During a town hall event on ABC on Tuesday night, President Donald Trump defended his administration's response to the COVID-19 pandemic and attempted to distance himself from his leaked admission that he "downplayed" the pandemic.During the event, hosted by George Stephanopoulos, Trump was repeatedly asked about the comments he made to journalist Bob Woodward in March that leaked earlier this month in which he said he wanted to "downplay" the pandemics so as "not to cause a panic."When Stephanopolous brought up the comments, Trump explained that he was simply saying he didn't "want to drive the nation into a panic.""I'm a cheerleader for this nation. In many ways, I actually up-played it in terms of action. My action was very strong," Trump said.Trump pointed to travel restrictions he imposed to China on Feb. 2 and on Europe on March 13 as evidence that he "up-played" his response to the virus. Both restrictions still allowed some travel from the regions to enter the U.S.The President also questioned the effectiveness of masks during the event. While Trump said that he wears masks "in hospitals" and in other situations, he added that "a lot of people think the masks are not good."When asked to clarify, Trump identified "waiters" and restaurant servers in particular, adding that a server "the other day" had been fidgeting with a mask while touching his plate."That can't be good," Trump said.In a press briefing on Wednesday, Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said that Trump "agreed with Dr. Fauci" and was pointing out the "unintended consequences" of wearing masks and highlighting proper mask-wearing techniques.The President also explained his skepticism by citing recommendations from the CDC and Dr. Anthony Fauci from March against wearing masks. At the time, health officials did not recommend the use of masks over a fear of nationwide shortage. Since April, the CDC has recommended that all Americans wear masks when in situations where social distancing is difficult, and Fauci has admitted that "mixed messaging" on mask use by the government put the U.S. behind in its response to the virus.Trump also criticized Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden for not instituting a nationwide mask mandate, despite the fact that Biden does not currently hold public office."Like Joe Biden, they said they were going to do a national mandate on masks...he didn't do it. That is still illegal he says.“Our message is just to put the phones away, just turn them off. (KGTV) - A 16-year-old is battling life-threatening injuries after he was struck by a vehicle in the East County.The teenager was hit by the vehicle at about 8 p.m. Monday near the intersection of East Washington Avenue and Waterloo Ave., El Cajon police said.Police arrived to find the teenager unconscious in the road and transported him to a nearby hospital. The identification of the victim is being withheld, police said.Police added that the teen was with three other male teenagers, who had been running south across East Washington Ave. outside of a crosswalk when the collision occurred. The driver of the Toyota Rav4 that struck the victim remained at the scene and has been cooperating with authorities. Police said they don't believe drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash.Witnesses told 10News the intersection can be dangerous for pedestrians in the area. 921

EL CAJON (CNS) - A motorcyclist was killed today in a collision with a truck on an El Cajon freeway onramp.The fatal crash on the entrance from Greenfield Drive to eastbound Interstate 8 occurred shortly before noon, according to the El Cajon Police Department and the California Highway Patrol.The accident forced closures of the connector and one westbound lane on the adjacent street, and prompted the CHP to issue a traffic alert for the area.The affected traffic lanes were open again as of 1:15 p.m., according to Caltrans. 537

(KGTV)- An El Cajon family says the least valuable items stolen during a recent burglary are the ones they most desperate to get back.  Last Friday, Shannon Torres returned to her home along Murray Drive around noon with her 3-year-old son. "Her heart dropped. She was terrified," said husband Omar Torres.Torres says she found the front unlocked and the French doors leading into the family room open."They had kicked it open and splintered it up near the top," he said.Inside the house, the bedroom drawers were open and Shannon's jewelry boxes were gone and along with them, dozens of pieces of jewelry.Among the missing items: a pearl necklace from her aunt that Shannon wore at her wedding, diamond earrings from her husband for their anniversary, and a silver-and-gold bird necklace. The latter was a Mother's Day present. The couple have three sons, ages eight, six and three."It's very sad. Heartbreaking," said Torres.That feeling was made more intense when they realized what else was in the jewelry boxes: a yellow-and-white flash drive on a key ring and a black SanDisk memory stick. On them were the birth videos of their sons, along with videos and stills of each of their first year of life."It was a tremendous time we want to be able to relive and now we can't on those videos.
