position we are," said Danielle. The Willards say this year's wish list is saving them a lot of money while helping them to reflect on what's important and counting their blessings.NOT BUYING AS MANY GIFTS"There are families that won't have a Christmas at all," said Danielle. Some people may feel an extra emotional burden from not being able to buy as many gifts for loved ones this year, but Psychotherapist Caitlin Carmody says there are other options."There are so many different ways we can show people love and affection. It doesn't have to cost money," said Carmody.CREATING COMBATS ANXIETYInstead of buying presents, Carmody suggests making them with your family."The act of even creating helps combat that anxiety and depression," said Carmody.Quality time is also a gift that's just as meaningful, even if it's done virtually."So if we can reframe it as not something that we're losing, but maybe as a time of growth, or an opportunity to make new traditions and new memories," said Carmody. This story was written by Tricia Kean by KTNV. 2672

LAS VEGAS — Big lavish weddings aren’t in style right now. That’s because the global pandemic has couples rethinking their plans.A new Las Vegas business is offering a unique way to scale back wedding ceremonies in light of COVID-19.I Do Drive Thru Weddings is an Australian-based company that’s branching out in Las Vegas. They host elopements and tiny weddings.Couples can choose their own adventure — they can ump into a limo, vintage vehicle, or anything on wheels and head to a special spot to say “I do.” Couples can also walk to their destination if they prefer.“This is how I Do Drive Thru came to be as we realized getting married is still absolutely an essential business,” said Berlynn Holdmann, the lead officiant in Las Vegas. “It can be done within the limitations and guidelines that are being enforced with social distancing measures.”Couples can skip the cost of a venue, DJ, and catering costs. The average wedding costs come out to 0, Holdmann said. There’s an option to livestream the ceremony, so loved ones can be a part of the celebration from a distance.I Do Drive Thru’s website says they will offer a full refund in the event of a total lockdown. This story was originally published by Kelsey McFarland on KTNV in Las Vegas. 1259
