GREELEY, Colo. — A Colorado woman says she was denied a haircut at a local Great Clips because her baby son was not wearing a mask.Meri Smith decided she was finally ready to get a haircut. It would have been her first one since the COVID-19 pandemic reached the U.S. in March. She made an online appointment at Great Clips, and when she went to the salon to check-in, she was told that her son "can't come in" to the building."They said you can't come in because he's under two and he can't wear a mask," Smith said.Smith said she was confused and humiliated by the situation. As a teacher, she's familiar with Colorado's statewide mask mandate and she knows it doesn't apply to children who are 10 and younger."I just felt rejected. It made me sad and uncomfortable that I couldn't go get a haircut just because my son was a baby," Smith said.A spokesperson for Great Clips released the following statement from Michelle Iacovetta, the COO of Holtzman Enterprises, Inc. and a Great Clips franchisee."Holtzman Enterprises, Inc. does not require children under two years of age to wear a mask in our salons, following guidance from the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics. The misunderstanding of this policy that took place recently in our Greeley salon was unfortunate and disappointing. We will be using this as an educational opportunity with staff to reinforce the details of our mask policy and we would welcome the opportunity to apologize directly to the community member."This story was originally published by Liz Gelardi on KMGH in Denver. 1564

Heading to the beach for Memorial Day weekend? Perhaps you'll be enjoying the sun and sand at one of the top 10 beaches in the USA.For 2018, Kapalua Bay Beach in Maui is No. 1, according to coastal sciences professor Dr. Beach.Dr. Beach, also known as Stephen P. Leatherman, has been releasing an annual list of the United States' top beach destinations since 1991. Leatherman is professor and director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University. He uses 50 criteria to assess the beaches -- from water and sand quality to amenities, pests and views and vistas.Kapalua, a gorgeous white-sand crescent, is billed as perfect for swimming and snorkeling, and fish food and snorkeling gear are available from a concession hut at the north end of the beach.Lined by palm trees, the beach is protected from waves by the "arms" of lava flows, creating an area teeming with colorful fish. The second-ranked beach is nearly 5,000 miles away on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Ocracoke Lifeguarded Beach is located on Ocracoke Island, which is only accessible via private boat or ferry.Rounding out the top three, the mile-long beach at Grayton Beach State Park is located in a 2,000-acre park on Florida's Panhandle. There are 30 cabins available for rent in the park. 1315

GREELEY, Colo. – The parents of Chris Watts will get the opportunity to provide victim impact statements at their son’s sentencing hearing Monday but their attorney will not be allowed to address the court, the judge in the case ruled on Thursday.19th Judicial District Court Judge Marcelo A. Kopcow ruled that Cindy and Ronnie Watts should be able to speak in court Monday and deliver victim impact statements in which they could ask the judge for a more-lenient sentence for their son. They can also deliver such statements through a designee, according to the judge’s order.Judge Kopcow wrote that state law affords the two the right to do so because they are the paternal grandparents of Bella and Celeste, whom Chris Watts pleaded guilty to killing in August along with their mother and his pregnant wife, Shanann Watts. But Kopcow ruled that the attorney for the two won’t be allowed to address the court.Cindy and Ronnie Watts spoke for the first time about their son’s case earlier this week, voicing their frustration with the case and questioning the plea deal their son made with Weld County prosecutors, for which he will be sentenced Monday. They also spoke about their negative perception of their daughter-in-law.Shanann’s family responded by calling the Watts’ statements “vicious, grotesque and utterly false” and said “Shanann’s memory and reputation deserves to be protected.”On Thursday, the woman who claims she was having an affair with Chris Watts spoke The Denver Post. She called what happened to Shanann and her daughters “horrific” and said that Chris had “lied about everything” during their relationship and the period between which Chris dumped his wife and daughter’s bodies at an oil and gas site and his arrest.Chris Watts agreed to plead guilty earlier this month to nine counts, including five counts of first-degree murder and other charges, in exchange for being spared from the death penalty. He is expected to be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole at Monday’s sentencing hearing, which is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. MT. 2114

Hospital nurses near Philadelphia went on strike on Tuesday and Wednesday, airing a grievance over working conditions amid the coronavirus pandemic. On Wednesday, the nurses’ union said they were told they will now be locked out of their jobs through the end of the week. The 800 nurses are employed at the suburban St. Mary’s Medical Center. One of the main sticking points is minimum staffing levels, which is the proportion of patients to nurses in a hospital.“We tell Trinity we need more nurses, in large part because, as Trinity has acknowledged, we’re 15 years behind in wages, and they tell us they can’t afford to pay us a competitive wage,” says Jim Gentile, R.N., a surgical services nurse who has been at St. Mary for more than 35 years. “If they can’t find the money to recruit and retain more nurses, did they magically find several million dollars in the back of a drawer to pay the agency nurses?”Hospitals in the Philadelphia area previously told the Philadelphia Inquirer that they would hire replacement nurses to work if the union goes on strike."We respect the union members’ right to strike, and we remain committed to negotiating in good faith to reach agreement on a fair, consistent and sustainable initial contract for St. Mary nurses. We look forward to the day productive negotiations can resume," said a statement from Trinity Health. 1369

GENEVA (AP) — The U.N. humanitarian office says needs for assistance have ballooned to unprecedented levels this year because of COVID-19, projecting that a staggering 235 million people will require help in 2021.This comes as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and global challenges, including conflicts, forced migration, and the impact of global warming.“The humanitarian system again proved its worth in 2020, delivering food, medicines, shelter, education, and other essentials to tens of millions of people,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres in a press release. “But the crisis is far from over. Humanitarian aid budgets face dire shortfalls as the impact of the global pandemic continues to worsen. Together, we must mobilize resources and stand in solidarity with people in their darkest hour of need.”The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, or OCHA, expects a 40% increase in the number of people in need of such assistance in 2021 compared to this year.OCHA made the projections in its latest annual Global Humanitarian Overview on Tuesday, saying its hopes to reach 160 million of those people in need will cost billion. Still, OCHA says they’ve only raised billion thus far.UN humanitarian chief Mark Lowcock told a U.N. briefing that the U.N. appeal could raise billion by the end of the year, which according to the Associated Press, is billion more than last year.“We can let 2021 be the year of the grand reversal – the unraveling of 40 years of progress – or we can work together to make sure we all find a way out of this pandemic,” Lowcock said. 1621
