SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego professor is one of 55 people to make up California’s Electoral College for the 2020 election. Peter Bolland is the Chair of the Philosophy and Humanities Department at Southwestern College. He’s been at the school for 30 years and during that time taught Ammar Campa-Najjar, who is the person who selected him to become an elector.California gets 55 electors because of the 53 congressional districts and two senators. Electors are chosen by the party’s nominee who won the popular vote. Campa-Najjar got the most votes for Congress’ 50th District primary election in 2020, making him the person to choose the elector. Sure let's do it,'" said Bolland.Bolland said he’ll be flying to Sacramento on Dec. 14 to cast his vote. That vote, however, can only be for one person."I don’t even have any choice about who to vote for because California, like 48 states, is a winner-take-all state. So Biden won California, I’ll be casting my vote for Biden regardless of what my political views are," said Bolland.He added that he’s honored to be chosen in such a historic role, but acknowledges the flaws in the Electoral College system."Politically, I’ve had my concerns and questions about the Electoral College. It’s fundamentally anti-democratic," he said.The Electoral College was created by our founding fathers in 1787. They wanted to find a balance between giving too much power to the people with a simple popular vote, without giving all of the power to Congress. The Electoral College was their solution.Bolland points out that it makes some votes useless.“Last night, Joe Biden won by like 60 something percent and Trump lost by 30 something percent. But that’s a lot of people in California who voted for Trump and with the Electoral College they get erased,” he said, adding that there are Biden votes that get erased in right-leaning states as well. 2095

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Amber Robinson is a decorated army combat veteran who enlisted following Sept. 11. She served a decade as a photojournalist on three deployments in the Kunar Province, one of the most dangerous regions in Afghanistan."I was in the country when special forces went in for Osama bin Laden, watching as they took him out," Robinson said.The deployments took a toll in 2013 when she watched four young soldiers being laid to rest."I remember watching these kids and didn't want to hear anymore that they didn't make it home," said Robinson.She is now a disabled vet with an autoimmune disease and PTSD. She helped create the non-profit American History Theater, which fights for veteran's rights and raises awareness about veterans' issues, like PTSD.She says that having the freedom to vote has never meant more."I feel like it is more important than ever been people are anticipating this and are really excited to vote," Robinson said. "Be an American, that's what beautiful. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An 86-year-old man was killed crossing the street in Mira Mesa Thursday night, police say. According to San Diego Police, the crash occurred on Mira Mesa Boulevard and Aderman Avenue just before 7 p.m. Thursday. Police say the man was using a crosswalk against a red light when he was struck by a 52-year-old woman driving a 2009 Lexus sedan. The man died at the scene and the driver, who police say stayed at the scene, was uninjured. Drugs or alcohol aren’t suspected in the crash. 512

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An advisory committee made up of medical experts met Thursday virtually and recommended that the FDA authorize the Pfizer vaccine for emergency use for Americans 16 and older.The vote was 17 to 4.Hospitals across the San Diego County are preparing their staff and most vulnerable patients for the rollout of the vaccine. They are in the first groups of people to be vaccinated.The county expects to get 28,275 doses of the Pfizer vaccine next week if it gets FDA approval. The initial shipment of doses is not likely enough to meet the large demand said Dr. Davey Smith, the Chief of infectious diseases and Global Public Health at UC San Diego Health."There probably won't be enough for the frontline workers, so we even triage between the frontline workers. So who has the most contact in terms of emergency room workers, nursing staff, those on the front desk, those are the people who should and will get it first, all across the institution," Smith saidThe vaccine is expected at a time when COVID-19 infections are on the rise, and ICUs are filling up."We have hospital beds available, and ICU beds available," Smith said. "If we hit 100 percent in one unit, we're going to open up something else. We have other outside facilities with tents. We thought through this, through every single scenario.
