SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In a graphic display, a former charter boat captain demonstrated Wednesday how to make the knots found on Rebecca Zahau’s body, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.Zahau was discovered bound and hanging from a balcony of the Spreckels Mansion in Coronado in 2011.While the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office determined the death was a suicide, Zahau’s family believes she was murdered.The Zahau family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Adam Shacknai, the brother of Rebecca’s boyfriend and the only other person in the home at the time of her death.Lindsey Philpott used a lifelike mannequin covered with a white sheet to show the overhand and clove hitch knots, which, according to the U-T report, Philpott said were common for nautical uses.Shacknai works as a tugboat captain.Philpott said under cross-examination that both knots are simple and widely used, the Union-Tribune reported.The Zahau wrongful death trial, which was in its fifth day Wednesday, is expected to last four weeks. 1034

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Locally and nationally, the calls are growing louder for some immigrant detainees to be released. In 2018, Kazakhstan native Satbay Kydyrali, 31, made his way to a local border crossing "He crossed border, turned himself in and asked for asylum," said Almas Irgebayev, Kydyrali's brother.Irgebayev says the asylum claim was denied and is now under appeal, a decision that could be years away. Meanwhile his brother continues to being held at Otay Mesa Detention Center. "Last three days, I was just crying when I think about him," said Irgebayev.Irgebayev says his brother is coughing, and in a cell with 7 other men. They are less than two feet apart, and most of the other men are also coughing. His brother told him none of the staff is wearing masks, and the detainees clean their own cell twice a day. The two brothers talk on the phone every day."He says that he wants to get out. I was crying on the phone. I heard him crying as well," said Irgebayev.Irgebayev is fearful because his brother is at-risk. He contracted tuberculosis as a child and has developed chronic breathing issues."I'm in a panic. I am feeling very bad, because I'm helpless," said Irgebayev. Similar sentiments were on display at a socially distant, vehicle protest near the federal courthouse downtown. Immigrant advocates were asking for at-risk detainees to be released. On the same day, members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus called on Homeland Security officials to release low-priority detainees.In a statement, a DHS spokesperson says they're following CDC guidelines for disease monitoring and management protocols.' Irgabayev believes that statement doesn't reflect reality."I'm just afraid he is going to die in there," said Irgebayev.Irgabayev says his brother is in day three of a hunger strike protesting the conditions. The number of detainees on the hunger strike has shrunk from 90 to eight since the first day.An employee at the Otay Mesa Detention Center has tested positive, the first employee so far, according to prison company CivicCore. The online festival will feature dance performances, a cultural storytime, and an arts and crafts workshop:The festival will also include a tour of the Rancho Guajome Adobe, an authentic 1850s adobe hacienda located in Vista that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.The holiday originated thousands of years ago in Mesoamerica (Mexico and northern Central America). Dia de los Muertos is not a somber holiday. Rather than mourning, ancient Aztecs, Mayans, and Toltec celebrated and honored the dead by providing food, water, and tools to aid their journey into the afterlife. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Jessica Reilly, a Navy Air Traffic Controller currently based out of San Diego, has a high-stress job, but turns to her artistic side as an outlet. She combines her passion for the Navy with creating comics, adding a little bit of Dungeons and Dragons (which she learned from her husband) to create Gobbo the Goblin, a Navy sailor.“I have managed to breed a comic series for the Navy that is also targeted toward Dungeons and Dragons players,” she said, laughing.She said she’s loved art since she was a child, and started drawing her first comics on whiteboards while aboard Navy ships. It’s grown from there. She has a cartoon version of herself that goes on adventures with Gobbo. She said her real-life experiences combined with stories from other sailors motivate the storylines, frequently making fun of the daily woes of Navy life.“There is an outlet and a want for people to see comics kind of tongue and cheek of their own culture,” she said.She said this comedic relief is a good mental break from a tense job.“My job, even though it’s stressful, especially as an Air Traffic Controller, I can take a break, and I can remind everybody else that it’s not so stressful,” she said.Her art has turned into a family business. Her husband, who is a Navy veteran and currently in the Army reserves, writes comic books and she illustrates them. She said the first time they teamed up, they brought the comic books to a show and they sold out on the spot. Their company, Five Realms, was supposed to have a table at Comic-Con, which was canceled this year. To win a spot at the show, they had to submit their comic book, which was reviewed by judges. “It’s a huge accomplishment for me and my husband and unfortunately it didn’t happen,” she said, adding that they hope to be there next year.Jessica’s work has been noticed by the Navy. She’s been selected to do an Instagram takeover of the Navy’s “At the Helm” page during the week of October 25. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Members of a newly formed Guardian Angels chapter in Pacific Beach went on patrol for the first time Saturday night.Members of the Sacramento Chapter traveled to San Diego to train the new volunteers. Administrator Sarah Bonesteel joined after a neighborhood crime walk, saying "crime is getting out of control, we've lost our parks, and our library and things like that."RELATED: Guardian Angels look to start street patrols in Pacific BeachThe Guardian Angels are a national crime prevention nonprofit organization that started in New York in 1979. The group said it created chapters in over 130 cities in 13 countries.While the group has several programs to prevent crime, the most visible are its street patrols. The Pacific Beach Chapter hopes to provide a safe environment after the bars close.Guardian Angels patrol in groups of at least two while wearing red berets and uniforms, and say the patrols are meant to serve as a visual deterrent and aim to avoid violent confrontations.Angels on patrols are unarmed but trained in self-defense to protect themselves in case a situation becomes physical. They hope they do not have to use their training.The organization conducts background checks on new members to ensure everyone's safety. 1270
