SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego is close to completing a project that will protect a popular Ocean Beach walking path from erosion.People who live along Orchard Avenue say the pathway that goes along the coast has been falling apart in the past few years, as tidal surges wear away the concrete."It was falling apart. The sidewalk's coming up, you could have tripped," says Tony Nieves, who lives on the corner nearby. "It's nice to see something done about it."Over the winter, the City started construction on a 3,000 project to rebuild the walkway and add break rocks and rip rap to protect it. It's part of a bigger plan to revitalize staircases and walkways along the coast to improve beach access, which the city started working on in 2008.Rainy, windy weather delayed the Orchard Avenue part of the project, which was supposed to be completed by the start of spring.This past week, the city installed large, man-made rocks to the coast to break up waves. They also added green metal cages around them, leading people to fear they'll get so big they may block views."I come down here most nights that I'm not working, just to catch the sunset," says Brittany Hagedorn. "Living a block away makes it easy."In a statement, the City told 10News the boulders will get another layer of concrete above the cages and they hope to have the project completed before Memorial Day Weekend.In the meantime, people who live nearby will have to wait to use the path again.The full statement from the City of San Diego is below:"The man made boulders being constructed are part of the project to reconstruct the beach access walkway at Orchard Ave. The boulders are intended to protect the newly-installed sidewalk, because this section of sidewalk has previously been seriously damaged by tidal surges. After the cages are complete, the boulders will be covered in concrete so as to blend in with the surrounding rip rap. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The battle between rideshare companies and drivers' unions is on the ballot in the form of Proposition 22. It's a way for companies like Uber and Lyft to push back against California's Assembly Bill 5, which classifies drivers as employees with benefits instead of independent contractors.The gig companies are fighting the state in court, so they haven't been following those rules since the law went into effect on Jan. 1. Now, the fate of drivers will be in the hands of California voters on Nov. 3.The Yes on 22 campaign is backed by Uber, Lyft, and Doordash.It would classify drivers as independent contractors.Drivers could work towards a stipend to help purchase their own health insurance.They would also get some hourly pay, but only during what's called "engaged time." Yes on 22 says engaged time starts from the moment a driver accepts a ride until they drop the passenger off. It does not include time drivers spend waiting for their next passenger."If you were to compensate for all the time the driver spent on an app, you'd have to force them to accept every ride that comes across which would eliminate their flexibility to choose when they want to work and how long they want to work," said Vetter.Driver Al Porche says that's exactly why he's voting yes."Times are great right now," said Porche. "I've been driving all this year. I switched over from transporting people to delivering food and meals or groceries."According to the New York Times, rideshare companies have spent more than 0 million promoting the campaign, making it the costliest in state history.A "No" vote on Prop 22 would continue the current ruling under AB 5, reclassifying drivers as employees with a swath of rights and protections.Tonje Ettesvoll is against Prop 22, warning it's deceptive if you don't look closely."When you look at all these ads on TV and social media, that is Uber and Lyft's voice, said Ettesvoll. "That is not the driver's voice."She's been driving full-time for four years in San Diego and says it's only gotten worse."They have cut my rate many, many times to the point where I'm driving from 40 hours a week to 60 with the same pay."Nicole Moore with Rideshare Drivers United says about 40% of the job is waiting for your next ride -- time Prop 22 wouldn't pay up for in terms of pay or benefit because it's not considered engaged time."This is work. Just because you're a cashier in a store and you don't have somebody checking out doesn't mean you're not paid," said Moore. "It is definitely helping the billionaires and the people who are running these companies but it is not helping the drivers."The Yes on 22 campaign says if the proposition doesn't pass rides will be harder to find and prices will go up. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego's Development Services division is still investigating the platform that collapsed at a Barrio Logan gym this weekend and injured 21 minors and a few adults. At least one minor is still in the hospital with a broken pelvis, we're told.A city spokesperson reported to 10 News on Tuesday that no further details would be released until the investigation is complete.On Monday, the spokesperson said there were definite code violations and missing permits at Vault PK parkour gym, where the incident happened. Whether the gym will face any penalties is still unknown. The gym has only been open for a few months. On a Facebook post, it appears much of the construction of the facility was done by the owner's immediate family.  On Monday, San Diego Police Department's media relations division confirmed that the incident is a civil matter and the department will not be recommending any criminal charges, including criminal negligence.  There is another Vault PK parkour gym in Torrance. We called the facility today. Someone answered the phone and said the facility is closed for inspections. No further details were given.  1222

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The crowds at San Diego International Airport grew Friday night, as travelers kicked off the holiday travel weekend. AAA predicts a record-breaking 115 million Americans will travel this holiday season, up nearly 4 percent from last year. Of those travelers, AAA estimates 105 million people will drive, 7 million will fly, and 4 million will take the train, bus, or cruise ships. According to AAA, airports around the US will be busiest between Dec. 21 through 23. Melissa Flatley flew in from Reno, Nev. Flatley laughed. 10News also met the Monje family. The San Diego family of five was headed to Jacksonville, Fla., to visit family. They said they were travel pros, who purposely wait until the last second to fly, thanks to father Joel's job at Southwest Airlines. "I literally cannot come home to see them until I have to leave to come and do it, so it means a lot. We all get together. It doesn't happen all the time," Jauan said.
