You can expect a "drinking checkup" when you visit the doctor. All adults, including pregnant women, should be screened for unhealthy alcohol use by their primary care physicians, the United States Preventive Services Task Force advises. For those patients who drink above the recommended limits, doctors should provide brief counseling to help them reduce their drinking, according to the new task force statement?published Tuesday in the medical journal JAMA.As far as teens, the independent panel of medical experts came up empty. The task force said it did not find enough evidence to make a recommendation for or against alcohol screening and counseling for those under the age of 18. The panel is calling for more research.Unhealthy alcohol use means drinking beyond the recommended limits. No more than four drinks in a single day and 14 drinks in a week is the line drawn for men age 21 to 64, according to National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. For women and older men, the institute advises no more than three drinks in one day and no more than seven drinks in a week. The chairlift where he died is located in Vail's Blue Sky Basin. Reports indicate the seat on chair 37 was left in the upright position and that's why the man fell through when he went to sit down. "They should’ve just hit the stop button, there’s an emergency stop and there’s a slow stop and if they’re doing their job they could hit the slow stop before the guests are loading," said Joseph Bloch, an attorney who has worked on cases involving skier accidents. In one of his cases, a chairlift seat was left up, injuring a woman. The 2002 incident resulted in a trial and he said Vail Resorts failed to properly stop the lift and properly train operators. "The wind blew up the seat, my client and her husband were getting on the chair lift and the lift operator didn’t observe that the seat was flipped... and they got pushed into the rocks," said Bloch.Several chairlift-related accidents have made headlines in recent years. With the 20th anniversary of 9/11 coming up next year, the children of 9/11 first responders are coming together to share their stories for the first time in a new book due out next year."Even though we all experienced the day, we wall experienced it differently," said Susan Fiorentino, daughter of NYPD Retired Detective Pete Fiorentino, who responded to the World Trade Center attacks. "I was 10," said Susan, now 29 years old. It was Fiorentino's idea and she is leading the project to collect stories. "It’s important to raise awareness this is still a community that is suffering and we need to support them."So far, she has gathered 50 stories, including her own. She says the experience of 9/11 has influenced her and so many other 9/11 children to lead a life of service."I had a lot of people who said because my father because my mother was a first responder, that is what made me get into the first responder field," she said. She is still looking to collect more stories about how the children of 9/11 responders saw their childhood and now adulthood impacted by the day, documenting history through the eyes of some who have never told their stories before."Through connecting with others in my own experience in getting help with being a 9/11 first responder child has helped me so I hope it would help others as well," she said. The book will be published next summer. All the proceeds will go to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which honors first responders and members of our armed forces.Anyone interested in submitting their story should e-mail Susan before December 1 at Susan.Fiorentino11@gmail.com.This story was first reported by Christie Duffy at WPIX in New York, New York. 1706
