Perez Arriaga was arrested after a dayslong manhunt as he prepared to flee to Mexico, authorities said.A casket carrying Singh's body and draped with an American flag was driven in a procession from Modesto into a theater in Newman where the marquee read "Ronil Singh Forever Remember" while several officers saluted.The casket was taken from the hearse into the theater for a viewing as the police department's 12 officers and Singh's family followed. A memorial service and burial is scheduled for Saturday in Modesto.Singh, who emigrated from his native Fiji to pursue a career in law enforcement, joined the Newman police force in 2011. The 33-year-old was married and had a 5-month-old son.Prosecutors said Perez Arriaga, 33, shot Singh after the officer stopped his vehicle to check if he was driving drunk. He has two previous drunken driving arrests, authorities said.At his first court appearance, Perez Arriaga told the judge that his real name is Paulo Virgen Mendoza, but authorities were still referring to him as Perez Arriaga in court documents. A complaint lists three aliases for him, including Paulo Virgen Mendoza.His attorney, Stephen Foley, questioned his client's mental competency, leading the court to delay the case until a mental health evaluation. New developments have surfaced in the search for a missing 3-year-old Georgia boy.Last week, police in New Mexico rescued 11 starving children, ages one to 15, who were living in squalor at a filthy compound. Among the trash and piles of junk that litters the compound in Amalia, New Mexico, authorities say they’ve found the remains of a young boy.The remains could be those of Abdul-Ghanni Wahhaj, who went missing in Georgia late last year. His fourth birthday was on Monday.Five adults were taken into custody after authorities raided the compound, where they found children living with no plumbing and rags for clothes. 632

NEW YORK -- Michael Casey is picking up the pieces after some protesters turned violent and destroyed his business, Maxwell’s Bar & Restaurant, in New York City’s Tribeca neighborhood“We had to put together a makeshift border so no more looters would come in,” he said.This former New York City firefighter served his community for 13 years. When medical issues forced Casey out of the department, he invested his life savings and built this bar with his friends and family.“My daughter’s first birthday was there,” Casey said. “Her christening was there. It was a real kick to the…it was tough.”Tough, Casey says, both emotionally and financially.Casey says COVID-19 concerns forced him to shut down his business for three months. Without any income, he wasn’t able to pay insurance on his property.“We had to pick and choose what we can pay and what we can’t pay to try to get back up on our feet,” he said. “One of the costs we were not able to incur was our insurance.”After the looting, Casey had to let go of dozens of employees. Now, he’s filing for personal bankruptcy.“We’re done. There’s too much destruction,” he said. “The bills keep piling up.
