SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Snoopy’s San Diego Comic-Con pop-up store is celebrating the Peanuts gang’s history with NASA and the Apollo 10 mission. In 1969, Apollo 10 used a lunar module to “snoop around” the moon’s surface in advance of the Apollo 11 moon landing. The crew named the module “Snoopy” and the command module “Charlie Brown”. As Gene Cernan, Apollo 10's Lunar Module Pilot once said, "No one remembers Apollo 10—until you tell them our spacecrafts were named Snoopy and Charlie Brown, and they say 'Oh! I remember!' " To honor the 50th anniversary, Oscar-winning director Morgan Neville created “Peanuts in Space: Secrets of Apollo 10”, a mockumentary demonstrating the ties between the beloved cartoons and the space agency. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University is suspending spring 2020 programs to Italy amid the spread of the novel coronavirus. The university said in an update to students Monday that it was calling all students studying abroad in Italy back to the United States. The decision was made due to the elevated level three travel advisories the CDC and State Department issued for the country. At the moment, the university doesn’t have any plans to cancel classes. University officials say they won’t make such plans unless directed by the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency. In late February, both San Diego State University and UC San Diego canceled study abroad programs in South Korea amid the spread of coronavirus. 987

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Several San Diego families got their loved ones home in time for the holidays.The Crew of the Future USS Tulsa arrived in San Diego Wednesday.  The ship is a brand new littoral combat ship that completed its maiden voyage from the Austal Shipyard in Mobile Alabama.The crew, from San Diego, had been gone for eight months. Before arriving in San Diego, the ship made several port calls and completed a successful transit through the Panama Canal.The ship’s commissioning ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 16, 2019, in San Francisco.  That is when the vessel will officially join the fleet. 628

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — She's a pre-med student at UCSD with hopes of becoming a neurosurgeon, and for the last year-and-a-half, Shea Cruise has been homeless.Like so many on the UCSD campus, the senior's plate is pretty full. The neuroscience student has a rigorous course load."I was taking 20 units this quarter, full time is 12," said Cruise, 23.But her studies aren't the only thing occupying her thoughts. When classes are over and she's finished her shift as a server, Cruise must figure out where she's going to sleep.She calls her 2006 Ford Focus home. She's parked it in store lots, near the beach and in campus parking structures overnight. She qualifies for some financial aid but it's enough to cover her tuition. Shortly after transferring to the school two summers ago from Cerro Coso Community College in Ridgecrest, she decided to live in her car to save money. "I shower in the gym on campus," said Cruise.Cruise also borrows her textbooks — whatever it takes. "This was something I had to do to reach my goals. Something I was willing to sacrifice," said Cruise. Then, four weeks ago came an unexpected medical diagnosis, which will force her to take leave from her job for appointments and treatment.Cruise started a Gofundme campaign to help with tuition and other expenses, at the same time revealing a truth few on campus were aware of."It's an invisible population. Speaking about it hopefully will bring more light not to me but others in my position," said Cruise.As for her academic position, she currently has a 3.8 GPA and is determined to graduate this June."I don't look at my situation as a victim. I look at it as a lesson. It teaches me to be more empathetic toward other people. I hope to one day be able to help people," said Cruise.If she's able to graduate, she'll spend some time saving up money before applying for medical schools like Stanford, UCLA and Harvard next year. 1923
