BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Monday urged Communist Party members and government officials to put more efforts in finding and correcting problems that may hinder scientific development and taint the image of the Party.     Xi, also member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, made the remarks during a meeting on the implementation of the Scientific Outlook on Development.     In September 2008, the CPC launched a one and a half year campaign to study and apply the Scientific Outlook on Development, a doctrine adopted by the Party at the 17th CPC National Congress in October 2007.     A total of 11 inspection teams were organized recently to check the results of the campaign in 16 provinces and autonomous regions as well as six central government departments including the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Agriculture.     Xi said the campaign had achieved obvious effects as many Party members had deeper understanding of the Scientific Outlook on Development.     However, Xi stressed Party members and officials still needed to do much more work to fully realize the problems in their work and learn to solve them.     "Coping with the financial crisis, ensuring steady and rapid economic development and the stability of society should be an important part of the campaign," he said.

SHENZHEN, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Chen Yunlin, president of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) said Saturday that the ARATS will offer more support to help Taiwan businessmen weather through the financial crisis.     Chen said this at a symposium here Saturday on the development of Taiwan companies amid the financial crisis.     According to the Taipei World Trade Center, the second purchase delegation from the mainland had shown intention to purchase more than 600 million U.S. dollars worth of goods from Taiwan companies in the coming 12 months during a weeklong visit to the island, mainly involving food, drinks, garments and daily necessities.     "Under the current circumstances, we should positively seek more cooperation opportunities to overcome the hardships," said Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF).     The mainland will send the third procurement delegation to the island in August, focusing on the island's chemical industry, electronic products and automobiles.     More than 50 representatives from the mainland-based Association of Taiwan Investment Enterprises, the Taiwan-based "Chinese National Federation of Industries" and other organizations attended the symposium, which was jointly held by the ARATS and the SEF.

SALZBURG, Austria, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo said here Sunday that exchanges between local regions of China and Austria constitute an important part of bilateral relations.     Wu made the remarks when meeting with Simon Illmer, president of the parliament of the Salzburg Province of Austria.     Wu, who is the first chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC) to visit Austria since 1994, arrived in Salzburg from Vienna on Sunday morning, continuing his official goodwill visit to the country.     Wu said Salzburg has attracted more and more Chinese tourists with its many cultural relics and beautiful natural scenes. He said China treasures its friendly cooperation with Salzburg, hoping that both sides should create a new mode for and further substantiate their cooperation.     Noting China is an important trade partner of Salzburg, Illmer said he believed Wu's visit will promote cooperation in such fields as investment, environmental protection and tourism. BEIJING, May 12 (Xinhua) -- On China's first "Disaster Prevention and Reduction Day" on Tuesday, Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu called for enhancing public awareness of disaster reduction.     Tuesday also marked the first anniversary of the massive Wenchuan earthquake that rocked southwestern Sichuan Province on May 12 last year and claimed more than 69,000 lives, leaving nearly 18,000 missing.     Hui, also director of the National Commission for Disaster Reduction (NCDR), told a forum on disaster prevention and reduction that "efforts should be made to strengthen the foundation of disaster reduction and step up disaster monitoring, relief and reconstruction so as to create sound conditions for social stability."     Approved by the State Council, or Cabinet, the NCDR, Ministry of Civil Affairs, China Earthquake Administration and Beijing Municipal Government jointly staged an emergency drill Tuesday in Beijing's Haidian District, participated in by students and some members of the public, in a simulated earthquake situation. They practiced evacuation, aid in the air and medical aid.     Hui said the country's disaster emergency and legal mechanism on disaster reduction is being constantly improved and the comprehensive reaction in disaster relief was getting better.     The emergency response system had played a key role in dealing with the 8-magnitude quake and snow disaster in southern China last year, as well as severe flooding, drought and typhoon, and greatly saved people's life and reduced economic loss, he said.     "However, the disaster reduction situation is still arduous as various natural disasters are frequent in China," Hui said.     He called for enhancing monitoring and early warning so as to quickly respond to disasters, consolidating various infrastructures and rural and urban constructions, bringing the army's disaster relief role to a full play and improving disaster relief capabilities to ensure stability of disaster-hit areas.     Efforts should be made to strengthen material and technological storage, public education and official training, he said.

BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhua) -- A central government official has urged government complaints-receiving offices at all levels to work hard to contribute to China's reform, development and social stability.     Ma Kai, state councilor and secretary-general of the State Council, made the call during his recent research tour in Anshan and Shenyang of northeast China's Liaoning Province. A main purpose of this trip is to look into grass-roots efforts to respond to public complaints.     During this trip, he paid a visit to the family of Pan Zuoliang, a role model in the complaints-receiving bureau in Liaozhong County, Shenyang. Pan died on duty of cerebral hemorrhage last May. He was praised by the central authorities as a model official in dealing with public complaints.     He also visited urban communities, industrial enterprises and complaints-receiving offices.     Ma said the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the State Council have always attached great importance to the work of dealing with people's complaints.     Since the 16th Party Congress, in 2002, when Hu Jintao took office as the General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, the Party Central Committee has adopted a series of important resolutions and arrangements to improve the work, the official said.     He urged the complaints-receiving officials to safeguard the legal rights and interests of the people and actively solve matters that may cause instability so as to create a sound social environment for the celebrations of the 60th founding anniversary of New China, or the People's Republic of China (PRC).
