Bush reminisced about the 41st president of the United States on Saturday after learning of Bush's passing.Mauri Sheer spent two years with the Bush family during his presidency before he was appointed as a U.S. Marshal in the Kansas City area. Sheer, who worked in the Secret Service for nearly three decades, served six presidents."From Gerald Ford through George W. Bush," Sheer said.But it was his time with George H.W. Bush, who died Friday night at his home in Texas, that he thought about most this weekend."He was constantly moving, and when he would move, he would move fast," Sheer said. "If you were working right ahead of him in the perimeter around him and you were right ahead of him, you'd have to be careful if you slowed down because he'd run you right over."Sheer said that same energy went into his golf game. "They say he played golf almost like you play hockey," Sheer said. "He'd hit the ball and the ball's almost done moving and he's just constantly moving."Sheer said the moment he'd never forget was the day Ronald Reagan was released from the hospital after he'd been shot. Sheer said he and Bush were running a 10-kilometer race that morning. "He didn't run as fast as he thought he was going to and he was pressed for time and he was behind and he was afraid he was going to miss it," Sheer said.As usual, Bush didn't miss a beat.Sheer said that's one thing he'll always remember. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A group of St. Teresa’s Academy (Missouri) students were suspended following a Snapchat that showed them posing with beer pong cups arranged in a swastika.The picture, which was taken at a gathering off-campus during after-school hours, contained the caption, “Girls night!”The incident was met with outrage from alumni of the private, all-girls Catholic high school in Brookside.“Multiple people that I went to school with at St. Teresa's had posted on Facebook about it,” explained Maggie Henehan, who graduated from the school in 2008. “I was very disturbed and surprised."Alumni told Kansas City-based KSHB that the girls involved allegedly received a one day in-school suspension, which required them to write to their future colleges about the incident.“I feel that it was very lenient. I was surprised,” explained Henehan. “I remember people getting harsher punishments for getting caught drinking or being caught drinking outside of campus."In a statement sent to KSHB, the school said it was unable to report every detail of the case due to privacy and legal issues.However, the statement noted how the school conducted an investigation into the matter.“A group of STA students were drinking alcohol and participating in a beer drinking game. A picture of their activity, which was unrelated to any school sponsored event, took place off school property and after school hours, was posted on social media. The beer drinking game involved the placement of cups in a sequence resembling a hateful symbol,” the statement read. “Upon the incident being brought to our attention, STA leadership undertook an internal, as well as external investigation. We investigated the underage drinking as well as the potential for racial discrimination. We also involved the Kansas City Missouri Police Department.”After looking into the case, the school said penalties were handed down to the students involved.“Internal and external investigations concluded that this is a case of inappropriate and unlawful underage drinking,” the statement read. “After careful and complete review by the STA senior administrative team and in accordance with school policies, the students involved were disciplined.”The school did not comment on the specific penalties the students received.Moving forward, Henehan hoped the school would take a more aggressive stance against racism.“I hope that St Teresa's will step up and do what they need to do to make sure everyone feels welcome and everyone feels safe,” she explained. “It's definitely an opportunity for growth. (CNS) - Thousands of University of California service workers are expected to begin a three-day strike Monday at campuses and medical facilities across the state, including at UC San Diego's Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla.Service workers represented by Local 3299 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees voted overwhelmingly last month to authorize a strike if no progress were made in negotiations.UC officials have repeatedly criticized the union for calling the strike, accusing it of rejecting an offer of "fair, multi-year wage increases and excellent medical and retirement benefits."In light of the impasse, the university system last month imposed contract terms on the union for the 2017-18 fiscal year, including 2 percent pay increases. The UC's latest contract offer to the union included annual 3 percent raises over the next four years, according to the university.The union denounced the move to impose contract terms, responding by issuing a notice of a strike set to last until Wednesday."We've bargained in good faith for over a year to address the widening income, racial and gender disparities that front-line, low-wage workers at UC are living every day," AFSCME Local 3299 President Kathryn Lybarger said. "Instead of joining us in the effort to arrest these trends, UC has insisted on deepening them -- leaving workers no option but to strike."UC officials said in a statement that they "strongly disagree with AFSCME's decision to strike, which will negatively impact patients, students and the UC community.""We are doing everything in our power to limit disruptions on our campuses and medical centers to ensure our patients get the care they need and our students the services they deserve," according to the UC.The UC insisted that its service workers -- including custodians, gardeners, food service workers and facilities maintenance staff -- are compensated at or above the market rate, "and in some cases, by as much as 17 percent higher than comparable jobs."The university Monday said it currently pays workers anywhere between just over ,000 for food service to more than 1,000 for a respiratory therapist.University officials said the union is demanding a 6 percent annual wage increase, "which is twice what other UC employees have received."They said their final offer included, in addition to the pay raises, a lump-sum payment upon contract ratification, health benefits consistent with those of other workers and continuation of pension benefits for existing employees.
