SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A thief with a U-Haul truck and young accomplice made off with a haul at a home in Rancho San Diego.Sue Sobke and her husband returned to their home on Calle Deposito Saturday night and found their patio sliding door shattered. "Just a violation. A lot of fear and panic," said Sobke.Inside, two rooms were ransacked. The jewelry box in her bedroom was emptied of hundreds of pieces. Many of the piece were sentimental, one in particular. Her father, a World War II veteran, bought her mother a gold ring while in China after the war. Both of her parents have passed. "Felt close to her ... means my mom and how much I loved her. How much my dad loved her ... now it's gone," said Sobke.Her mission to get it back could depend on a piece of surveillance video. The video shows a U-Haul truck making a turn near her home. Neighbors spotted it parked in front of her home. "They saw a man in my backyard, in his 40s, fit and wearing a hat," said Sobke.Sitting in the truck was a boy about 12 years old."A neighbor saw the boy in the truck listening to music. He waved at him and drove off," said Sobke.Whether the boy was used as a lookout or diversion, Sobke can only shake her head."It's clever. I'll admit that. No one would suspect a young boy waiting for his father. It's horrible, training him," said Sobke.The training may not be over. Detectives told Sobke that a U-Haul truck has been seen near other break-ins in the area. "For about three weeks, they've been chasing this U-Haul truck," said Sobke.A sheriff's department spokesperson says the burglary has not yet been linked to any other cases. 1631

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After receiving criticism from the Chicano Federation, UCSD Health officials met with the group Friday to review plans to recruit volunteers for a COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial.The Chicano Federations sent the following statement Thursday after hearing about UCSD’s plans to enroll approximately 1,600 volunteers to participate in the AstraZeneca COVIS-19 Phase 3 clinical trial:“Once again, the burden of COVID-19 is falling on communities of color. It is unfair that underserved communities who have the least access to information are now being targeted to participate in an experimental vaccine. This tactic, unfortunately, does not come as a surprise given that this country has a history of using people of color for experimental medical treatments. We did meet with UC San Diego, and we are going to be working with them in making sure that our community receives the education around these clinical trials.”Maldonado said community outreach would ensure that volunteers have all of the information necessary to make informed decisions.“When outreach is done in a way that is respectful to the community that different then some of the other approaches that other clinical trials are taking,” she said.UCSD made it clear that this trial is entirely voluntary, and consent forms will be available in English and Spanish.“I would just encourage anyone who has any questions or who might also be confused about the different trials and what’s going on, to contact the community-based organization that they know and trust to get some more information,” said Maldonado.The trial is expected to begin on Sept. 8. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego State University study abroad student and a University of San Diego graduate student have both tested positive for the coronavirus, the universities announced Friday.The SDSU student was studying abroad in Italy and recently returned home to the United States. The student is self-isolating at his home outside of San Diego County, the university said in a release.They added that the student visited two off campus offices for a brief period of time, and did not attend any classes."Due to the student's limited contact with the campus, we consider that the risk to the greater SDSU campus community is low," said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer.A graduate student at the University of San Diego also tested positive for the virus, the university said Friday in a tweet. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An hours-long standoff between San Diego Police and a burglary suspect ended late Thursday night in the Marina area.The standoff, which started at about 4:30 p.m., occurred in the area of West Harbor Dr., between Kettner Blvd. and Pacific Highway. Police called Emergency Negotiation Team and SWAT officers, and a Psychiatric Emergency Response Team to the scene. Shortly after 11 p.m., SDPD said the San Diego Police suspect had been taken into custody.No further information was immediately available. 530

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A two-car collision killed at least one person in San Ysidro early Friday morning.According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 5:15 a.m. when a red car got off state Route 905 at the Caliente Avenue exit, then hit a sign before crashing into a black SUV.The SUV spun around and landed in a nearby ditch. That driver was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. The driver of the red vehicle died at the scene.The cause of the crash is unclear. Caliente Avenue was closed for a few hours while CHP investigated. 567
