SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Military families say the squalid living conditions detailed in a new report by the Military Family Advisory Network released Wednesday don't fully portray their struggle. In Murphy Canyon, the issues range from mice, to dry rot to rust. Shelby Stevens' husband is in the Navy, and they've been stationed in San Diego for three years. On the porch she pointed out what looked like half painted pergolas and said they were full of dry rot. Inside there is no microwave, and the kitchen was much the same as it was originally in the 1990's. "We've got ant problems, roaches, mice," Stevens showed 10News her shed in the back yard. Inside there's half a dozen mice traps, with little black dots covering the floor. Stevens says those are mice droppings. On her phone, an image of a dead mouse, she said her dog killed. These issues echoed throughout the military community.A woman who didn't wish to be identified, for fear of retaliation, said her closet door had loose rusted screws she had to keep out of her toddlers' reach. She said the repair work on a clogged toilet was shoddy, saying the men left mold, and poop around the base of the toilet. The new report by the Military Family Advisory Network breaks down the problems renters face by base. For San Diego military families, the top two issues are maintenance and mold."We absolutely know that the nearly 17,000 who responded to our questionnaire, this is their reality," Shannon Razsadin, Executive Director of MFAN, said. The survey went out last January and ran for a week. Razsadin hopes the report gives military families a tool to create change. The military moms who spoke with 10News say it's not a complete picture of what they're dealing with. Stevens said 17,000 people across the country is a very small part of the military community as a whole. She said in the last several months their service has declined."We've had no shows from maintenance men, we've had no shows from contractors who are scheduled to come out to my house, no show, no call. The office hasn't been in contact with any of us," she says. Her sense of despair growing, "these are the kinds of conditions we're living in," she said tearing up.The women said they pay more than ,000 a month and say the high cost of living is what keeps them in the military housing.10News reached out to Lincoln MIlitary Housing and recieved a comment Thursday morning: 2416

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Lifeguards say two people were rescued from a trail in the Blacks Beach area on Sunday in separate incidents. The first involved a woman who injured her ankle, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue. The woman was about half-way down before being injured. Lifeguards put her on a stretcher and used ropes to lower her down to the beach. She was taken by lifeguards to meet paramedics. The second occurred on the same trail, involving a woman suffering from heat exhaustion. She was unable to make it down the rest of the trail, requiring lifeguards to hoist her to the beach below to get her to paramedics.Lifeguards said with Labor Day weekend approaching and a heatwave expected next weekend, they are reminding visitors to local trails to know their limits, wear proper footwear for uneven beach terrain, and make sure they have plenty of water.Beach lifeguards say they don't expect to see crowds slow down anytime soon. 945

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's no secret: exploring San Diego is a bit different amid county health orders and the COVID-19 pandemic. But there are still ways to explore safely! We're continuing our weekly look at fun around town with safety in mind. Here are four options for this weekend:Visit Old Town San Diego: While many of Old Town's smaller museums and shops remain closed, areas like the state park, Bazaar del Mundo, and nearby eateries are open for visitors. Businesses that have reopened are abiding by distancing, so guests can feel safe shopping in stores. The state park is also a great area to get some fresh air and distance. More infoCounty fair fun: The San Diego County Fair may be canceled this year, but the Del Mar Fairgrounds is continuing to highlight fair exhibits, foods, and more online and at the fairgrounds. Fair food vendors welcome guests Friday - Sunday throughout June for kettle corn, hot dogs, and more treats and the fair is hosting virtual exhibits showcasing student artwork, photography, and livestock shows. More infoHit the beach: San Diego County's beaches are open for laying out and relaxing, and parking lots, boardwalks, and piers have reopened. With warm temperatures lingering this week, it's the perfect time for a beach day. Just remember to wear a facial covering and practice distancing when near non-household members. More infoCheck out the San Diego Air and Space Museum: Balboa Park's first museum to reopen will be on Friday, as the San Diego Air and Space Museum welcomes guests with increased safety measures like stylus pens for hands-on exhibits, sanitation procedures, and distancing between guests. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's become the first question when considering a cell phone plan: How's the coverage? In San Diego, AT&T customers may find they have better luck than other carriers, according to a study by PC Mag.Locally, 19 locations were tested around the county — from Chula Vista to La Jolla and out to the College East area — between May 7 and June 1, 2019. Testers ran speed software every two minutes on sets of Samsung Galaxy S10 series phones for about 15 minutes in each location. For San Diego County, AT&T scored the "fastest" title ahead of T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint."In San Diego, AT&T had nearly double the average download speed of the next-fastest network, with excellent reliability," PC Mag writes. "The carrier has been spreading its 5G Evolution LTE improvements up and down the California coastline, and we really saw the positive benefits this year."AT&T's average download speed was recorded at 90.7 Mbps, compared to Sprint's 51.5 Mbps, T-Mobile's 44.2 Mbps, and Verizon's 36.4 Mbps averages. Uploads over 2 Mbps were successful 97% of the time on AT&T's network, 96% on Verizon, 94% on T-Mobile, and 74% on Sprint.Overall, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon were all given a 100% reliability score. But when it came to speed of network, AT&T grabbed a perfect score, followed by T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint."AT&T and Verizon both plan to bring 5G to San Diego this year. As they're millimeter wave networks, you should expect to see them in dense parts of downtown and the Gaslamp District; you'll be relying on 4G in most of the sprawling San Diego metro area for years to come," PC Mag writes.PC Mag's full study and methodology can be found here. 1717
