(KGTV) - The family of an 11-year-old boy who was killed in the Easter bombings in Sri Lanka held a celebration of life ceremony in Lakeside Wednesday night.They gathered on a trail in Oak Oasis County Park to remember Kieran Shafritz de Zoysa, on what would have been his 12th birthday.About a mile down the trail, they unveiled a new bench with a plaque in his memory, telling future hikers to “Be like Kieran.”“Kieran’s mindset was always about helping others,” said Alex Arrow, his father who lives in Lakeside.“He was the greatest ray of light that my life has ever seen,” said Dhulsini de Zoysa, Kieran’s mother.Both parents described him as curious, intelligent and empathetic.“He was just a sponge. He took in everything regardless of the topic,” said his mother.Arrow said his son had dreams of becoming a neuroscientist, with the goal of finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease. “I also grieve for what the world lost,” said Arrow. “That piece of shrapnel from the suicide bomber struck down a future champion against the unknowns of the brain.”In total, 259 people were killed in a series of coordinated bombings on April 21 in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo. 1202

LAKE JACKSON, Texas — A Houston-area official says it will take 60 days to ensure a city drinking water system is purged of a deadly, microscopic parasite that led to the death of a 6-year-old boy earlier this month.The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality said earlier this week that it was developing a plan to flush and disinfect the water system.Mundo says Lake Jackson residents are urged to boil their tap water before using it.Texas Gov. Greg Abbott declared a state of disaster in Brazoria County over the weekend due to the presence of the microbe in the drinking water.Lake Jackson City Manager Modesto Mundo said Monday that three of 11 samples of the city's water indicated preliminary positive results for the naegleria fowleri microbe.One sample came from the home of Josiah McIntyre, a 6-year-old boy whom doctors said died earlier this month after being infected with the parasite.According to the Houston Chronicle, Josiah was tested for strep and COVID-19 when he came down with a fever. It wasn't until the disease had significantly progressed that doctors realized that N. fowleri was the culprit."He was an active little boy," Josiah's mother, Maria Castillo, told KTRK-TV in Houston. (KGTV) - An Uber driver says she was physically assaulted by a passenger Sunday night in La Mesa after a dispute over a mask."This is definitely the most insane experience driving with Uber that I've ever had," said Tia.Just past 6 p.m. Sunday, Tia, who first started driving for Uber last summer, arrived for a pickup outside the Echo Pointe apartments.Tia says a man and the passenger's sister ushered the passenger into the car with a warning for Tia: the passenger was drunk."She didn't have a mask on ... so I asked her if she could please put on a spare mask, which I had in the back seat. Took her awhile to put it on, but she did," said Tia.As the ride got started, Tia says her passenger wouldn't let it go."She said in a very snarky tone, 'Are you more comfortable now that I have a mask on?' She was very drunk, very belligerent, yelling," said Tia.Tia say she decided to end the ride."I was fed up with the disrespect," said Tia.Tia says she returned to the pickup spot and asked her to get out repeatedly, but the woman refused. Tia recorded some of it on her phone. Tia, who eventually called 911, says when she got out of the car and reached in to remove the woman's belongings, the passenger grabbed her neck from behind.According to Tia, the passenger became violent, chasing her around the car for several minutes, at one point hitting in the right eye. Tia says the passenger's sister and the man came out and subdued the woman, allowing Tia to drive away, and meet police and file a report."I was dumbfounded. I couldn’t believe I was assaulted for essentially wearing a mask ... People need to treat each other with respect. Wear a mask ... We're just trying to keep everybody safe," said Tia.Tia says she's still feeling pain in her eye but she's feeling better. LAS VEGAS — Four contestants of the Mrs. America Pageant 2018 have accused the pageant's executive director of racial bias during conversations he had with them at the event in August.The contestants made the claims while speaking to media with their attorney, Gloria Alred, in New York today.The pageant took place in August 2018 in Las Vegas.Alred said some black participants allege that they were subjected to racially insensitive comments. They were made by the executive director and co-founder of the pageant, David Marmel. He "subjected them to listening to racial stereotypes about African-American Women and African-American men," Alred said.A white participant overheard the conversation, she said. The people who heard the comments shared that information with their families after it occurred.The contestants have come out with the information now to ensure pageant participants in the future will not endure the alleged racial bias. The women do not plan to file a claim or lawsuit, they simply want the pageant to be a place where everyone is respected and feels safe, Alred said.Marmel, who is white, has been accused of using the "n" word when referencing blacks, and telling the contestants that black women should stop having babies with multiple men, and called them "baby daddies."He also told the contestants they should be thankful for what he has done for the black community and saying the most racist people he's ever known are the leaders of "Ebony" and "Jet" magazines, according to the women who spoke at today's news conference.The contestants said they stayed quiet at the time for fear of being removed from the pageant.
