The Scripps National Spelling Bee has released the 27 titles that are on its 2020-21 Great Words, Great Works booklist. The list of books is for students that span from first to eighth grade and will help students prep for their annual school spelling bee with a list of 450 words that are on the School Spelling Bee Study List each year."Parents and teachers are always looking (especially during the summer) for reading suggestions for kids," The Scripps National Spelling Bee said. "The Scripps National Spelling Bee recognizes the important connection between reading and spelling. Before our competitors were great spellers, they were great readers. With that in mind, the Bee team intentionally selected its school-level spelling study words from engaging, age-appropriate books. The Bee organized those titles into the Great Words, Great Works book list. This year, students can expand their vocabularies and their world views while hearing from a diverse cast of characters on topics such as climate change, homelessness, immigration, gender identity, and the power of dreaming. Messages of friendship, hope, and overcoming adversity connect all 27 books, creating bridges between different cultures and life experiences."Here is a sampling of this year's Great Words, Great Works list:Sulwe by Lupita Nyong’oThe Dog Who Lost His Bark by Eoin ColferAda Twist and the Perilous Pants by Andrea BeatyWhales on Stilts by M.T. The White House has once again lowered the American flag to half-staff, after the flag was left at its full height for most of the day on Monday. In a statement released at about 4 p.m. ET, President Trump ordered flags be flown at half-staff until Sunday, the day of McCain's internment at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. The Trump administration faced criticism from politicians across party lines for choosing to fly the flag at full-staff while the rest of the federal government continued to honor Senator John McCain by keeping the flag low. Ohio Gov. John Kasich called the decision to keep the flags flying high "shameful."While protocol calls for the flag to be flown at half-staff the day and the day after a member of Congress dies, recent tradition has kept the flag at half-staff until sunset on the day of member's interment.   868

The Trump administration issued an order on Friday that will attempt to ban Americans from downloading Chinese-owned social media apps TikTok and WeChat beginning Sunday. The order issued by Commerce Department Sec. Wilbur Ross, requires companies like Apple and Google to remove the apps from their online stores by Sunday. It also orders that all U.S. companies cease working with WeChat to transfer funds or process payments in the app. It's currently unclear if Apple and Google will choose to comply with the Commerce Department's order or if they will choose to file a lawsuit to keep the apps in their stores.“Today’s actions prove once again that President Trump will do everything in his power to guarantee our national security and protect Americans from the threats of the Chinese Communist Party," Ross said in a statement. “At the President’s direction, we have taken significant action to combat China’s malicious collection of American citizens’ personal data, while promoting our national values, democratic rules-based norms, and aggressive enforcement of U.S. laws and regulations.”There will be no penalty for those who have already downloaded the app and continue to use it to communicate. However, the order says that messaging on the apps "could be directly or indirectly impaired” by the order. In the case of TikTok, the order stipulates that its parent company, ByteDance, has until Nov. 12 to "resolve" its national security concerns. ByteDance has been in talks to sell its American business with U.S. software company Oracle.Privacy experts have raised concerns about both Chinese-owned apps, saying Americans' personal information could fall into the hands of the Chinese government. In August, Trump signed an order that set a Sept. 20 deadline for the sale of TikTok's U.S. business."Each collects vast swaths of data from users, including network activity, location data, and browsing and search histories," the Commerce Department's order reads. "Each is an active participant in China’s civil-military fusion and is subject to mandatory cooperation with the intelligence services of the CCP. This combination results in the use of WeChat and TikTok creating unacceptable risks to our national security." 2242

The reboot of "Lizzie McGuire," which was to air on Disney+, is no longer happening.Actress Hilary Duff, who played the lead on the original Disney Channel series that ran from 2001 to 2004, announced on social media Wednesday that the reboot wouldn't happen despite everyone's best interests. In 2019, Disney announced they were relaunching the show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, after several delays, including the firing of creator and revival showrunner Terri Minsky, grounded production after they'd already shot two episodes.Original cast members Adam Lamberg, Hallie Todd, Robert Carradine, and Jake Thomas were set to reprise their roles as well, Variety reported.According to CNN, Duff made a public plea in February asking the series be moved to Disney-owned Hulu from Disney+ so that the show could be a more adult-friendly version. 858
