SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One of four teenagers accused of fatally beating a man near Petco Park was charged Tuesday with murder and torture.San Diego Police said Dominick Wells, 19, and three juvenile females aged 14, 15 and 17 attacked Edward Starland near a bridge behind the ballpark the afternoon of Nov. 18.Witnesses said Starland had been fighting with the group before he was thrown to the ground and beaten. The group ran off down Imperial Avenue. Starland’s sister Catherine flew to San Diego from Florida to be by his side when he was on life support in the hospital. She said her brother had a heart condition and a pacemaker, and didn’t know why anyone would attack him."I came here for my brother because I don't want him to be alone. I want him to know I'm by his side; when he wakes up he knows I'm here,” she said. Starland, 56, died of his injuries Dec. 3.Police later arrested the teens. Wells is currently being held on a first-degree murder charge at San Diego Central Jail. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a suspect after two people were stabbed in the San Diego River Tuesday night. According to police, the stabbing happened on the 500 block of Morena Boulevard around 6:30 p.m. between Old Town and Linda Vista.After the stabbing, the suspect, only described as a man wearing a white shirt, fled the scene. Despite a police helicopter and officers on foot, the suspect managed to escape.Lt. Mike Ramsay said the two victims were hispanic men, ages 18 and 19. One was stabbed in the chest and the other in the stomach. They were taken to UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest. Ramsay described their condition as "serious but stable."Police closed off Morena Boulevard near Interstate 8 as they searched for the suspect, creating heavy traffic in the area. 10News will continue to keep you updated as soon as we receive more information. 882

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More people have tested positive at the San Diego Convention Center, which has been serving as a shelter for San Diego's homeless since April.Regular testing has been conducted at the Convention Center since the shelter opened, but there was a rise in positive cases starting with tests administered on Dec. 3. Since then, there have been 120 positive cases detected. According to city officials, 115 are clients and five are staff members.Prior to Dec. 3, the city says there had been 27 positive cases since April.Dr. Eric McDonald, medical director of the County Health and Human Services Agency's Epidemiology and Immunization Branch, released the following statement: 699

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police were involved in a chase that led to a standoff in Valencia Park Wednesday night.Video from Sky10 showed police chasing the suspect through residential streets. The chase began after police spotted the woman, who is wanted for burglaries and identity thefts throughout San Diego County, driving on the 805.The woman refused to stop and led both Harbor Police and San Diego Police on a slow-speed chase. Police then used spike strips that appeared to flatten one of the vehicle’s tires.The driver stopped a short distance after the spikes were used. Police could then be seen taking a police K9 out of one of the vehicles.The woman refused to get out of her car after police threatened to send in the K9 unit. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Peeps are traditionally a sign of Spring: brightly colored marshmallow candy that’s front and center on store shelves.Long after Easter, Peeps, made by the Just Born company, appear to stay fresh as ever, seemingly indestructible in their pastel packages.In 2002, 10News put the durability of the everlasting marshmallows to the test. Reporter Herb Cawthorne, photographer Richard Klein and producer Revelle Anderson put Peeps on camera.The inspiration was simple, according to Klein. “We were sitting around talking about the purpose behind the Peep,” Klein said.That led to an elaborate shoot at San Diego locations. The candy was shot, run over, thrown off a five-story tower, and stomped with a crane."During the entire shoot I chewed on a Peep. It never got smaller. I wondered how we ate them as kids,” Cawthorne told 10News in 2018.The 2002 video shows only children eating the Peeps.Adults may want to take notice. Peeps are gluten-free and fat-free.Since their inception Peeps have crossed over into other holidays as well, now available in a variety of shapes for Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's Day, and the summer season.Peeps were first created in 1953 by laboriously hand-squeezing marshmallow through pastry tubes, according to Just Born. The process was eventually simplified and brought the production time of the treat from 27 hours down to 6 minutes.As far as the company is concerned, they hope their product retains its freshness year-round.
