SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A family wants the Governor of California to keep the man who murdered three San Diego State professors behind bars. Frederick Davidson was sent to prison in 1997 for three consecutive life sentences without parole after he gunned down his three engineering professors Chen Liang, Preston Lowry, and Constantinos Lyrintzis.The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office recently notified the victims’ families that Davidson applied for executive clemency.“Just asking for clemency?  Out of what?  On what grounds?” asked a distraught Esther Alonso, Lyrintzis’ sister-in-law.  Lyrintzis was married to her sister, Deana Alonso, and the couple had a young daughter.A District Attorney’s Office spokesman said the DA’s office already filed a letter opposing Davidson’s request.Alonso told 10News she could not believe Davidson would request clemency.  Alonso said the family agreed to not seek the death penalty in 1997 if Davidson agreed to plead guilty and go to prison for life without parole.“How can they tell them 20 years later that the deaths of their husbands and their fathers…that this guy has more rights than they do?” asked Alonso, a professor at Southwestern College. “I don’t understand a system where that is even possible.”Alonso created a Change.org petition directed at Governor Jerry Brown asking him to deny Davidson’s request.The DA’s spokesman said their office opposed more than 50 clemency requests last year and none of those requests were granted.  The spokesman added there is no deadline for Governor Brown to respond or send it to a hearing. 1627

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement trade deal includes 0 million in funding to address cross-border pollution in the Tijuana River Valley, San Diego's congressional delegation announced Wednesday. The funding would be dispersed in four annual installments of million in the form of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grants under its Border Water Infrastructure Program. In June, the fiscal year 2020 federal budget for the BWIP was only million, according to the office of Rep. Scott Peters, D-San Diego. ``The USMCA delivers a massive funding investment that can fix the Tijuana River's sewage spills once and for all,'' Peters said. ``This funding can stop the environmental crisis that has plagued our community for decades and will improve public health.'' The bulk of the funding would be used to expand and upgrade the South Bay International Wastewater Treatment Plant, operated by the International Boundary and Water Commission. The funding would be used to fortify the plant's water treatment capabilities, allowing it to stanch flows of polluted storm and wastewater into the river. ``Cross border pollution is a nightmare for our community and for the individuals that work and recreate near the border,'' Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina said. ``This funding is a critical step towards cleaning up the contamination in the Tijuana River Valley and making our beach safe for surfers and others who enjoy our coast.'' Transborder pollution from the Tijuana River has contaminated U.S. waters and coastlines for decades, forcing San Diego County environmental health officials to regularly close beach access near the border. During that time, local and state officials and environmental activists have called for federal assistance to protect the health of the environment and residents near the border. In April, Sens. Kamala Harris and Dianne Feinstein, D-California, submitted a jointly written letter to multiple federal agencies requesting they address sewage runoff in the river. In July, Peters and Reps. Juan Vargas, D-San Diego, and Mike Levin, D- Oceanside, introduced legislation to increase funding for Tijuana River cleanup efforts and prevention of future pollution. And in September, the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce's annual delegation of local officials and business leaders discussed the issue with cabinet officials and members of Congress. ``This environmental issue has plagued our region for generations and this funding will take major strides in helping us address health and ecological challenges we face,'' Levin said. ``Along with my colleagues, I made it clear to the Trump administration and House Democratic leadership that it is long past time that we make robust investments in cleaning up polluted water that flows over the border.'' The San Diego chapter of the Surfrider Foundation and the city of San Diego have also filed lawsuits against the IBWC, arguing that it has neglected pollution in the river and its effect on the environment. The city jointly filed its lawsuit with California Attorney General Xavier Becerra. The pending funding is a result of Tuesday's deal between congressional Democrats and the White House to support a revised USMCA. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, said the modified trade agreement includes more strenuous labor and environmental standards for the three countries. House Democrats are now expected to vote for the deal's ratification and send it to the Republican-controlled Senate. The USMCA would replace the North American Free Trade Agreement, which went into effect in 1994 and is blamed by some politicians on both sides of the aisle for hastening outsourcing and the decline of the country's manufacturing industries. President Donald Trump, who campaigned on retooling NAFTA, has faced pushback from members of Congress for much of the year for elements of the original deal like tariffs on steel and aluminum and its enforcement provisions. Local business leaders and elected officials have sung the deal's praises for months, arguing that inter-border commerce is too vital to the San Diego region to sever trade relations between the U.S. and Mexico. The current U.S. legislature and Canadian parliament must still approve the deal for it to go into effect. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A driver escaped serious injury after falling asleep behind the wheel and crashing his pickup truck on state Route 52 in the Kearny Mesa area.The crash happened at around 11:45 p.m. Thursday on the eastbound side of SR-52 near the transition to Interstate 805, the California Highway Patrol said.ABC 10News learned a man was driving his work truck when he fell asleep, leading his vehicle to roll over several times across freeway lanes before coming to rest on the right shoulder.The driver was able to crawl out of the wreckage and was evaluated for minor injuries by paramedics at the scene. He was not taken to the hospital.No other injuries or crashes related to the incident were reported. 723

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A colony of 300,000 bees lives on the roof of the Marriott Marquis in Downtown San Diego, and the hotel says that's perfectly fine with them.In fact, they planned it that way.The bees are part of Bee Leaf USA's Urban Bee Keeping program, which is an effort to help the struggling American Honey Bee population."This is the absolute most fantastic thing we can do for beekeeping at this point," says Travis Wolfe, from Bee Leaf USA."For a corporate entity to onboard something as outlandish as honey bees to offset their carbon footprint is one of the most moving and engaging things that one of these businesses can do," he says.The bees have been on the roof for about five years. They gather pollen in a three-mile radius around the hotel.They also make honey -- lots of it."They make about 7 gallons a year," says Wolfe. "That really is an enormous amount to consume."Fortunately, the hotel's Marina Kitchen and Bar helps use the honey."The ethos of the restaurant is to be as local as possible," says Executive Chef Aron Schwartz. "What could be more local than our roof?"Schwartz has put the honey in seasonal offerings for the last few years. Recently, it's been part of the salad dressing in their tomato and cucumber salad. It's also been featured on the charcuterie board and in a honey almond cake."It's about being restrained," says Schwartz. We're not going to put honey into 16 dishes. We're going to put it in one or two."This month, the bar is adding a honey-infused whiskey to several of its cocktails. They've partnered with Malahat Distillery in Miramar, which is aging their whiskey for six months in barrels coated with honey from the roof of the Marriott."We get a more naturally infused honey flavor out of that than some of the bigger producers who just stir honey into the whiskey," says Bar Operations Supervisor Michael Girard."It tastes amazing. You can smell the honey, you can taste the honey, but it's not a sweet sugar bomb," Girard says.The drinks will be available throughout the summer. Meanwhile, the bees will stay on the roof indefinitely."It really is a true demonstration of fantastic sustainability," says Wolfe. 2179

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A boy who went missing from Pacific Beach Wednesday night has been found safe, San Diego Police say. The department tweeted just before 6 p.m. that 10-year-old Richard had been found safe. "Update: He has been safely reunited with his parents," the department said. According to police, the boy went missing from the area of Cass Street and Missouri Street. Police sent out the tweet around 4 p.m. 425
