SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The eight-legged population is overrunning parts of Balboa Park a bit earlier than usual this year.Spider season is in full bloom in San Diego. From Rancho Penasquitos to downtown, people say they are finding webs just about everywhere including hiking trailsOne person wrote on a local Reddit thread they stopped hiking because there were so many webs.Chris Conlan works with San Diego County Vector Control and says there's nothing on usual with what folks are seeing.“They hatch out in the spring and they’re small and make very small webs,” said Conlan. "But as they begin to grow over the course of the summer and beginning of fall where we are right now, they’re much larger they tend to spin bigger webs and those are they kind of webs people walk into freak out and do the spider dance."Conlan says the webs people are bumping into on trails are likely orb weavers’. They are poisonous, but their venom is not toxic to humans like other spiders.“It’s really just the black and the brown widow that people need to worry about and they tend to spin more out of the way webs in corners and dark places," said Conlan. "They’re not the type of web you’re just going to go walking through."Conlan’s advice for folks’ encountering spider’s homes is as good anyone’s.“Carry a stick in front of you,” said Conlan with a laugh. "And be prepared to wipe web off your face from time to time.” 1420

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students distracted and bitten in class at Madison Senior High in Clairemont are hoping for some help to make the mosquitoes go away.The west side of campus, against Doliva Dr., is where people told 10News they were bitten. The same area houses special needs classes. 10News was sent two pictures, one of a student, with special needs, whose calf was bitten by a mosquito, and another of a dead mosquito. It appears to be black with white spots or stripes."It was really bad and it was burning and everything," Junior Arryonna said. She was bitten in art class Thursday."I feel like my ankle starts itching so I'm like what's on my ankle, so I look and I got two bumps on the side of my ankle," she said reaching down to scratch. She said she's allergic, making the bites that much worse.The school district says the first report of a mosquito bite came mid-September, around the first time Aryonna said she was bit. Pest Control came out twice and deployed an organic compound in the drain to kill mosquito larvae. The County was scheduled to come out next week, but after 10News called, they showed up Friday afternoon, according to the district. 1176

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The man accused of opening fire into a Hillcrest business has been found incompetent to stand trial. Stefano Markell Parker, 29, was facing attempted murder charges in San Diego in connection with the shooting at Golden Dragon Asian Bistro in February of 2019. Witnesses in the area that night described a man they say stood outside the restaurant armed with a rifle and opened fire. No one was shot. Witnesses say the gunman then changed clothes, providing a description. Police arrested Parker in the area later in the night. A spokesperson at the Jefferson County Jail in Alabama previously confirmed to 10News that Parker was in custody in recent years. In 2016, he was arrested in Alabama for possession of marijuana and drug trafficking charges. In 2017, he faced charges of distributing methamphetamine and possession of marijuana. Court records also show that Parker faced capital murder charges when he was a teenager in connection with a shooting from a vehicle. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The FBI is investigating following a hazmat situation in La Jolla Thursday afternoon. According to authorities, the incident started around 1 p.m. on the 9400 block of La Jolla Farms Road near UCSD and the Scripps Reserve trail. Throughout the afternoon, people who appeared to be workers at the home could be seen sitting outside with bags wrapped around their lower legs. The unidentified substance is being cleaned up by hazmat crews and, at this time, it's unclear what led to the situation. Neighbors say the home was being rented out and a new tenant recently moved in.The Department of Environmental Health said they found a contaminant and that it is contained with no threat to the community.The final Hazmat crews left around 7:30 p.m. 798
