SHIJIAZHUANG, Sept.10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Friday, the nation's Teachers' Day, called on teachers to dedicate themselves to rural education, improving teaching standards and contributing to the modernization of the country's education program.Wen made those remarks during a visit to a middle school in Xinglong County of north China's Hebei Province, which is about 135 km from Beijing.Teachers play a key role in primary education, which lays the foundation for a country's development, Wen said, adding that Chinese teachers had made contributions to the country's education cause and modernization drive through hard work and selfless devotion.Wen stressed it was important to improve rural education as it is a matter concerning the long-term development of rural areas and the improvement of people's skills.Persistent efforts would be made to ensure students in rural areas have universal access to schooling and modern education, he said.In 2007, China decided to waive tuition fees for students training to become teachers at six top teaching universities in Beijing, Shanghai, Changchun, Wuhan, Xi'an and Chongqing.To be eligible for free tuition, the student must agree to work at a primary or middle school for at least ten years after graduation and spend the first two years in a rural school.The first group of students who enrolled under the tuition-free program are scheduled to graduate next summer.Eight students from the Beijing Normal University who are in the program joined Wen in his visit to the rural school Friday.Wen urged the students from the university to develop a better understanding of China's rural area, contribute to rural education and help build their hometowns into better places after graduation.The premier asked them to make rural education their career and prepare themselves for hardships and challenges.He said the government would continue its support to the program of tuition-free education for normal school teachers and provide them with opportunities of receiving further education and grant favorable policies in employment.

BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang Wednesday called for accelerated public hospital reforms and the establishment of an essential medicine system to provide better health care.Li, who heads the State Council's leading group on health care reforms, made the remarks at a meeting in Beijing.The essential medicine system planned by the reforms will allow citizens to buy affordable, effective and safe medicines, Li said. BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's just concluded Eurasian visit has promoted ties and traditional friendship between China and five European and Asian countries.Wen paid official visits to Greece, Belgium, Italy and Turkey and an unscheduled visit to Germany, and attended the 8th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) and the 13th China-European Union (EU) summit on Oct. 2-9.During the eight-day tour, Wen attended over 70 events, which covered global challenges, bilateral ties, hot topics and cooperative programs in the forms of lectures, talks, meetings, symposiums and tours.The visit, despite its tight schedule, had rich contents, and was another presentation of China's spectacular diplomatic moves.

VIENNA, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) needs to enhance its role in promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy, non-proliferation and fostering nuclear security, a senior Chinese official said here Monday.Global revitalization of nuclear energy has brought more opportunities for the IAEA to play an even larger role in promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy and technology, said Chen Qiufa, head of the Chinese delegation to the IAEA's 54th General Conference opened in Vienna.Chen, also director general of the China Atomic Energy Authority, told the conference that the IAEA should continue to strengthen technical cooperation for sustainable development of nuclear energy, and give heed to opinions of developing countries.On the issue of nuclear safety, Chen said the IAEA should continue to push forward the development of global nuclear safety and security legislation and standard system, to strengthen transfer of knowledge and exchange of experience, popularize and promote nuclear culture so as to increase public confidence in nuclear energy development.With increasing work load of nuclear verification activities, the agency should build its own technical capability while fully cooperating with member states and using their resources to achieve nuclear safeguards targets, he added.Chen pointed out that the IAEA should play an active role in addressing sensitive and hot-spot nuclear issues.He said China always holds that the nuclear conundrum on the Korean Peninsula and in Iran should be resolved through dialogues and negotiations.China also supported the IAEA and its director general to continue to play their due role to push forward the diplomatic settlement of these issues.
