OJAI, Calif. (KGTV) - As many as 700 wild rats, along with dogs, rabbits, a parrot and a cat were found living in an Ojai home at the center of an elder abuse investigation, Ventura County Sheriff’s deputies said Wednesday. Deputies were first alerted to the situation on Mar. 13, when they responded to a “check-the-wellbeing” call initiated by Ventura County Adult Protective Services. APS officials suspected Catherine Vandermaesen of not properly caring for her 96-year-old father, who lived at the home with Vandermaesen and her 74-year-old sister. Deputies who went to the family’s home said the smell of ammonia and urine was detectable 20 feet away from the house. Vandermaesen, they said, refused to let them into the home. A task force of Ojai deputies and detectives said Vandermaesen allowed her father and the animals to remain in conditions not fit for living. Vandermaesen’s father was taken to the hospital and is now under the care of Ventura County Adult Protection Services. Vandermaesen’s sister was also treated at the hospital for unknown reasons and gained temporary housing. Animal Control officials impounded the animals, including 55 rats, but estimated as many as 700 more rats were still loose in the two-bedroom home. Ojai Code Enforcement officials yellow-tagged the residence as a danger to occupants. Vandermaesen was arrested on suspicion of felony elder abuse and misdemeanor failure to care for animals. 1446

On World Autism Awareness Day, Monday, April 2, Pennsylvania theme park Sesame Place announced that it was the first theme park in the world to complete training to become a Certified Autism Center (CAC). The park's certification was granted by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). IBCCES says that Sesame Place is "the first theme park in the world to receive such a distinction."Sesame Place is located at 100 Sesame Road in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. The park features rides, shows, parades, and full size characters and opens for the season on April 28 at 10:00 a.m.The Sesame team members were trained in sensory awareness, motor skills, autism overview, program development, social skills, communication, environment, and emotional awareness, so that staff members can cater to all guests who visit the park. One of the most helpful outcomes of this certification is the IBCCES?Sensory Guide, which breaks down each of the rides' stimuli. This guide grades the rides in terms of touch, taste, sound, smell, and sight stimulation. The senses are scored from 1, which is a low stimulation, to 10, which is a high stimulation. The park has quiet rooms for guests needing to recover from sensory stimulation from the rides. They also have noise-canceling headphones, or WhispEars, on a first come, first served basis for guests with hearing sensitivity. The park has special areas people can go to and still enjoy parades, without being overwhelmed with direct character interaction. Guests can also take pictures with Julia, a Sesame Street character with autism. Additional resources include Autism Travel, which can help parents explore travel options, and a workshop called See Amazing in All Children, which offers tips to simplify daily life and grow support in the community.Sesame Place has many more options to accommodate with guests needs. On Monday, electors gathered to formally affirm that President-elect Joe Biden was indeed the victor of the 2020 Presidential Election.During his Electoral College victory speech Monday night in Wilmington, Delaware, Biden spoke about how all Americans have the right to have their vote counted."In America, politicians don't take power," Biden said during his speech. "People grant power to them. The flame of democracy was lit in this nation a long time ago. And we now know nothing, not even a pandemic or an abuse of power, can extinguish that flame."He also praised election officials, who Biden said endured threats of violence and verbal abuse."One of the extraordinary things we saw this year was that everyday Americans, our friends and our neighbors, often volunteers, Democrats, Republicans, Independents, demonstrating absolute courage, they showed a deep and unwavering faith in and a commitment to the law," Biden said. "They did their duty in the face of the pandemic. And then they could not and would not give credence to what they knew is not true."WATCH RECAP:At 7:10 p.m. ET, Hawaii reported its electoral vote which had Biden receiving 306 votes to President Donald Trump’s 232 votes.Around 5:30 p.m. ET, President-elect Joe Biden received enough votes to affirm his presidential election win.California's 55 electoral votes put him over the 270-vote threshold with 302 votes Monday afternoon after a day of voting in each state.Electors meet at a place and time determined by their state and cast their votes. Voting took place throughout the country at various times Monday. Vermont was the first state to cast electoral votes when submitted its three votes for Biden. Tennessee followed shortly after by submitting its 11 votes for Trump. As of 5:30 p.m. ET, 534 out of the 538 Electoral Votes had been cast. Biden is expected to get 306 votes to Trump's 232 based on the results of the presidential election.Hawaii is the last state to cast their Electoral College votes, at 7 p.m. ET. Its 4 votes are expected to go to Biden. The Electoral College votes are formally counted during a joint session of Congress on January 6. Typically, the Electoral College vote is little more than a rubber stamp approval of the November election. However, the post-electoral government machinery has received more attention than in elections past due to President Donald Trump's attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. For instance, Trump has been personally pressuring Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, a Republican, to appoint a special session of the state legislator in the hopes of appointing new Electoral College voters — and threatening not to campaign for two Republican Senators that are up for re-election in January. Those two elections will determine which party controls the Senate for the next two years. 2842

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A hotel approved for Oceanside Boulevard is frustrating many residents.City leaders who supported the 99-room Fairfield Inn & Suite say concerns brought up about the location were addressed by staff. They also told 10News that, once complete, the hotel will bring in more than 0,000 tax dollars per year.Regardless, residents who live in the area say the site selected will create traffic problems. Beyond that - it will mean that their neighborhood will get noisy. "This location is difficult to get in and out of," one resident said. "There's no benefit to being right there."City leaders say the location is ideal because it's close to Interstate-5.  715
