BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- China Tuesday pledged to continue to promote the development of military relations with Singapore.Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie made the remarks when meeting with Chiang Chie Foo, visiting Permanent Secretary of the Singaporean Defense Ministry.Recent years had witnessed a rapid development of China-Singapore relations, with political mutual trust, a reciprocal and mutually beneficial economic relationship and fruitful cooperation, Liang said.Bilateral military ties had undergone a healthy development, with sound exchanges and cooperation mechanisms, frequent high-level visits and good cooperation in personnel training, joint military training and escort missions, Liang said.China was willing to work with Singapore to continuously boost relations between the two countries and armed forces, so as to play an active role in jointly safeguarding regional security and stability, he said.Chiang said Singapore attached great importance to the development of its relations with China.The two armed forces were expected to maintain exchanges and cooperation and to strengthen understanding and mutual trust, he said.Ma Xiaotian, deputy chief of general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, and Chiang co-chaired the third China-Singapore defense policy dialogue before the meeting.Both sides exchanged views in-depth on regional security, relations of the two countries and armed forces as well as other issues of common concern and reached consensus on further strengthening military ties.They agreed to continue to enhance China-Singapore military cooperation and promote the development of friendly and cooperative military relations.The two nations held the first defense policy dialogue in January 2008 in China and the second in March 2009 in Singapore.

BEIJING, July 17 (Xinhua) - China' s State Council issued a notice Saturday ordering governments at all levels, along with relevant ministries, to upgrade prevention against geological disasters to safeguard the safety of the public.The notice reads, in this period with frequent flooding and geo-disasters, governments and relevant ministries should give priority to disaster prevention, strengthen disaster-prone sites and facilities, and set up close surveillance within these areas.Further, according to the notice, once geological disasters strike, governments should relocate local residents and keep people away from hazardous areas. The national land resource authority is required to create an emergency plan and to prepare disaster-relief personnel and materials.The notice also suggests mass media spread information about prevention and relief instructions.The notice notes this year witnessed frequently extreme weather, such as the rainstorms and floods in the south and geological disasters that caused heavy death tolls and massive injuries.

LUOYANG, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has stressed economic restructuring, agricultural production and the role of grass-root party organizations during his visit to the city of Luoyang in central Henan province.Hu visited state-owned enterprises, research institutes and talked with local farmers during this trip from Friday through Sunday.At Citic Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., the largest manufacturer of mining machinery in China, Hu learned that the company had shifted focus from manufacturing to research and development. He said innovation is the lifeblood of a company.He also visited a tractor manufacturing plant and a bearing producing company, both enjoying rapid growth thanks to restructuring. BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhuanet) --Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co is expected to complete it takeover of Swedish luxury car brand Volvo from US automaker Ford Motor Co on Monday after getting government approval for the deal.Ministry of Commerce officials told China Daily on Thursday that the government cleared the Volvo deal on Monday 26, after the National Development and Reform Commission cleared the proposal last week.Geely has also got the necessary anti-trust approvals from the European Union and the US government for the deal.Li Shufu (center), chairman of Zhejiang Geely Holding Co, arrives for a news conference in Beijing earlier this year. YUSHU, Qinghai, July 10 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government on Saturday started a massive multi-million-dollar project to restore 87 monasteries damaged in a 7.1-magnitude earthquake that shook a predominantly Tibetan area in northwest China in April.Monks and officials gathered at the new site of Trangu Monastery in Yushu, Qinghai Province, for a brief ground-breaking ceremony. Monks from the 700-year-old monastery, whose former buildings collapsed in the quake, held a prayer service, chanting sutras and turning prayer wheels to mark the start of the rebuilding.More than 2,200 people were killed after the 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Yushu. The entire town of Gyegu, the seat of Yushu prefectural government, was flattened, leaving more than 100,000 residents homeless.Lodroe Nyima Rinpoche, a living Buhhda of the Trangu Monastery, said monks felt "grateful" for the government efforts to rebuild damaged monasteries.Three best known monasteries damaged in the Yushu quake were Trangu, Gyegu and Renyak.The repair of Gyegu Monastery also started on Saturday.Qinghai's Ethnic Affairs Committee said the central government had earmarked 1 billion yuan for the monastery restoration in Yushu. The construction will cover an area of 170,000 square meters.Yushu is predominantly populated by ethnic Tibetans and most of them are Buddhists. There were thousands of monasteries, including 194 large or medium ones, in the region before the quake. The number of monks, nuns and other religious personnel was estimated at 23,000, local government data show.The economic losses of the monasteries and in-house religious relics mounted to 756 million yuan, according to the data.Monasteries and religious activities form an important part of local residents' daily life. Phuriwa, deputy head of Qinghai's Ethnic Affairs Committee, said the drafts for monastery restoration were revised many times only to best protect the Tibetan culture and to give local Buddhism believers best places to observe religious rituals.Saturday also marked the start of about 200 rebuilding projects in Yushu, which would cost 16 billion yuan.China plans to spend 31.7 billion yuan in three years to rebuild Yushu. Funding for the reconstruction will come mainly from the central budget, with contributions from provincial finances and donations, the government said earlier.
