SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Over the next three days, City of San Diego crews will remove hundreds of palm trees from the Rueda Canyon in Tierrasanta by helicopter.The city is working with the San Diego Canyonlands nonprofit and the San Diego River Conservancy throughout the process, which is expected to last through Friday.Hikers and joggers are warned not to enter the canyon while the tree removal is underway.“It’s extremely dangerous for anyone to be in there, it’ll actually stop the operations,” said Eric Bowlby, Executive Director of San Diego Canyonlands.The palm trees are not native to this region. Bowlby added they aggressively establish themselves and grow along the narrow stream at the bottom of canyons. The trees absorb so much water, they hinder the growth of all the native plants in the area.Because these palm trees grow so quickly, they’re also very hard to maintain. Dead fronds often create a skirt around the trees that’s not only a fire hazard but also becomes an area for pests, like rats, to live and breed.“We’re going to be removing some 300 mature Mexican Fan and Canary Island Palm Trees from Rueda Canyon,” said Bowlby. “That would be about 90,000 pounds of fuel that would otherwise remain in the canyon and in the event of a fire add a tremendous amount of danger and fuel to the community.”Once the trees are removed, they will be replace with trees native to our region, like Willows and Coast Live Oaks.The project was funded with money from a state grant. 1498

Voters must be registered at least 15 days before an election. If they fail to meet this requirement, they can conditionally register and vote provisionally, according to the San Diego Registrar of Voters. Voting materials, including sample ballots, are mailed starting 29 days before an election. If you changed your name, moved, or want to switch political parties, you must re-register to vote with a new application. In order to register to vote in California, you must be a U.S. citizen, a state resident, at least 18 years old before the next election, not in prison or on parole for a felony, and not declared mentally incompetent by the court. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a man they say shot someone outside a liquor store in San Diego’s Mountain View neighborhood Saturday night.According to police, the incident happened on the 3700 block of Ocean View Boulevard at 10:10 p.m.Police say the suspect approached the 45-year-old man while at the liquor store and started an argument. During the argument, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the 45-year-old before walking away.The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries by his mother. The suspect was only described as a black man wearing glasses, a black hoodie and baggy blue jeans. 645

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Parents say they're disappointed after witnessing what they say was disrespect of the flag and national anthem at a high school basketball game. One parent captured video of the incident at Lincoln High School. They have a student at St. Augustine and say it was the second time they witnessed Lincoln High players sitting down during the anthem. The parent described the players as talking and joking around during it.A grandfather at the game, who is a Vietnam veteran, says he too was offended. He wrote a letter to Lincoln's principal and wants to sit down with him to discuss the issue. The veteran believes the players were disrespectful and says their actions were not in line with the school's mission statement.10News spoke with the school's basketball coach by phone who says he doesn't believe students meant to be disrespectful. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a suspect who reportedly stole a cello worth 0,000 from a Mission Valley hotel room.According to police, the incident happened on August 8 between 8 and 10 p.m. at the Town and Country hotel on the 500 block of Hotel Circle North.Police say the suspect forced their way into the hotel room, which was unoccupied at the time, and stole several items, including the rare, custom-made cello.The cello was made by Mario Miralles and has a label that reads “Mario Miralles 2010 Alta Dena California”.
