SAN DEIGO (KGTV) -- As the migrant caravan makes its way through Mexico, local attorneys and shelters in Tijuana are monitoring their progress, in case the immigrants arrive at the Tijuana and San Diego border. The group Federal Defenders of San Diego worked illegal entry cases during the last caravan in April. Kara Hartzler is one of their attorneys, she says theirs already a daily backlog with immigration cases and this caravan will further overwhelm the system.Hartzler says many immigrants from April's caravan are still in the asylum process.  It's estimated the new caravan is 4,000 to 7,000 immigrants in size, roughly three times bigger than the one in April. In Tijuana, shelters are having meetings to prepare for the possibility of a large arrival. In a series of tweets Monday morning, President Trump called the latest caravan a "national emergency" and threatened to cut off aid to certain Central American countries, adding that he's already alerted Border Patrol and the military.  1038

SAN DIEGO (AP) — U.S. border authorities stopped people entering the country illegally from Mexico more than 69,000 times in October, the sixth straight monthly increase and the highest level since July 2019. Mark Morgan, acting Customs and Border Protection commissioner, said deteriorating economic conditions were driving more people to come to the United States. The percentage of people caught who had tried crossing the border at least once in the previous year was 37% for those expelled from March through September. The numbers offer a likely scenario of what President-elect Joe Biden will inherit upon taking office in January. 646

Sales are surging at Stoddard’s Range and Guns. Long lines pack the Atlanta shooting range with people buying guns and ammunition.Co-owner Ken Baye says sales have soared since mid-March, when the pandemic hit. Now, he’s seeing a second wave of interest with more people now looking to learn how to use a firearm. That includes people like Michelle DeShields, an elementary school counselor. She's aiming to increase her personal safety during these uncertain times.“It’s just been scary with police brutality that we are looking at, even the protesting sometimes, you see it’s gotten a little out of hand,” she said. The National Shooting Sports Foundation reports background checks for firearms purchases saw record highs in April and May.And that millions of those people are new gun owners.DeShields' father was a military veteran and a police officer. So, she grew up with guns but never learned to use one until now.“I do feel like guns used safely for protection and they are a good thing,” she said.Though, her gun is something she hopes to never have to use outside of a shooting range. 1100
