SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Jodie Grenier joined the United States Marine Corps right out of high school, serving two tours in Iraq as part of the invasion in 2003 and the following year as an intelligence analyst in Falluja."My job was very meaningful and purposeful to me," said Grenier. "I fused information from all different sources; whether it was sniper teams, unmanned aerial vehicles, sensors on the ground, and really built a picture to brief unit commanders and mitigate threats to our troops."Grenier had tremendous responsibility but says the transition to civilian life was difficult."Finding employment. Having odd questions about whether I contributed as maybe the same as my male counterparts. It was a bit frustrating," she said.In her search for a new direction, Grenier came across a listing posted by Military Women in Need, a Southern California nonprofit founded in 1920 as a housing association for widows and war nurses. The group was looking for a new leader and with a passion for helping others, Grenier stepped in. She also gave them a new identity."The first thing I asked was, when are you going to change that awful name? Because 'Military Women In Need' just did not embody the spirit of the corps or the warrior spirit that I think resides in all of our veterans," said Grenier.The Foundation for Women Warriors was born with a new respect for the contributions and sacrifices being made by women in the military, while still recognizing the unique challenges they can face."We provide emergency financial assistance, childcare assistance, professional development, and more recently we opened up a warehouse to offset critical costs like baby wipes, formula, and diapers," Grenier says.As for that professional development, Grenier says their workshops don't pigeonhole; featuring a spectrum of employers."Whether it's finance, tech, aerospace, it can be trades. We've had Anderson Plumbing come and speak about HVAC and plumbing," she added.There are classes on negotiating salary and benefits, facing financial challenges like rent and childcare, and flexible work schedules for single parents. The support reaches some 1,300 local women and children a year."It's a community that I am a part of," says Grenier. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police are reminding families who may care for an at-risk loved one to have a plan if they become lost.Officers said Saturday that a woman named "Lupe" disappeared from her home recently and was lost before a neighbor who noticed her called police.SDPD Southern Division officer McClain responded to the call and stayed with Lupe as other officers searched the area to try and get her back home, according to police. An officer eventually found a residence with an open door, which was Lupe's home.Instead of transporting her back home in a police vehicle, and possibly confusing or scaring the woman, SDPD said McClain, "figured it was time to get his steps in and walked Lupe back to her residence." There, she was reunited with her family.SDPD said the incident highlighted the need for families to make sure loved ones with medical or mental issues have an ID bracelet with their basic information, address, and emergency contact if they become lost.The Alzheimer's Association says families can prevent a loved one from wandering away from home by identifying times they are likely to wander and plan activities, ensure basic meets are met, use devices to signal when a door or window opens, and regularly supervise them. The group says families can plan for the possibility of someone wandering away from home by asking neighbors to call if they see the person alone, know where a person could likely go to if they leave the home alone, and familiarize themselves with the neighborhood and any possible hazards there may be. 1568

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego is giving dockless scooters and bikes preferred parkingThe city is in the process of installing 330 rideshare scooter and bike spaces throughout downtown. The first few of them have been spotted in Cortez Hill. “I think it’s smart,” said Carlos Navarro who work at a restaurant in the Gaslamp “they drive by our store — running into the customers or hit the cars that are parked.” The city says the spaces are being placed at red zones where cars cannot park. “It’s not going to be as crowded or cluttered,” said scooter rider Autumn McFeeley, “the city must really like them.” A class action lawsuit was filed against the city earlier this year claiming San Diego has failed to maintain pathways for people with disabilities. “Allowing there to to be safe storage and parking for those vehicles off the sidewalk is a much better approach, said Colin Parent with Circulate San Diego, “it’ll help minimize those kinds of conflicts” The city of San Diego says more information will be made available about this project in coming days. 1069

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Restaurants up and down 5th Avenue in the Gaslamp District are gearing up for yet another three days of crowded on-street dining.This upcoming weekend will see 24 eateries offering service on the asphalt, up from the original eight that participating during the launch on June 18. But as they bask in the opportunity, restaurants on surrounding streets are asking - what about them?"It's a ghost town, especially at night," said Patrizia Bronchi, who owns Operacaffe on Fourth Avenue. "I'm really scared to have to close the restaurant because it's not possible to go on like this."Bronchi says revenue at Operacaffe is down more than 70 percent. She depends on crowds from the Balboa Theater across the street and visitors to hotels and conventions. All of that is nonexistent amid the Coronavirus outbreak.Bronchi says she is happy that 5th Avenue restaurants are seeing the increased business, but that the crowds are not spilling over onto 4th Avenue. Michael Trimble, who heads the Gaslamp Quarter Association, says the group cannot also close 4th and 6th Avenues due to traffic concerns.However, he said the association wants to help with new marketing, decorative lighting and parklets - such as replacing some parking spaces with permanent outdoor dining areas. "We really are trying to do what we can to support all of the merchants in the Gaslamp Quarter," he said. On Thursday to Saturday, 5th Avenue will be closed from L to F streets to allow on-street dining. During the second weekend of July, the number of participating restaurants will expand to 27. 1595

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego has unveiled its first new trolley station in over a decade as city leaders gathered to celebrate Friday.The Courthouse Station is located at the south side of C Street between State and Union streets.The station will replace the American Plaza station as the new endpoint to Metropolitan Transit System’s Orange Line.The first new station since 2005 began to serve passengers Sunday. Aside from being located outside the city’s new 22-story courthouse, the station is located within close access to 44,500 jobs.Construction of the new station began in August. 598
