Greg Abbott called for action on Friday in the wake of a deadly school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas."We need to do more than just pray for the victims and their families," said Abbott, a Republican, during a news conference in response to the shooting. TANGIER, Va. – At just over one square mile, tiny Tangier, home to less than 500 people, sits surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia.No roads can get you there. The easiest way to travel to the island is via one of the daily ferries, popular with adventurous day trippers, who want a peek at how people have lived here for centuries.“It's all about the seafood,” said Mayor James Eskridge, better known by his nickname, Ooker. “It's a close-knit community.”That closeness, though, became a potential threat earlier this year, when the coronavirus began spreading throughout the country.“We were like most of the country: we were didn't know what it was going to amount to, how dangerous it was, how you would hear one thing about it and you would hear something else and so people were worried,” Eskridge said.They were especially worried because more than 40% of the people who live on Tangier are elderly, a population vulnerable to the virus. What’s more, there’s only a small clinic on the island and no full-time doctor.So, they made a few tough choices.The ferry services temporarily shut down, effectively isolating the island, and so did another thing at the heart of life there.On the island, church is everything. Right after the coronavirus outbreak began in March, they stopped services for months and that may have been what helped keep the virus at bay.So far, there have been zero coronavirus cases on the island.“It's like one big family here. Your problem is my problem,” said Nancy Creedle, a parishioner at the island’s Swain Memorial Methodist Church, who also works in the church office.She said people took the virus seriously and though church services started up again, there have been some changes.“We marked the pews and people had to wear masks,” Creedle said.Being socially distant doesn’t come naturally there, but they’re trying.“Tangier, just like the country, you need to be cautious, but you can't completely shut down because I think that would do more harm than the virus itself,” Eskridge said.The island is back open for business. Ferry services started up again in mid-June, with an average less than 50 people visiting a day. TELLER COUNTY, Colo. – A two-day search of the home of Kelsey Berreth’s fiancé in Florissant, Colorado turned up no sign of the missing woman, Chief of Police Miles J. De Young said Sunday.About 75 people from multiple jurisdictions searched the 35-acre home of Patrick Frazee Saturday, hoping to find any new clues that would provide answers into the Woodland Park, Colorado woman’s mysterious disappearance. Frazee, who has not been ruled out as a suspect in the case, continues to cooperate with police during the investigation, according to his lawyer.“We still have not found Kelsey,” De Young said in the latest press release from law enforcement.The search, which at one point involved the help of a backhoe, was completed Saturday and the property was turned over to Frazee.Investigators are continuing to conduct interviews as De Young stressed the case “remains our number one priority.”Details about what investigators were searching for at the home have not been released. 1022

SYMMES TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- An Ohio man on Thursday kidnapped an 84-year-old woman at knifepoint, stole money from her and forced her to chauffeur him to a drug deal, according to a news release from the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.Hamilton County Sheriff Jim Neil said authorities believe Brent Engel, 31, cornered and threatened the victim when she returned to her car after shopping at a CVS in Loveland, Ohio. Engel then forced the woman to drive to an ATM, withdraw money and drive him to purchase drugs, which he then used in the car.After five hours of ordering the victim to drive him around Hamilton County, Engel exited the vehicle and escaped, Neil said.The woman was not hurt in the incident. Engel, whose records include prior convictions for burglary, theft and drug use as well as an affiliation with a gang, now faces charges of aggravated robbery and abduction. He had not been arrested by Friday night.Neil said civilians with information about Engel's whereabouts should alert authorities immediately. Because of his gang affiliation, he “should be considered dangerous," and members of the public should not approach him. 1176
