ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — An Escondido restaurant was closed by the county this week after its owner allegedly refused to comply with health orders.County officials issued a notice to Hernandez Hideaway to close until it is able to adhere to coronavirus-related health orders for social distancing and sanitation standards.The order states that shortly after the county authorized restaurants to reopen on May 21, the county's Department of Environmental Health conducted an inspection on May 29 and found social distancing and sanitation protocols were not in place, and employees were not wearing facial coverings.On June 12, 21, and 23, San Diego Sheriff's deputies visited the restaurant and asked for voluntary compliance.Owner Rick Stevens declined to comment to ABC 10News."Mr. Stevens admitted that he was not compliant and state he will continue to operate without these COVID preventative measures and will not require staff to wear face coverings," the ordered stated, referencing a June 23 visit by county officials.In order to reopen, the restaurant will have to prepare a revised reopening plan and submit it to the county for approval.This is the county's second restaurant forced to close in violation of health orders. In May, Pacific Beach's El Prez was closed by the county after social media videos surfaced showing crowds of guests, many not social distancing or wearing facial coverings. El Prez has since reopened with new policies to ensure it adheres to the public health orders on distancing, masks, and sanitation. 1550

(KGTV) -- An Encinitas family is thanking surfing legend Laird Hamilton after they say he rescued them during a flood while on vacation in Kauai.The Gwilliam family says they were enjoying a normal vacation on the island when, like usual, it started to rain.The family says they weren’t worried until the heavy rain got even heavier. “It was the type of rain that was so heavy, we would say there’s no way I could get worse," recouted Erin Gwilliam. "Then it got worse."The family says so much rain had fallen, the ground was no longer absorbing the water. That’s when the trouble started.Erin and her husband Jamas took photos of the homes all around them, some of which collapsed from the strong floodwaters.The only bridge in and out of the small town of Hanalei was covered by several feet of water. By the end of their trip, not only had the Gwilliam family run out of food, they also needed to catch their flight.The family was almost out of time when a friend called with a plan. The plan? Big-wave surfer Laird Hamilton.Erin says her family was a little star struck. "Being in the same boat as him was a little intimidating, but he didn't let that be, it was just like hurry get on we gotta go.”Hamilton took them to safety across the river and to a dock where the family was able to drive to the airport.Erin says she is thankful the surfer came to save them from a dangerous situation. “The ocean and water is his life he was so comfortable and confident in what he was doing, he was extremely capable, having him get you out it was a huge relief.”Due to the severe damage, Hamilton and his wife have set up a GoFundMe account to raise money. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Graffiti referencing the New Zealand mass shooting that left 50 people dead was discovered at the scene of a possible arson at an Escondido mosque early Sunday morning. According to police, the fire started around 3:30 a.m. at the Islamic Center of Escondido located near the intersection of 6th Avenue and Escondido Boulevard. Police believe members of the mosque were able to extinguish the flames before firefighters arrived. Seven people were inside when the fire was reportedly set. No one was injured and minimal damage was done to the building, according to police. "Our message to community is to make sure they keep a watchful eye out,'' Escondido Police Lt. Chris Lick said. "If they see something suspicious, especially around a house of worship, they should call police.''According to police, graffiti left behind by the suspect made reference to the mass shooting in New Zealand, though details on the graffiti weren't available. Police tell 10News they are investigating the incident as attempted arson and a possible hate crime. No suspects have been identified at this time. Following the fire, members of the mosque scheduled an interfaith prayer vigil. The event will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Islamic Center of Escondido. "Once again, we will stand together in love and prayer as we show our unified support for the members of this local Mosque and for the Muslim community at large.
