SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Hospitalizations related to COVID-19 continue to increase across San Diego County.The county’s latest numbers show 458 patients hospitalized, while 178 are in the Intensive Care Unit.“It is not quite what we’re seeing in Florida and Houston, but we are seeing an increase for sure,” said Dr. Julie Phillips, the medical director of Sharp Grossmont’s Emergency Department.“Almost every ER in the county has their tents set up, and they never took them down despite us not needing to utilize it for a number of weeks, if not even about six weeks, then starting last week it is back in use,” said Phillips.Currently, Sharp Grossmont has 27 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, while Sharp Chula Vista has 44, and Sharp Memorial has 29.Phillips said most local hospitals are well equipped to handle the surge.“All of us have staffed up beds by 150 percent awaiting for this,” she explained. “We know a lot more; we feel better about knowing how it’s transmitted, we feel better about our PPE, especially our N95 masks. Flattening the curve gave us time to get what we needed ready to go, so now we’re ready.”On Friday, Scripps Health reached a single-day all-time high number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients.At its five locations, a total of 126 people were hospitalized. Earlier that week, the number was still in the 90s.Both Scripps Mercy in San Diego and Chula Vista had 38 patients hospitalized at each facility.The numbers were the highest for a single day since the pandemic began.Infectious disease specialist for UCSD Health, Dr. David Pride, tells 10News UCSD’s hospital system is also seeing an increase.“Going back to early June, we admit between 1 and 6 new patients per day. The rolling average is a bit higher the last couple of weeks,” said Pride via email. “We are operating near our capacity, but largely because we accept outside hospital transfers readily who need a higher level of care than their hospitals can provide. We still maintain surge capabilities, so we could admit many more patients should the situation get more dire.”A spokesperson for Palomar Health said they had seen an increase in patients in the last couple of weeks, but still have plenty of capacity.Kaiser Permanente has also seen a recent rise in COVID-19 related hospitalizations.The following statement was sent to 10News.“Consistent with other San Diego County hospitals, Kaiser Permanente has seen a recent rise in COVID-19-related hospitalizations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) In light of the death of George Floyd in Minnesota, the Racial Justice Coalition of San Diego is calling for a ban on all neck restraints used by law enforcement officers."They are inhumane, they are improper," said Yusef Miller with the coalition.Miller has called on San Diegans to write to local leaders demanding a ban on any neck restraints still used by officers.It's called the I can't breathe campaign."Whether kneeling on a neck, which is unconscionable or putting them in a carotid restraint, we're saying to ban all those restraints," he explained.Under the San Diego Police Department's use of force policy, carotid restraints are approved.Officers are not allowed to use their knees.A chokehold cuts off a person's air supply and can be deadly, which is banned by SDPD.The carotid restraint instead cuts off the blood supply, which can knock a person unconscious but is considered less dangerous overall."The carotid restraint becomes the chokehold in the field, and people are killed in this manner," said Miller. "We want all neck restraints banned, not only in San Diego, not only statewide, but throughout the nation."The renewed call to action comes after a video posted to social media showed an officer in Minnesota kneeling on George's Floyd's neck, an unarmed black man."He never even flinched, he never stopped for a second, he didn't take any pressure off for even one second," said Walter Cameron with the group Showing Up for Racial Justice. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a heat advisory through Thursday for the coastal areas and Friday for the inland valleys in San Diego County.The hot weather and dry fuels create dangerous fire weather conditions, keeping fire crews across the county on high alert.“At nine, it already felt significantly warmer than the last couple of days,” said Elizabeth Conniff as she ended her hike at Iron Mountain Trailhead. “It was pretty hot, hotter than I expected, and very dry.”Poway reached nearly 100 degrees before noon Tuesday, nearing record-breaking temperatures for this time of year.Conniff, an experienced hiker, said that she would not recommend hiking during this time.Hotter temperatures are forecasted for Wednesday and Thursday.“If it’s going to be 100 or over, stay home, and that is from somebody who hikes three or four days a week,” she said.The NWS warns the hot weather could cause heat-related illnesses and recommends that people stay hydrated and out of the sun.Firefighting agencies ask everyone to remain vigilant and be extra cautious about doing anything that could spark a wildfire. 1141

San Diego, Calif. (KGTV) - Some military legal experts are raising concerns about President Donald Trump's involvement in the war crimes trial of Navy Seal Eddie Gallagher. This comes after the President ordered that medals and honors for prosecutors in the case be revoked."I think it's troubling," said University of San Diego Law Professor Robert Muth in an interview with 10News. "As the Commander in Chief, it would be his prerogative to weigh in if he felt there was something wrong. However, that would be done in a very different way. You would expect it to be done discreetly."Gallagher was accused of several war crimes during a tour of duty in Iraq. The central charge was that he murdered a prisoner of war, a wounded teenage ISIS fighter. Gallagher was acquitted of that charge. The case drew national attention, including from President Trump, who suggested that Gallagher was a hero who was being treated unfairly. Several people criticized how the JAG prosecutors handled the case."President Trump saw that they were abusing their power," said John Dadian, a San Diego political strategist who also served in the Marine Corps. "Not only manacling him during the trial, but confining him to quarters, he had a hard time taling to his lawyers. That's not fair." Dadian says many military veterans believe the President did the right thing by stepping in.Muth is worried about the President's actions setting a precedent. "The fact that the President went and used the bully pulpit, specifically his Twitter account, to essentially punch down at relatively junior folks who by law can't punch back, they just have to take it, is particularly problematic."
