Ron DeSantis is proposing controversial legislation that would expand Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law that would allow for the use of force against protesters and looters.The expansion of the law includes language that would grant business owners protection in response to criminal acts during protests, like looting.The legislation would also make blocking traffic during a protest a third-degree felony. Greg Abbott called for action on Friday in the wake of a deadly school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas."We need to do more than just pray for the victims and their families," said Abbott, a Republican, during a news conference in response to the shooting. Students are demanding change after the deadly Florida High School shooting.On Monday, a group of teens from Maryland held a lie-in near the White House to stand with the victims of last week's mass shooting.The group, called Teens for Gun Reform, held the lie-in at 12:15 p.m. between the White House and Lafayette Park. Demonstrators lied on the ground for three minutes to symbolize how long it took the suspected gunman to buy the AR 15 rifle used in the attack.Many students who survived the shooting are now speaking out against gun violence. They are calling for a nationwide student and teacher walkout on March 14 to demand tougher gun laws. There are also talks of an anti-gun violence demonstration in Washington, D.C. and other cities across the country on March 24."My message for the people in office is you're either with us or against us. State legislators will vote Monday on an emergency bill to block evictions across California when a moratorium expires on Sept. 1.The bill would extend the moratorium protections for tenants through January 2021, but evictions could resume in February.This bill, called the COVID-19 Tenant Relief Act of 2020, does two major things to protect tenants:1) It converts unpaid rent from March 1 to Aug. 31 to civil debt, meaning a tenant cannot be evicted for nonpayment. Instead, that person can ultimately be taken to small claims court.2) It prevents eviction of tenants who pay at least 25 percent of their rent from Sept. 1. to Jan 31, 2021. If a tenant pays at least 25 percent, the rest would be converted to civil debt. Otherwise, a landlord can begin eviction proceedings Feb. 1, 2021.Governor Gavin Newsom announced he would sign the bill once it reaches his desk.The Southern California Rental Housing Association expressed major concerns about the legislation, saying it does not protect against financial ruin for landlords.
