The rock sits about 60 feet off Sunset Cliff Boulevard in the ocean. This is the fifth sculpture to go up there.Statutes of this sort have become an annual ritual, but it remains unknown who makes the pieces, and how they get up there. Other sculptures include a pterodactyl, a giant crab, a Christmas tree and a tiki head. 546
President Donald Trump will announce his decision on whether the US will pull out of the Iran nuclear accord at 2 p.m. ET on Tuesday, he wrote in a tweet."I will be announcing my decision on the Iran Deal tomorrow from the White House," he wrote Monday afternoon.Trump is weighing whether to continue waiving sanctions on the energy and banking sector that were lifted as part of the 2015 agreement.European allies -- including the United Kingdom, France and Germany -- have encouraged Trump to remain part of the deal while acknowledging the agreement's flaws. They have worked to develop an ancillary agreement that addresses Iran's ballistic missile program and its support for terrorism. 699
President Trump confirmed to reported in the White House Tuesday that he had called Russian President Vladimir Putin to congratulate him on his re-election."I had a call with President Putin and congratulated him on the victory, his electoral victory," Trump said. "The call had to do, also, with the fact that we will probably get together in the not too distant future so that we can ... discuss the arms race."Trump also made comments discussing increased military spending, and said he would also discuss issues relating to Ukraine and North Korea if he were to meet with Putin.Putin was re-elected as Russia's president Sunday, an election he won with 76 percent of the vote — an election that watchdogs said was far from fair but cleaner than in years past.Watch Trump's full comments in the video below. 823
President-elect Joe Biden has asked Dr. Anthony Fauci to remain in his role at the National Institutes of Health, and to become a chief medical adviser to the Biden administration. "I asked him to stay on the exact same role he's had for the past several presidents, and I asked him to be a chief medical adviser for me as well, and be part of the Covid team," Biden said Thursday during a joint interview with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on CNN. Earlier in the day, Dr. Fauci said he planned on staying in his role as Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, a position he's held since 1984 under several presidents. He has become a recognizable face and scientific voice of reason and warning in 2020 as a member of the White House coronavirus task force and frequent media guest to talk about the current state of the pandemic, next steps and hope for the future. It was during an interview with CBS News’ Major Garrett that Fauci made the comment he fully expects to stay on at the NIH. He also said he was looking forward to Thursday afternoon's first virtual meeting with Biden and his coronavirus team.Fauci has had a rocky relationship with President Donald Trump, as the president flouted recommendations from Fauci and other health leaders. Biden said his incoming chief of staff, Ron Klain, worked with Dr. Fauci during the Ebola crisis in 2014 and had been talking to him "all the time."During media interviews Thursday, Fauci also addressed comments some have made about the FDA not approving the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine for emergency use yet, even though the UK’s equivalent has.“We have the gold standard of a regulatory approach with the FDA,” Fauci said on Fox News Thursday. “The U.K. did not do it as carefully, they got a couple of days ahead. I don’t think that makes much difference. We’ll be there very soon.”Biden is expected to announce his picks for health positions next week, including the leads at the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 2069
President Donald Trump says he did not address reports from U.S. intelligence agencies that said Russia paid bounties to the Taliban in exchange for the deaths of American soldiers in a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week.Trump made the comments in an on-camera interview with Axios reporter Jonathan Swan.Trump said his July 23 phone call with Putin was a call "to discuss other things," particularly nuclear proliferation. The president also claimed that the report "never made it to his desk," even though several media outlets have spoken to administration officials that have said the report was included in a daily intelligence briefing in February.Trump also referred to the intelligence as "fake news," and added that "a lot of people are saying that it's a fake issue."When pressed on intelligence reports that Russia has supplied weapons to the Taliban, Trump seemed to justify the Russians' actions by citing the fact that the U.S. sold weapons to the Taliban when the group was fighting the Soviet Union decades ago. Trump also claimed that those reports had also "not reached his desk," despite Sec. of State Mike Pompeo's comments denouncing the arms sales earlier this month. When asked directly if he reads his daily intelligence briefing, Trump said he "reads a lot" and that he "comprehends extraordinarily well, probably better than anyone (Swan) has interviewed in a long time."Watch Trump's interview in the player below. 1471
