SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In just hours, Rady Children's Hospital is expected to get their first shipment of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. It is unclear how many doses the hospital will receive, but once they arrive they will be stored in ultra low temperature freezers, until they are given to hospital staff. FedEx is in charge of making the historic delivery.The hospital's chief operating officer, Dr. Nicholas Holmes, says most of the hospital's staff wants to get the vaccine. It will not be mandated, since it's only approved for emergency use. The first to get the vaccine at the hospital will be front-line healthcare workers in the 1-A category. The category includes physicians, respiratory therapists, nurses, and other staff who have high chances of exposure to the virus. Dr. Holmes says a team at the hospital spent the last four days planning the logistics for distribution. Staff working in the same departments will get the vaccines on a rolling basis, just in case they experience side effects and to prevent an entire department from having to miss work at once. They’ve since recovered and are now off 40% from pre-coronavirus levels.“Little by little we are hoping that we will get back to where we were before COVID,” Goldwasser said.The City Council approved One Paseo, a residential, retail and office complex in 2015. However, a referendum from nearby residents and the mall across the street ensued. Developer Kilroy scaled back the center to its current 0 million version, which opened last year just south of Del Mar Heights Road.Now that it’s open, there are social distancing rules in place. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Included in the new defense budget bill just passed by Congress is what some call the most sweeping military housing reforms in decades. However, San Diego military families are concerned that a loophole will allow the private companies that oversee the housing developments to continue ignoring what they call "slum" conditions.10News has been digging for months into the problems reported by residents at local communities run by Lincoln Military Housing, one of the biggest companies in the industry. Residents say they have been plagued by mold, which has caused illness, as well as rodent and insect infestations, and shoddy maintenance and repairs.RELATED: .7 million awarded to Housing Commission to house military veterans"Lincoln Military Housing doesn't do a very good job of maintaining the infrastructure of these homes," says resident Erika Bradley.Bradley says the recent storms have led to more problems with leaks and mold. She says around 50 families living in the Santo Terrace community in Tierrasanta were forced to leave their homes and move into hotels.The new deal agreed to by Congress include the framework of significant reforms, including a tenant bill of rights, a strict set of regulations for how complaints should be handled, and an arbitration process that leaves the final decision in the hand of base commanders, rather than the companies. That means it's possible that it could be nearly 30 years before some of them would be forced to consider making changes."It's kind of something that looks really good on paper," Bradley says, "but how does it actually help us in our day to day lives?"10News asked if Lincoln plans to agree to the new procedures. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Mission Valley is in store to get an additional nearly 30,000 homes by 2050, according to a new plan the City Council unanimously passed Tuesday.The council voted 9-0 to pass the Mission Valley Community Plan, which would increase the number of allowed housing units in Mission Valley to 39,200. Currently, the area has about 11,200 units. The idea is to change Mission Valley's underutilized strip malls into mixed-use developments, where housing and commercial are under the same roof. "That dream, that American dream, that middle class security that is created by home ownership is now vanishing for a large segment of the population, and we can do better," said Jonathan Frankel, who heads the Mission Valley Community Planning Group. But Mission Valley is currently one of the cities most congested areas. Currently, the city says 600 people live and work in Mission Valley, but 40,000 commute in daily. As part of the plan, the city would add bridges and roads, plus an additional trolley stop and bike and walking paths. It would allow the people who do live and work in Mission Valley to get where they need to go, without a car. "The Mission Valley Community Plan Update is a no-brainer that will increase desperately needed housing stock, improve amenities for residents and will help the city meet its climate action goals,” Councilman Scott Sherman said in a statement. “I appreciate my council colleagues for approving this important community plan update.”The city aims to turn Mission Valley into a transit environment to help with the region's housing crisis and its climate action goals, a staff report says. 1654
