SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Surfers and swimmers stayed away from San Diego waters after the National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory Saturday. Conditions were deemed dangerous for Southern California coastlines, with the highest waves reaching eight to ten feet in San Diego County.10News met San Diego locals Derek Janich and his daughter Kaylee at Ocean Beach. “No plans to get into the water today. Maybe on a more warm day,” Janich said. “It’s a little blown out and a little cold, lately. Definitely big surf today. You have to be careful when you’re in the water.”But out-of-towners Benjamin Guffee and his children could not resist dipping their toes in the San Diego waters. “It’s in a pool back in St. Louis, so they’re not used to this,” Guffee said. With gusty winds, water temperatures in the mid-50’s and waves jumping onto the Ocean Beach Pier, access to the pier was closed off, disappointing some visitors.“It’s normally, open — a nice walk. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- When the pandemic hit city leaders opened the San Diego Convention Center doors to house those living on the streets. But as that time will soon come to an end, the San Diego Rescue Mission is working to give those in need a safe place to stay.The transition during the pandemic was not easy.“For people experiencing homelessness, the rates of COVID have been very low, but it was absolutely a struggle,” says Paul Armstrong with the San Diego Rescue Mission.The City of San Diego recently announced its plan to close the convention center by December. The state has reserved funds to help the city buy at least one hotel to house the homeless. Unfortunately, the hotel’s 340 units won’t be enough space for everyone.“As they ramp down their operations there, we have to be mindful to make sure we’re giving as many opportunities to the people in the convention center,” says Armstrong.The San Diego Rescue Mission is stepping in to help. Team members visit the convention center a few times during the week to notify the people of their programs.Their emergency shelter is available for women and children.They also have a year-long “Mission Academy.” It’s a three-semester program. Semester one focuses on wellness. Semester two is center around education and training.“Semester three is really preparing them, letting them focus on housing and building up,” says Armstrong. “Working and building up that savings so that they can transfer into a successful, sustainable life.”The Rescue Mission says they have seen a large success rate from the students who have completed Mission Academy. 1617

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A fishing shop in Kearny Mesa was burglarized early Sunday morning. The break-in was caught on the San Diego Tackle Traders' surveillance cameras just before 4:30 a.m. The video shows two suspects, wearing masks and gloves, getting into the shop using a crowbar. The two people can be seen walking into the business, on Convoy Court, with a cooler and some type of container, heading towards the back of the shop. The owners of San Diego Tackle Traders say the suspects got away with several fishing reels and rods, a total value of ,000 to 0,00. The owners tell 10News this is a big blow to their small business. They say they work by appointment only and don't advertise their address online because of the value of the items they sell. The owners are now hoping people will keep an eye out for anyone trying to sell brand new fishing equipment. Anyone with information is asked to call the San Diego Police Department. 964

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --Three hours after returning from his deployment, Navy Lt. Eric Turner went to Seaworld. Not for the same reason as most visitors though - he was there to surprise his wife. Beckie Turner is a trainer. Hundreds of people pack in to see the "Dolphin Days" show at the park. Beckie does it every day, but Wednesday, September 13 there was something different going on backstage. "She's not expecting me, she thinks I'm on medical hold or something like that," her husband told 10News Reporter Bree Steffen.  "I hope she's not mad haha." Lt. Turner is back early from his 11-month deployment in the Middle East. The couple was reunited after he walked down the arena stairs, people cheering as Beckie got out of the water and embraced her husband. "It's nice to have him home," she said, tearing up. "Thank you all for being a part of it, it's really special." Eric and Beckie have four kids, have been married 10 years, and both of their parents served in the Navy.  1035

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Ocean Beach could be getting a new Target, but only if the big box store figures out a way to get around a decades-old parking issue with the city. News of a possible Target Express store moving into the old Antique Center building had some residents like Zeb Ryan shaking his head. “Why do we need more corporate businesses here?” Ryan said. He pointed at the nearby CVS, saying everything he would get at a new Target Express is already around the corner. Other residents agreed, saying it’s a battle of the C’s — comfort vs. convenience.“I don’t know if you’re getting any comfort from a Target,” OB resident, Drew Sibley said. “You’re getting convenience. But not character. You’re getting a bunch of red stuff”The City if San Diego said that “Red” Store has some hoops to jump through before even thinking of coming to OB.The city has a longstanding parking agreement with the former Antique Center and popular restaurant, South Beach Bar And Grille.During the Antique Center's business hours, the lot adjacent to their store was theirs. When they closed at 5 p.m., it was designated specifically for South Beach Bar and Grill patrons. So if a Target Express were to move in, that parking agreement would be grandfathered in. That means the new Target Express must close it’s doors by 5 p.m. as well, unlike many of its other stores that are open until 11 p.m. or midnight.“It sounds like a mess,” Ryan said. Ryan believes it has been a mess all along, saying the original parking agreement was odd, considering the distance between the restaurant and the lot. The two are almost two blocks apart.“It’s a far walk to South Beach [Bar and Grille],” Ryan said. “You can just park in the pier for free.”But if it keeps Target from moving in, Ryan said he was all for it.”Why don’t we turn it into like an indoor skate park or something,” Ryan asked. Target Corporation sent 10News this statement:"Target is always exploring possible locations for new stores, and we’re continuing to pursue the site on Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach.
