The American Red Cross is now checking all blood donations for coronavirus antibodies, instead of just searching for recovered patients. The organization is calling it a “game changer.”“We can then not only inform that donor of the testing results that we've identified COVID-19 antibodies in their blood, but also use that product as convalescent plasma to help patients who are ill with COVID-19 in the hospital,” said Dr. Pampee Young, Chief Medical Officer at the American Red Cross.Early results from the National Institutes for Health show the plasma can make a big difference for severely sick COVID-19 patients. And data from these new tests will help those researchers working to better understand the virus.The Red Cross says the need for whole blood donors is constant, but plasma is more unpredictable.Over the summer, plasma supplies ran low after unprecedented infections and demand in some states.Now, they're asking more donors to step up to restock for another potential surge in the fall and winter.“Because we can’t predict the demand, we want to ensure that we have enough inventory, because what really saves lives are the units that are on the shelf, not something that we need to collect once we realize there’s a need,” said Young.The Red Cross has taken additional safety steps during the pandemic. (KGTV) -- Authorities announced that a missing Los Angeles mother and her three children were safely located at the San Ysidro Port of Entry in south San Diego County.The young family disappeared from their home in Sylmar on Oct. 9, according to authorities.Liliana Lopez's three children, who were also missing since Oct. 9, were found when they entered the U.S. from Mexico at the border crossing.Los Angeles police detectives were interviewing Lopez to determine the circumstances of her and her children's disappearance.A man who was identified as a possible suspect in their kidnapping, Esteban Lopez, is believed to be still in Mexico, according to authorities.Police were called to the 13600 block of Fellows Avenue at 9:27 p.m. on Oct. 9 and found that a possible kidnapping had occurred. Police continued to search for them even as the Saddleridge Fire started up the next day and raged throughout the area.Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact LAPD Det. The American Heart Association highlighted findings on Friday indicating the coronavirus may cause more heart damage than previously believed.The AHA says that inflammation of the vascular system and injury to the heart occurs in 20 to 30 percent of all hospitalized coronavirus patients. The heart damage results in the 40% of all coronavirus-related deaths, the American Heart Association said.Studies have suggested that 8 to 12 percent of all coronavirus infections have caused heart damage. There is also concern that the resulting heart damage causes a greater risk for heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular-related illnesses even following recovery.“Much remains to be learned about COVID-19 infection and the heart. Although we think of the lungs being the primary target, there are frequent biomarker elevations noted in infected patients that are usually associated with acute heart injury. Moreover, several devastating complications of COVID-19 are cardiac in nature and may result in lingering cardiac dysfunction beyond the course of the viral illness itself,” said Mitchell S. V. The Arab-American community is on high alert because of a hateful flier that is circulating.The flier promotes April 3 as "Punish a Muslim Day" and encourages violence against Muslims with an escalating point system the more outrageous the act.The fliers originated in London. They were left on the steps of several mosques there.The message is now being spread to the U.S. by way of social media and raising concerns.“We're encouraging the community to be vigilant and to have open lines of communication with local law enforcement.
