(KGTV) - What a difference books can make for the learning and growth of a child. 10News Anchor Kimberly Hunt returned to Imperial Beach Charter School, where students can’t get enough of reading. Nine months ago, they were surprised with a donation of 1,800 books, made by 10News employees and the Scripps Howard Foundation. Each child was able to select two books of their own, with the rest going to the library and classrooms. “Last year, I didn't like to read. But this year I love to read," said 7-year-old Diego. His favorite book is "Hoot Hoot".“It's about owls. They're having a little party," he said.Seven-year-old Adriana loves the adventure of a good book. “My favorite thing about reading is you can imagine stuff while you're reading the book," she said. Her favorite book is "My Weird School". Principal Melissa Griffith says the books have made all the difference to students.“The opportunity for them to learn sounds, to learn words, to take adventures within books, there's really nothing like it and it's so beneficial for our students," said Griffith. “Our students enjoy the books greatly. In addition to that, it allows for additional books to be in our library and also in our classrooms. So in the hands of kids is what we want, and we're so appreciative of that." 1320

Hurricane Zeta made landfall Wednesday afternoon with sustained winds estimated at 110 mph, a category 2 storm. That's just 1 mile from being classified as a category 3 storm, according to the National Hurricane Center. (KGTV) - An altercation over a mask turned ugly at an Imperial Beach taco shop on Thursday night.Just before 10 p.m. at Don Pancho's Taco Shop, surveillance video shows a customer at the walk-up order window. He's using his shirt and sleeve to cover his face."Our cashier says he has to wear a proper face mask. The customer gets upset. The cashier offers a face mask that we have on hand for those who don't have masks. He thinks about it and gets upset," said manager Myra Espinoza.In the video, the man waves his hand, apparently waving off the mask offer, before he begins walking away. Moments later, there is a loud sound."He heard something hit the window, and the window falling and shattering down," said Espinoza.The video revealed the cause: the man took his skateboard and thrust into one of the restaurant's windows."It hurts. That's like my house. It's so disrespectful. I wouldn't go to his house and break his window," said Espinoza.Espinoza says it's not the first time someone has gotten upset over the mask policy."We have sliding windows. One gentleman grabbed the sliding windows so hard, it bounced back," said Espinoza.Still, those types of incidents are rare. Thursday's vandalism is the first time things have turned destructive."It's uncalled for and unnecessary. We're all trying to what's best and keep people safe," said Espinoza.The vandalism totaled about 0 dollars in damage. If you are going to steal someone's identity, choosing one of the most popular cartoon characters in the world is probably the worst identity to steal. For one English police officer, she was not fooled by the fake "Homer Simpson" driver's license. According to the Thames Valley Police, a man being pulled over in Milton Keynes, England handed an officer a driver license with "The Simpsons'" patriarch. The fake ID did not even have Simpson's correct address. The ID's address said 28 Springfield Way, but fans of "The Simpsons" would know that the family lives at 742 Evergreen Terrace. Thames Valley Police said that the driver's car was seized and the driver was reported for driving without insurance and driving without a proper license.  798

HUNTINGTON BEACH (CNS) - Two firefighters and two Oktoberfest celebrants remain hospitalized Sunday with injuries resulting from an electrical vault that exploded at the Old World Village's seasonal celebration in Huntington Beach, authorities said. Witnesses at the scene claimed there were actually three explosions. A witness using the Twitter handle kylen1972 posted video on the platform of what he claimed was the second explosion, in which flames can be seen shooting into the air. Restaurant patron Dawn Orlow-Townsend told KCAL9 the lights flickered before the explosions and that she could feel the heat through the walls. She said that after the initial blast, ``you could hear a pin drop.'' She then described a scene of panic as patrons struggled to get out of the building. ``I pray those firefighters are okay,'' she said. ``It was crazy, it was so intense. There was a second explosion and then a third. We just started running, we left our cellphones. We were freaking out. People were running all over. It was crazy.'' She added, ``It's the world we live in right now. After the first explosion, you just don't know what to think. We didn't know what was going on. The first one, the second one -- then there was mass pandemonium. By the third one, we just couldn't get out of there fast enough.'' KCAL9 also talked to Adam Carlson. ``Everyone was just happy and drinking beer and then the first explosion hit and people started backing away, and security tried to calm everyone,'' he said. ``I didn't see anyone get hurt in my immediate response, but while evacuating, we saw -- I personally saw two people that appeared hurt, one had burns. I just tried to comfort who I could.'' At 8:10 p.m., the Huntington Beach Fire Department received news of the explosion at 7561 Center Ave., a dispatcher said. The flames were out at 8:33 p.m., he said. The injured firefighters were already at Old World Village, investigating reports of a possible electrical fire, Huntington Beach Fire Department Battalion Chief Jeff Lopez told reporters at the scene. They were met by the first explosion when they opened an electrical vault, he said. The second explosion happened within minutes. The injured firefighters and civilians were taken to hospitals for treatment of minor injuries, Lopez said, but added that they were taking those injuries ``very seriously.'' Firefighters and police worked to evacuate employees and patrons of Old World Village, he said. Broadcast reports indicate there were more than 100 visitors at the celebration.
