(AP) — Eight acrobats injured when the rigging suspending them by the hair plummeted to the floor during a circus performance in Rhode Island in 2014 have reached a .5 million settlement with ownership and management of the arena where the circus was held.Zachary Mandell, an attorney for the women, confirmed the settlement, first reported by The Providence Journal.A metal clip that held the acrobats 20 feet above the floor of the Dunkin' Donuts Center snapped.The women sued the Rhode Island Convention Center Authority, which owns the arena, and SMG, which manages it.According to the Associated Press, SMG arranged with Feld Entertainment to bring the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus to Providence.The Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) found that the clip was overloaded after the accident, so they cited Feld and imposed a fine, the AP reported.An attorney for both entities said he could neither confirm nor deny a settlement.Mandell added that insurers would pay the settlement. 1070

Residents and businesses near a dam in North Carolina appeared to have dodged potential disaster Wednesday after an emergency at the location was called off.Earlier, heavy rains and a landslide in the western North Carolina mountains "compromised the integrity" of Lake Tahoma dam and triggered urgent calls for mandatory evacuations.Emergency officials said the dam was "at risk of imminent failure" and the weather service extended a flash flood warning for central McDowell County until 12:30 p.m.The National Weather Service cited reports early Wednesday from McDowell County emergency management officials that "water is spilling around the sides of Lake Tahoma dam. Evacuations ongoing south of the dam."But later, McDowell County emergency officials said Lake Tahoma had been inspected and deemed safe and a mandatory evacuation was halted. "The emergency at Lake Tahoma has been canceled. The evacuation order is no longer in effect. President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, had his White House security clearance restored Wednesday, a person familiar with the matter said, after months of uncertainty stemming in part from his role in the ongoing investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller.Kushner was stripped of his interim clearance in February amid an overhaul of procedures governing access to the nation's most sensitive secrets following the resignation of Rob Porter, the President's staff secretary, who had been allowed to remain in his post for months despite allegations of spouse abuse.The Mueller probe has also hung over Kushner's status in the White House, in part because some of the matters under investigation relate to his role during the campaign and the transition, including contacts with Russians, as well as events that occurred in the early months of the Trump presidency, such as the firing of former FBI Director James Comey.In April, Kushner met with Mueller's investigators for a second time and answered questions for seven hours, according to his attorney, Abbe Lowell. He had previously sat for an interview last November that was largely focused on former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who soon after pleaded guilty to charges of making false statements to the FBI.White House officials have blamed the delay in Kushner receiving his security clearance on administrative backlogs normal to a new administration, as well as the complicated nature of his application. But Kushner's troubles were compounded at least in part because his initial security clearance application didn't list dozens of foreign contacts that he later included in updated submissions to the FBI.Kushner's initial SF-86 form did not mention any foreign contacts, though he quickly supplemented it to indicate that he would provide that information.
