SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Days after Governor Gavin Newsom signed a new law aimed at child sex abuse, three San Diego women came forward to announce a lawsuit against the Diocese of San Diego. The three women say they were abused by Monsignor Gregory Sheridan as children. Sheridan worked in this diocese for 35 years and is on the diocese’s list of credibly accused abusive priests. This new measure gives survivors of childhood sexual assault, regardless of their age, a three-year “window” to bring a civil lawsuit against any perpetrator and employer or third party that was aware of misconduct that created a risk of childhood sexual assault. The new law also extends the statute of limitations for survivors of childhood sexual assault, giving survivors more time to file civil lawsuits: up to their 40th birthday (previously their 26th birthday) or within five years (previously three years) from the date of discovery of an adult psychological injury caused by the childhood sexual assault. One of the victims told 10News, "It doesn’t mean you don’t love God, doesn’t mean you don’t support your church, it means this priest was a bad apple."10News reached out to the Diocese of San Diego and they sent a statement that reads in part, "There is no crime or sin worse than a priest abusing the young people he is sworn to serve and protect. We pray that victims of sexual abuse receive the help they need to heal." 1422

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the number of vaping-related illnesses continues to rise across the country, local leaders are seeing a spike in marijuana vape users in San Diego. The DEA and local health officials are now laying out their plans to stop the crisis in our county. The number of people who have used marijuana vaping in San Diego has grown, including users who are underage. A study done by SANDAG shows 70 percent of juveniles and 61 percent of adults have reported vaping with THC products. The DEA says the best way to combat the spike is to crack down on illegal extraction labs. "The creation of the vaping cartridge process is not controlled in any way, shape, or form," says Assistant Special Agent in Charge Colin Ruane. "There's no quality control; there's no testing of the product. So when you get the THC, you don't know what you're getting and what you're inhaling."The DEA says the extraction of THC also poses a safety risk to the community. Four extraction labs have caused a fire or explosion in various areas around the county. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed over 1,800 cases of vaping related illnesses in the U.S. Many of those admitted to using THC products. 37 people have died. The DEA is working with its partners and other local organizations to continue to get the word out on the dangers of vaping. 1368

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Before Vice President Mike Pence made his way to Coronado, he spent the morning at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel. The Vice President and Second lady stayed there during their San Diego Visit. A few protestors inflated the now well-known "Baby Trump" outside of the hotel; It's possible the Vice President got a look at the giant balloon. "We're hoping that the Vice President sees this and sees that there is resistance here in San Diego," says protestor Will Johnson. The giant balloon was an attention grabber for many who saw it on Park Boulevard. "I knew he was coming to town, but I didn't know he was staying here," says Kate Permenter. Permenter is in town for a convention and staying at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel, saying, "So last night people kind of started freaking out."Outside of the hotel, security checked every car making its way into the garage. Hotel guests say there are dozens of police officers and secret service agents inside of the hotel. "At every entrance, there are cops just kind of staring at you."Dozens of officers escorted the motorcade as the Vice President left downtown this morning. Protestors said there would be another demonstration outside of the hotel at 7 p.m. but "Baby Trump" will not be in attendance. 1270

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As six candidates took the stage Friday, the eyes on who would be the one to replace former Congressman Duncan Hunter focused mainly on three.Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar and Republicans Carl DeMaio and Darrell Issa. The three are polling among the top for two spots up for grabs in the March primary. The two highest vote-getters on March 3 will get a ticket to the November runoff for the 50th Congressional District seat.RELATED: 50th District candidates square off on stageHunter resigned in January after pleading guilty to one count of campaign fraud. Campa-Najjar is making another run for the seat after he narrowly lost in 2018 to Hunter, who was then under indictment. He opened the debate Friday. RELATED: New poll shows frontrunners to replace Duncan Hunter"For me it's about rewarding the middle class, lowering the cost of housing, making sure that health care is affordable, we will talk about all of that today," Campa-Najjar said. The debate mainly focused on housing. Former City Councilman DeMaio placed a lot of the blame for the state's high costs on Democrats in Sacramento. "We see people leaving because California is not what it once was," DeMaio said.RELATED: Issa secures two high-profile conservative endorsementsWith Democrats entirely behind Campa-Najjar, DeMaio and Issa have been attacking each other for that second spot in the runoff. Issa represented districts in San Diego County in Congress for nearly two decades. He did not run for re-election in 2018, saying he had plans to serve in the Trump administration. "The president nominated me not once, but twice, to serve in his administration but I was blocked by the Senate," Issa said.RELATED: Issa stands by ad ripped by his own partyThe race has garnered national attention mainly due to political attack ads between DeMaio and Issa. A recent Issa ad attacking DeMaio was criticized by his own party for displaying headlines that described DeMaio as gay. Still, Issa largely did not engage with DeMaio on the debate stage. Instead, it was Campa-Najjar who needled both. In his exchange, he took aim at DeMaio for always attacking state politicians.RELATED: San Diego Republican Party won't endorse a 50th District candidate"If you want to work on it run for governor man, half this room does not understand why you're running for Congress? All your proposals are about California," Campa-Najjar told DeMaio on stage. "And join Brian Jones in the Senate and help us reduce our taxes in California."Jones is also running for the 50th District seat."And the other half of the room knows exactly what I'm talking about," DeMaio responded to Campa-Najjar.RELATED: Who could take of the 50th District after Hunter's guilty pleaDeMaio says he can reform the state while serving in Congress."You can do both. It's called leadership," DeMaio added.Meanwhile, Issa says he would use his experience in Congress to be influential as soon as he's elected. "I believe with my 18 years of experience and seniority, I go right to the top of key committees," Issa said.Topics for debate included job growth, housing discrimination politics, and eliminating the cap on state and local tax deductions. 3199

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California’s new gig economy law was meant to help rideshare drivers and other freelance workers get better benefits, but some critics say it’s threatening the spirit of Christmas itself. Those critics are mall Santas, who have traditionally been hired as independent contractors through third-party bookers or employment agencies.Under Assembly Bill 5, authored by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego), those workers must be reclassified as employees with insurance and other benefits.“Lorena Gonzalez, she might kill all the Santas. She might kill the Easter Bunnies,” said Steve Schafer, the president of the San Diego chapter of the Fraternal Order of Real Bearded Santas. Some Santas warn that bookers may go to great lengths to avoid paying employee benefits. “I don't know how someone can justify this,” said Jerry Tamburino, a Santa who has worked for more than a decade at a large commercial store.Tamburino said his agent notified him Tuesday that she would replace him and other Santas at a chain of California retail stores with out-of-state St. Nicks.“That's what [the booker is] being forced to do to address -- or evade -- or stay in business with this stupid law,” he said.Bringing in out-of-state workers to skirt AB-5 would violate California law, since labor laws apply to anyone performing work in the state, said Gonzalez’ office. But Tamburino said it would be hard for regulators to enforce.Malls and stores could hire Santas directly as independent contractors, Gonzalez’ office noted, since that kind of relationship passes AB-5’s three-pronged test.To do so, Tamburino said he would have to form his own LLC and said he doesn’t have the experience to run his own business.Tamburino said he would begin reaching out to other Santa-booking agencies in hopes they will hire him as an employee, but there’s a lot at stake: he receives about half of his annual income from Santa jobs. 1938
