SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV)  -- A former navy corpsman who's saved hundreds of lives says she was only doing, "What any American would do". Gina Austin could not take seeing the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. She packed up kayaks, jet skis and supplies and headed to Texas where she helped save people and pets. Austin makes it sound simple. But she was elbow deep in devastation for a week. Her first rescue was a tiny one."We found a little Chihuahua and we were calling her baby girl," she said, noting that she worked with a rescue group to help save thousands of animals. "People had chained their animals up so we actually had to go in with bolt cutters. There were dogs just clinging to cars..."At one point, Austin said she saw a family in a steel boat paddling toward her with shovels. "And they asked… did anybody see a little Chihuahua?" Austin said. The family was describing girl baby girl, her first rescue. That day, the family was reunited.  995

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray announced his resignation Tuesday, hours after new sexual abuse allegations surfaced against the embattled politician.The mayor's announcement comes after his cousin gave an interview with the Seattle Times alleging abuse, the latest in a series of allegations against the mayor. The cousin is the fifth person to accuse Murray of child sexual abuse.Murray denied the allegations, as he has in the past. He said he was resigning effective 5 p.m. Wednesday so the scandal would no longer overshadow his office. In light of the latest allegations, he said it was clear it is best for the city for him to step aside."While the allegations against me are not true, it is important that my personal issues do not affect the ability of our city government to conduct the public's business," he said in a statement."To the people of this special city and to my dedicated staff, I am sorry for this painful situation."Council President Bruce Harrell will become mayor upon Murray's resignation, Murray said. Harrell has five days to decide to hold the position for the remainder of Murray's term, which ends in December.Murray was elected in 2014 after 18 years as a state lawmaker. SANDUSKY, Ohio — Just as summer began, so did the immigration raids in northeast Ohio.The first one happened on June 5 at Corsos, a garden and flower center in Sandusky, Ohio where 114 people were arrested as their workday started.Two weeks later, U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement raided another company called Fresh Mark. ICE raided all three of the company's locations, including the one in Canton, Ohio. More than 140 workers were arrested there, many of them accused of using false identification to get their jobs."We want to support our families and we want to protect and defend them so that they don't get split apart which you see is happening all over the place," said Veronica Dahlberg, executive director of HOLA Ohio, a small, grassroots Latino organization based in northeast Ohio.Dahlberg and the folks at HOLA Ohio stepped in to pay some of the bonds for those arrested in Sandusky."So far we've helped 21 of the farm workers, so we post the bonds for them at the Cleveland Heights deportation office," Dahlberg said.HOLA Ohio has raised ,000 to put towards bonding out the workers, and so far they used over ,000.Dahlberg said the family reunions have been bittersweet."When you see those reunions and you can deliver mom to the children or dad back to the household and the people are just so happy," she said. "There's a lot of tears, a lot of hugs, a lot of sadness. Even though mom or dad is home, it's just a long process to try to stay here with their families."Dahlberg said although controversial, she is proud of the work she's doing."People will say 'oh you're helping illegals, you are helping people who are breaking the law,'" Dahlberg said. SCRIPPS RANCH (KGTV): The "shake table" at UC San Diego will soon be able to move just like a real earthquake, thanks to a grant from the National Science Foundation.Researchers at UC San Diego received .3 million for upgrades to the machine."This would become one of the very best centers for earthquake engineering worldwide," says Professor Joel Conte, who teaches in the school's Department of Structural Engineering.Researchers say, right now, the shake table only moves back and forth, rocking large structures placed on top of it. With the grant, they'll be able to change the hydraulics on the machine. Once completed, it will shake back and forth, left and right, up and down and will also pitch, roll and yaw."We'll be able to reproduce real earthquake ground motions much more realistically, much more accurately, and much more completely," says Conte.Building designers and researchers use the shake table to test how structures will react to an earthquake, what kind of damage they'd sustain and whether or not they'd be usable immediately afterward.The shake table can hold multi-story buildings, bridge columns, wind turbines and more. The first structure scheduled to be tested after the upgrade is a 10-story building made from cross-laminated timber.According to the school, the money from the grant will add "new hydraulic pumps, a cooling tower and very large accumulator banks for the facility’s hydraulic-powered system. It will cover the costs of reconfiguring the existing two horizontal actuators, adding another two horizontal actuators, and powering the six vertical actuators to generate table motion."Researchers say it will be the most modern, functional shake table in the world."As soon as it can move in several directions, we will be able to serve all these needs," says Conte. "In the past, the industry in California often had to go to Japan, to China, to Korea. That will not be the case anymore."Construction on the upgrades will start in February of 2020 and be complete by July of 2021. 2042

(KGTV)- California State University San Marcos is preparing students and staff for possible power outages in light of the San Diego Gas and Electric warnings due to fire.At least three CSU schools have been shut down as a result of high winds and power outages. Staff members in San Marcos say they are keeping a close eye on those other universities.Classes proceeded as usual for CSUSM students on Thursday morning. Students say they have been keeping up the outages at other schools via social media. “For a second, I panicked; I really didn’t know it was San Francisco,” says freshman Nancy Salazar Soto. “I was like, oh, it might be me. It might be here in San Marcos.”She believes it would be hard losing power at school, but things would be tougher for the students who live on campus, like freshman Hannah Whitener. “It’s kind of a little bit sketch, you don’t really know everyone around you yet,” says Whitener. “I mean, my freezer, I’m kind of concerned about that.”CSU San Marcos sent out a memo to students late Wednesday afternoon warning them of the possibility of an outage and how to be prepared. “Make sure your car is gassed up in case you do need to relocate. Make sure you’ve got a flashlight handy," says CSUSM Vice President for Community Advancement Cathy Baur. “You’re students; you’re working on their essays and those projects. Make sure you’re saving it on your computer.” Baur says fire prevention is vital. The university knows firsthand after fires in 2014 caused emergency evacuations. “We had to close the campus just days before commencement because the fires were surrounding us and had to do an evacuation of campus,” says Baur. “It’s something that we as campus community are familiar with, we’ve lived through, and so we know how important it is to be prepared and to take any precautions that we can.”The university advises all students to check their emails and social media pages routinely.
