SAN DIEGO — An aging shopping center right across from one of San Diego's most luxurious could be in for a major revitalization project.The 31-year-old Costa Verde shopping center is right across from the modern Westfield UTC. The center, at the corner of Genesee and Nobel, serves the community with grocery stores, places to eat, exercise, and get gas and dry cleaning. However, it has several vacancies and there are always empty parking spaces. Now, it appears to be in for a major overhaul that would help it fit right in with Westfield UTC. Owner Regency Centers is moving toward tearing down the entire mall, except for the McDonalds and gas station/car wash on the southwest end. It would then rebuild the retail portion, with the same community serving stores. But, this time, it would add a 200-room business hotel, and 400,000 square-feet of biotech office space, partnering with Alexandria Real Estate."The neighborhood is the most dynamic neighborhood, not only in San Diego County, not only in Southern California, not even on the west coast," said John Murphy, who is leading the project for Regency Centers. "It is one of the most dynamic pieces of property in the country."The San Diego Planning Commission unanimously recommended the project for approval Thursday. It will next go before the City Council, likely in October. If all goes as planned, ground could break in 2021, with the retail portion ready by the holidays of 2023. 1458

SAN DIEGO — Democratic Congressman Mike Levin appears poised to keep his seat in the House of Representatives, according a scientific poll released Tuesday.The ABC-10News Union-Tribune poll showed Levin ahead of Republican Brian Maryott 49 to 37 in the 49th Congressional District, which stretches from Del Mar into southern Orange County. Levin, a first-term Congressman, defeated Republican Diane Harkey in 2018, flipping the seat longheld by Republican Darrell Issa, who decided not to seek re-election amid changing voter demographics. "We're going to do everything we can to leave no stone unturned for the next 50 days or so to make sure that we keep the 49th this coming November," Levin said. Democrats now outnumber Republicans in the district by about 3 percent. The SurveyUSA poll shows, however, that 13 percent of Republicans surveyed said they planned to vote for Levin. Meanwhile, just 2 percent of Democrats said they'd support Maryott. "If it was 25 percent or higher I would say something's going on," said political analyst John Dadian. "(Levin's) been an incumbent for two years, his challenger is an elected official but not in a good majority of the region."Maryott said it was still early in the race and that he and his campaign are working to get their message out. "People are just really starting to tune in now. Obviously Mike has name recognition that we don't, but we're out there talking to people everyday," said Maryott. Maryott said he would continue to push a message that Levin is to the extreme left of the Democratic Party. Levin said he expects attacks like that this campaign season but stands by his record. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 26-year-old motorcyclist was killed Saturday after losing control of his bike, hitting the center median curb and continuing across the lanes of Scripps Poway Parkway in the Miramar Ranch area, San Diego police said.The crash took place on the Scripps Poway Parkway, near 11800 Spruce Run Dr., at 1 a.m., SDPD Officer J. Buttle said.The motorcyclist riding a 2017 Yamaha was moving at a high rate of speed, and failed to negotiate the rightward bend in the road, Buttle said. The man ended up along the south curb line.He was pronounced dead at the scene, Buttle said. -SAN CLEMENTE ISLAND (CNS) - The remains of seven U.S. Marines and a Navy sailor were recovered Friday after going missing near San Clemente Island when their amphibious vehicle sank during a training mission last month.The remains were recovered during underwater salvage operations, the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force announced Friday evening. The remains will be transferred to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to be prepared for burial."Our hearts and thoughts of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit are with the families of our recovered Marines and Sailor," said Col. Christopher Bronzi, commanding officer of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit. "We hope the successful recovery of our fallen warriors brings some measure of comfort."The U.S. military announced Tuesday it had located the amphibious assault vehicle that sank last week off the coast of San Diego County, killing nine young servicemen, and confirmed the presence of human remains where the vessel came to rest on the sea floor.The naval Undersea Rescue Command made the discovery near San Clemente Island on Monday using video systems remotely operated aboard the HOS Dominator, a merchant vessel whose crew specializes in undersea search and rescue.The amphibious troop-transport vehicle was en route to a waiting ship during a maritime training mission about 80 miles west of Encinitas when it foundered for unknown reasons about 5:45 p.m. July 30, according to Lt. Gen. Joseph Osterman, commanding general of I MEF.The 26-ton vessel went down roughly 1,600 yards from a beach on the northwest side of the island in water nearly 400 feet deep.Seven members of the Camp Pendleton-based crew survived the accident. Medics took two of them to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where both were admitted in critical status. One was upgraded to stable condition as of Sunday night.The other five rescued Marines received clean bills of health and returned to their units.Pronounced dead at the scene of the accident was Lance Cpl.
