SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There won't be a single Division 1 college football game played in San Diego this year, leaving local athletic directors searching for revenue streams.Another side effect of coronavirus-related restrictions have been cancellations across the U.S. for college athletics. The impact to some universities and college communities could total in the hundreds of millions of dollars."It can be anywhere from a million hit to a couple million dollar hit," says SDSU Athletic Director J.D. Wicker. And even if games can be played in California, restrictions on fans will leave a hole in revenue."We have tightened our belt. We've made across the board budget reductions," USD Athletic Director Bill McGillis said. "The amount of ticket-related revenue is going to be zero."McGillis adds that when the Pac-12 postponed basketball games in November and December, it cost the Toreros lucrative games at UCLA and Washington."That's a six-figure revenue loss," McGillis said.Meanwhile, Wicker is hoping to play enough football this spring to avoid losing money from a new TV deal that was supposed to kick in this fall. That deal would net the Aztecs to million per year."If we can deliver the number of games required for our TV contract, then we'll still generate that revenue," Wicker said. Both athletic directors say boosters will play a bigger role in helping both college weather the financial storm from the pandemic."The private funds that we receive from our generous donors make our programs possible," McGillis said. 1550

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There are three year-round homeless tents set up in San Diego. Their long-term future could hinge on budget hearings that began Wednesday at City Hall.Several hundred of our homeless have beds, showers, warmth, a refrigerator for their medicine, and security for awhile. That could end, though. The shelter on Sports Arena Blvd. provides solely for veterans.RELATED: Clairemont residents hope to stop homeless housing projectAnother near Father Joe's Village at 15th and Commercial is open for women and children. The Alpha Project tent, a few blocks over, welcomes men, women, and dogs.Valeria Burton has been here six months.  "It's safe. I would be on the street, sleeping in my tent on concrete with my blanket and cardboard," Burton said.RELATED: County board candidate may model "foster homeless" conceptThe veterans and women and children locations have a few openings most nights. Alpha Project, though, is at capacity every night, with waiting lists of 50 to 200, depending on the weather."Someone doesn't show up for bed check and that bed's rolled up; our outreach team goes out at 9 o'clock down the street and people cue up. We'll bring 'em in, start the process," Bob McElroy, of the Alpha Project, said. The goal is to get them into housing and jobs within a few months.RELATED: San Diego City leaders meet about homeless crisisPaying for it is part of the budget debate for fiscal '19 underway in San Diego council chambers. Money currently comes from Housing Commission reserves but what happens after that runs out?Robert Clune said he hit rock bottom after being laid off from Nassco, living on the street for years. "23 people got laid off at Nassco. I was one of them and when I hit, I didn't get up and dust myself off and keep pushing," Clune said. "I basically just laid there."It's different now. "This right here is hope, for a lot of people and the process is good for me; the doors are just opening," Clune said. He's been a painter, a cement mason, a laborer. He said he's ready to work again.  The San Diego City Council should have the budget ready by June. 2198

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three dogs are getting a second chance at life. Wednesday night they were reunited with a local Marine - after months of being apart. Marine Corps Captain Kyle Watkins has been waiting months to see the dogs he rescued as puppies while stationed in Iraq. Wendy, Hesco and Rooster were flown to the states to be adopted by Watkins and another Marine with the help of SPCA International and Operation Baghdad Pups.Watkins says he couldn't help but feed and care for the dogs, who in turn began to look out for him; their big brown eyes and wagging tails bringing comfort during some rough times. Two of the dogs will stay with Watkins and his wife on their farm in Temecula, the third will be adopted by another Marine.  776
