INDIANAPOLIS — The Marion County Coroner will be releasing the autopsy results to the family of Dreasjon Reed on the same day the family was planning a press conference to demand its release. The 21-year-old man was shot and killed by an IMPD officer following a pursuit on May 6.The Reed family lawyers had requested a copy of the autopsy report, which the Marion County Coroner's Office says was completed on June 12 and then sent to the special prosecutor, but were initially denied their request after the special prosecutor asked that the report not be released. The Reed family had scheduled a press conference for 11 a.m. on Aug. 5 outside the Marion County Coroner's Office to demand the report be released. The Marion County Coroner issued a statement just after 10 a.m. saying they had received a decision from the Marion Superior Court that morning authorizing the release of the autopsy report to Reed's mother, Demetree Wynn. After receiving the report from the coroner's office, Wynn still addressed the media gathered at the coroner's office."You can not do what you did to my son and tell me it was right," Wynn said. "I've been a nurse for 20 years and I'm not stupid. Don't insult my intelligence by assuming I don't know how to read. I know what it says. And if it was your child, I promise you, you couldn't stand here.""I can't breathe, my heart hurts. But I'm still standing here and there ain't no way in hell you can do that to somebody else's kid and be okay with it," Wynn said. "If you're okay with it, let me do it to your son and I'm gonna show you how it feels. I promise you that."The Special Prosecutor overseeing the case, Rosemary Khoury, released the following statement following the release of the report."The Marion County Superior Court has ruled to allow the release of the autopsy report by the Marion County Coroner to the family of Dreasjon Reed. We fully anticipate that the family attorney will adhere to the confidentiality requirements set forth by the Indiana Code which prohibits the release of certain information contained in the report. The State has petitioned the Court to allow for the investigation to be completed before releasing the report so that a thorough and complete investigation could be conducted. The investigation is still ongoing and the team respects and will adhere to the Court's decision as it works to provide as comprehensive an investigation as possible."Khoury was appointed as the special prosecutor on June 4. On July 2, the court ordered IMPD and the Marion County lab to turn over all evidence to Indiana State Police. Khoury has until December 2021 to complete her investigation into the case.WRTV's Katie Cox first reported this story. 2723

It’s a slogan meant to convey how delicious the food is, but KFC says they are pausing the use of “finger-licking good” in their marketing because it does not seem appropriate for 2020.“Think we can all agree, this year has been like no other and, right now, our slogan doesn’t feel quite right,” reads a light-hearted statement from the company.Maybe they are referring to the CDC urging Americans to wear masks and not touch their faces to stop the spread of the coronavirus.KFC’s marketing team also had some fun blurring the slogan from old billboards and commercials in a YouTube video posted Monday. The slogan has been used in connection with KFC’s chicken for 64 years.“We find ourselves in a unique situation—having an iconic slogan that doesn’t quite fit in the current environment. While we are pausing the use of It’s Finger Lickin’ Good, rest assured the food craved by so many people around the world isn’t changing one bit.” said Catherine Tan-Gillespie, global chief marketing officer at KFC.The company admits they are having a little fun with the slogan and the realities of 2020, and the slogan will be back in the future. 1148

INDIANAPOLIS – A veteran and retired postal worker missed his funeral after his remains were lost in the mail delivery process. The ashes of Richard Nelson, who once served in the Navy, remain missing.Years after leaving the military, Nelson headed for Arizona and left specific instructions to his family on how he wanted services handled following his death. In July, the funeral home in Arizona mailed Nelson’s remains on August 1, and the tracking number stated it was to arrive in Indianapolis on August 2.Nelson’s nephew, Scott Hare, had plans to drive the ashes to Michigan for services – but he never received the package. The memorial service went on as scheduled and the cemetery plot next to his parents had to be refilled until further notice."I have to keep telling people I don't know anything, there's no closure,” said Hare.Hare said his moments of sorrow were overcome with pride.“At some point, I had to laugh,” said Hare. “He retired from the post office and was lost at the post office. I'm sure he's laughing somewhere.”The post office released a statement: 1083

It kind of feels like a concert, but there’s no musical performance. It’s former First Lady Michelle Obama, having a conversation with tens of thousands of people during her “Becoming” tour stop in Denver.  “This has been an amazing day being here with all of you,” Obama says.  The event, however, was just one part of the time she spent in the community. Just hours earlier, Emma Jones and her mom were among the hundreds of patients and families who packed the lobby of Children’s Hospital Colorado for the surprise visit. After a warm welcome, Obama sat down with Santa to read a book and answer questions from her young audience members.  “Was there really a movie theater in the White House?” asked one child.  Other questions were more serious, including one that asked Obama what advice she’d give to her younger self.“Don't let fear stop you from doing things that will help you grow,” she replied.  “Just being at the hospital and like knowing that something is going on with you in the first place, it's kind of scary,” says patient Emma Jones. “But like just hearing that message from someone who cares a lot about everybody is just super empowering and like it was just really cool.”Following the hospital stop, Obama signed copies of her book at a local bookstore.   With eight tour stops so far, all of them include some form of giving back to young people. In Detroit, Obama surprised a group of college students, sitting in on a discussion on education. In Boston, she made a stop at a Boys and Girls Club, and in Los Angeles, she read books to preschoolers.  It's a reflection of what Obama says is closest to her heart.  “I love kids. If I could spend every day with kids, like you all day, I would do that every single day,” Obama says. 1823

INDIANAPOLIS — Veteran's Affairs in Indianapolis says multiple graves at a Confederate burial site were smeared with tar and feathers earlier this month. The VA is seeking information that could lead to the identification of those responsible for smearing tar and feathers on graves in the "Confederate Mound" section of Crown Hill Cemetery."Vandalism and defacement of federal property is a serious crime, and VA is working with law enforcement officials to identify those responsible," the department said in a statement. "VA is committed to maintaining our cemeteries as national shrines, and that includes cleaning these gravesites, which memorialize those interred at the cemetery."The vandalism was discovered on June 6. Crown Hill Cemetery groundskeeper David Deems said he believes the graves were defaced that morning because the tar was still soft when he found it.Deems said he was able to clean most of the substance off the graves, but some remnants remain. The Confederate Mound is a federally-owned national cemetery that does not belong to Crown Hill Cemetery, though it is on its property. According to Crown Hill's website, 1,600 Confederate prisoners of war were buried at the site after they died at Camp Morton, a military base in Indianapolis.Anyone with information about the vandalism should contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.This story was originally published by Katie Cox on WRTV in Indianapolis. 1453
