DETROIT — A 12-year-old girl takes a challenge and a dare that could have cost her life.It’s called the "fire challenge." Young people pour flammable liquids on their bodies and set themselves on fire.Brandi Owens says her 12-year-old daughter Timiyah Landers did the challenge with her friends last Friday.She ended up engulfed in flames. Brandi and her fiance extinguished the blaze from her baby girl and rushed her to the hospital.Timiyah is now at Children’s Hospital with second and third-degree burns over 49 percent of her body. Her mom says kids find these dangerously “outrageous” challenges on social media and Youtube. She is angry and has a message for those behind the sites that post these videos.“They need to delete this mess," Owens said fighting back tears. "It should be censored. That’s nothing that a kid should come across. I could have lost my baby, by the grace of God she’s alive. If I wasn’t home, I would have walked in to my baby dead."Owens says Timiyah knew better. DENVER – A natural gas explosion caused at least one building to partially collapse Tuesday in Denver, injuring nine people. Simon Crittle, a spokesperson for Denver Health Medical Center, said two people were transported to the hospital by ambulance after the explosion and collapse. One of the people suffered traumatic injuries in the explosion. The other person was stable Tuesday afternoon.Crittle said that several other people were being treated at the scene of the explosion and collapse and that first responders were looking for other possible victims.Denver Fire Captain Greg Pixley said the explosion was reported at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday and said several buildings were damaged in the area. One person who had been trapped was rescued by firefighters.Pixley said that crews were working to put out an active fire at the scene in addition to working to reduce the chance of other explosions in the area and further collapses. He said there were no reported deaths as of 2:10 p.m.An Xcel Energy spokeswoman on scene said all of the company equipment is intact up to the meters, meaning the explosion was likely caused by a customer. Xcel is working to turn off gas remotely. "It was just like the biggest, loudest boom I've ever heard."She said some men who had been working on her business' HVAC system ran over to help the man and another trapped woman.Another neighbor, Edward Scott, said he was on the phone with his insurance company at his nearby home when the explosion happened."[The insurance agent] was on the phone with me going, 'What happened, what happened?' and I said, 'I don't know, I think my house just blew up,'" Scott said.He said he was hit by wood debris from the explosion and that the shockwave from the blast was so intense he thought his own home had exploded. When he realized it was another home across the street, he said he walked over to the scene and saw a person rescued from the rubble."It was two people ... a lady. And then this guy picked her up and firemen carried her out of the house," Scott said. DENVER – The man accused of killing 26 people and wounding 20 others at a Texas church on Sunday bought two weapons in Colorado and at one point was charged with animal cruelty in Colorado Springs for beating and dragging his dog.Devin Patrick Kelley, 26, was living at a trailer park in Colorado Springs in 2014, according to state voter registration records.In August 2014, he was charged with animal cruelty – neglect or mistreatment. According to a police report from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, a woman called deputies just after 10 p.m. to report a Husky puppy running through the Fountain Creek RV Park, where Kelley was staying at the time.The woman reported that she had seen a man, later identified as Kelly, jump on the dog and punch it in its head and neck several times. Another man reported Kelley was yelling at the dog while hitting it, and that the dog was “yelping and whining.” Two others corroborated the story.“She stated she witnessed four to five punches and then the male suspect grabbed the dog by the neck and drug him away,” the report says.The witness said Kelley drug the dog back to a camper at lot 60, which is where Kelley was staying. When deputies went to the door of the camper, Kelley refused to come out and speak to officers, or to show them the dog.After some time, Kelley agreed to come out and talk to deputies, according to the report. One deputy said the dog appeared underweight, and a sergeant got Kelley to tell him he chased after the dog when it wouldn’t obey his commands not to run away.He further told deputies that he had jumped on top of his dog because “it was acting aggressive to another dog,” but denied beating the dog or dragging it back to the camper.Kelley was placed in a patrol vehicle and issued a summons in the case.
