SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The officer who saved two twin toddlers and their dad after their father drove off Sunset Cliffs was recognized for his heroic efforts this week.San Diego Police K9 officer Jonathan Wiese was awarded the Medal of Valor and Heroic Act award from the California Surf Lifesaving Association and United States Lifesaving Association for his efforts to save the three people on June 13.SDPD received a call about a suicidal man with twin two-year-old girls driving with the intention of careening off the Coronado Bridge. Wiese was able to get the man and the two girls from the car to the shore."I could see him and he had one of the girls in his arms, and I have a two-year-old daughter at home so I imagined, what if that was my wife and kid down there? You're not going to stand there on the cliff and watch it happen," he told ABC 10News in June. "And by then four or five other cops had shown up so I pretty much threw the end of the leash to them and then I said hang on and I just jumped off."The officer also performed rescue breathing on one of the girls who was limp after being pulled from the wreck.Wiese is the same officer who helped apprehend the suspected Poway synagogue shooter in April 2019. He was on his way to meet his family for lunch on Apr. 27 when he heard a call of shots fired and immediately responded to the area."I didn't do the job to be liked every day, I didn't do it to become rich, I did it because I want to be out there making a difference and helping people, as cliche as that might sound, but I was just glad I could be there," Wiese said referring to protecting the toddlers. 2058

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There is a memorial of candles, notes, and flowers along 4th Avenue near Main Street in Chula Vista.They are in memory of 23-year-old Christina Garcia, who was found dead at a nearby field on Aug. 5th. Chula Vista police say they were called out to 3100 block of Main Street after someone found her body. They say she had an apparent gunshot wound and opened a homicide case.“That afternoon, she wanted to see her daughter and pick up the truck, so it was a brief encounter,” her mother, Lisa Garcia, said. “I expected her to come back, and I wish I took advantage of that situation longer.”Lisa says Christina leaves behind a two-year-old daughter.“I think the saddest thing for me is that her daughter is only going to know her through pictures because she’s so young,” She said. “She’s never going to remember her mom’s touch, her kiss, her voice.”Lisa says her daughter was very likable and smart.“She tested out in the 10th grade and started southwestern college and finished her classes there,” Lisa said. She was also a skilled welder and liked working with her hands. Most recently, they bought a home and worked on remodeling it.“She’s very hands-on, like her mom,” Lisa said, “you know, taking the popcorn ceiling down, remodeling the walls.”She says it’s been tough knowing Christina’s killer has not been caught. Lisa says she has many questions and is cannot find any closure without finding answers.“Was she dumped there? Was she shot there? So my brain is at 100 miles per hour trying to come up with all these scenarios,” she said.Police are asking for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward, saying they can even remain anonymous through Crime Stoppers.“There might be information out there that people think is irrelevant,” Lisa said. “But it could be very relevant to law enforcement.” 1845

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thirty years ago, an enraged socialite snuck into her ex-husband's Hillcrest home and became one of the most notorious killers in San Diego history."She was hellbent on getting her pound of flesh, hellbent on revenge," said Deputy District Attorney Richard Sachs, who was there at both hearings in which Betty Broderick was denied parole, the most recent one nearly three years ago. It was three decades ago when Broderick first captured a nation's attention as police descended on a Hillcrest mansion on Cypress Avenue."It was shocking, like we were watching a movie," said neighbor Linda Walter.RELATED: Convicted killer Betty Broderick sends card from prison to 10NewsOn that Nov. 5, 1989, around 5:30 a.m., Broderick stole her daughter's key and walked into the home, before shooting and killing her ex-husband Dan Broderick and new wife, Linda Kolkena Broderick, in their bed.In a high-profile trial, Broderick took the stand and claimed her ex-husband was abusive. The jury didn't buy it, finding her guilty on two counts of second degree murder. The case spawned numerous books and a made-for-TV movie detailing a scorned woman's escalating rage. "She had gotten into the house and grabbed some of his Armani suits and had a bonfire on the lawn," said Walter."She smashed windows, spray-painted walls, left profane messages, tried to light his home on fire ... smashed her vehicle through the front door which is why the alarm system wasn't working," said Sachs.RELATED: Convicted killer "Betty" Broderick denied paroleDecades later, Broderick would face parole hearings in 2010 and 2017. Sources tell 10News her four children were divided on whether she should get out."She was unrepentant, unremorseful, and callous," said Sachs.Sachs says in those hearings Broderick repeatedly blamed the victims."Banging her fist calling him an SOB ... apologizing to his friends, saying 'I'm sorry you lost your drinking buddy,'" said Sachs.The attitude was evident in a letter she recently wrote 10News, in response to a request for an interview. In it, she claimed she was "gang raped" by the "crooked courts," adding that her ex-husband used his power as a lawyer to "threaten" and "intimidate" her for years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Sheriff's Department says it has resumed conducting pre-pandemic evictions but continues to make that decision on a case-by-case basis.The department said in a statement that it served 12 evictions in July."The priority of enforcement focused on vacant locations or locations with reports of criminal activity. When possible, deputies conducted pre-eviction interviews and offered community resources to those who may need them at the pre-eviction interview and on the day of the lockout," SDSO's statement read.Of the 12 evictions last month, one was at a commercial property and 11 were at residential properties.Of the 11 properties, six were occupied and five were abandoned, SDSO said. In four of the six properties, deputies said criminal activities had taken place at the residences.At the fifth location, deputies say they found an elderly woman who was suffering from mental illness with health concerns and living with no heat or water. She was taken to a hospital.SDSO said the court order for the sixth location was about to expire so it had to be served.Last month, San Diego City Council leaders voted to extend a rent payback period on renters who have lost income due to COVID-19 until December 30. Renters are also required to follow the rules in leases, but landlords cannot evict a tenant for nonpayment due to COVID-19. 1380

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The owner of Waypoint Public in North Park has found a way to help his business rebound from the Coronavirus Pandemic, while also assisting other businesses to do the same.John Pani invited Dang Brothers Pizza to set up a shop inside his restaurant."I've got a 5,000 square foot restaurant," says Pani. "Doing what we were doing at Waypoint, we could have done that in a 500 square foot restaurant."Pani closed Waypoint in mid-March before County Health Officials imposed a stay at home order. During the closure, he worried about his 130 employees and wanted to find a way to put them back to work.Pani decided to reopen with a limited menu of take-out items that his chefs could prepare.Then in June, he asked a friend who runs Dang Brothers to join him."They're mostly catering and special events. They don't have a brick and mortar shop," Pani says. "I told him, 'Hey man, come set your tent up.' So we craned in a little pizza oven onto our patio and got going."Pani says the response has been fantastic. Now he wants to invite other vendors to set up in his restaurant. He thinks it could create a street-market style environment that will give people a reason to come back to North Park."We have to find a new normal," Pani says. "I don't think we're going to be packing in restaurants any time soon. At least, I personally hope we aren't..."So we have to find a way to hopefully keep businesses alive and still provide the interaction and the hospitality and the food and beverage that people want and need.
