LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV)-- A new article shows that wearing masks is even more critical than previously thought. UC San Diego researchers compiled several global studies that looked into how the coronavirus spreads and found that masks can help stop the spread of many aerosol particles.The idea of wearing masks has become a polarized issue in America. But Dr. Kim Prather, a distinguished professor at the UCSD Scripps Institution of Oceanography, says the science is clear."Masks do filter things, and filtering does reduce the spread of disease. That we know," Dr. Prather said. She and her colleagues released a new article compiling the latest COVID-19 studies around the world. Sneezing and coughing release large spit particles up to 26 feet, so that is clearly a point of concern. But Dr. Prather says we also need to focus on the invisible aerosols that can float around for hours, from asymptomatic virus carriers. "They don't have a fever, they're not coughing, they're not sneezing," Dr. Prather said. "But when they're talking, they can produce thousands of aerosols out in their breath, and infect people for days."That is why she reiterates that wearing masks is imperative."You wear a mask not to protect yourself. You wear a mask because you're being thoughtful and protecting other people," Dr. Prather said. One of the studies compares COVID-19 numbers between Taiwan and New York, which share a similar population. While New York had more than 353,000 positive cases and 24,000 deaths by the time Dr. Prather's paper was published, Taiwan only saw around 440 cases and seven deaths. Dr. Prather attributes Taiwan's drastically low numbers, partly to the quickly enacted masking orders. "Taiwan never shut down. They just wore masks," Dr. Prather said. So what kind of facial masks are most efficient? Dr. Prather says one that fits your face properly would protect you the best. Tightly knit, multi-layered cloth masks are good to rewash and reuse. Bandanas can leave many gaps between the contours of your face, which is why it may not be as effective in blocking out particles. Whatever the style, Dr. Prather says that you see the mask moving up and down while breathing, it is a sign that it is working. The more we protect ourselves now, the quicker we can return to normal. "We can get back to a functioning society if we wear masks," Dr. Prather said. "Until tests come in to play or a vaccine comes into place, it'll buy us time, and we can reduce the spread if we take this seriously."Dr. Prather says that while masks do not block 100% of aerosol particles, it is much better to block some than none. 2638

Lisa Palmer, a former student at Hunter College in New York, hasn't taken classes or paid tuition since 2016, but she's still living the college lifestyle.According to the New York Post, Palmer has continued to live in her dorm room, despite repeated demands that she vacate. Palmer originally enrolled at Hunter College in 2010, after briefly attending St. John's University in New York. In 2016, Hunter College claims that Palmer dropped out of school — but Palmer maintains that the school wouldn't allow her to register for classes after she disputed her tuition bill.But even after Palmer stopped taking classes, she remained in her 100-square-foot dorm room. She continued to live in the room despite receiving an eviction notice in June 2016. Hunter College stepped up the fight in fall 2017, when an attorney sent a letter to Palmer requiring her to vacate the premises by Oct. 31.Palmer told the Post she will continue to fight the eviction — despite saying that she feels dorm life is "really lonely" for someone in her 30s. The case is currently being weighed by the Manhattan Supreme Court.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. They had to close a some of the lanes for about an hour while crews worked to clear the debris.Campus police told 10News that clogged drains may have been the cause for most of the flooding.Staff members at the Student Health and Wellness Center say water got into the building. LA MESA (KGTV) -- A businessman attacked a group of reporters on a La Mesa sidewalk. It all started with reports of lewd acts outside his business.La Mesa Police Department investigators are looking into harassment claims after a disturbing video captured outside a local business circulated online. A snap shot from that video appears to show a man and a woman outside Peter's Men Apparel, a local men's clothing retailer on La Mesa Blvd. over the weekend.The man in the video appears to have his hands up a woman's shirt.REPORT: La Mesa Police looking into harassment claims at local businessPolice said they've received at least two crime reports — one for battery and one for lewd act in public — in regards to separate incidents at the store on Saturday, Jan. 18.News crews returned to area near where the incident occurred to talk with the owner at Peter's Men Apparel. A man outside of the store started assaulting a photographer and then began hitting another reporter, which resulted in a brief fight.Video from the attack shows the man cursing at everyone, attacking a photographer, and slapping a phone out of reporter's hand before walking into the store.La Mesa police officers responded to the scene and are working with the reporters to gather information about the attack.The crews that were assaulted will be pressing charges.As for the incidents over the weekend, police haven't named the suspect. La Mesa investigators have not identified the man in the video.10News reporter Mimi Elkalla spoke with the owner of Peter's Men Apparel, Peter Carzis, on Monday and he seemed to laugh off the situation regarding the lewd video. He said he knew it was inappropriate, but didn't see what the big deal was and claimed the woman came onto him.Police were also looking into reports that the owner spit on a man as he was walking down La Mesa Blvd with his wife on Saturday. (KGTV) - Eleven months of waiting and one month of planning led to the moment that brought everyone in the Mount Vernon Preschool classroom to tears.Private First Class in the Army National Guard Brian Salazar served his first deployment in Qatar. He's a combat engineer based out of National City. His wife Krystal painstakingly planned a reunion in their 4-year-old daughter's classroom, to surprise her. Brian's parents, among other family were inside too.His mother, Maria Salazar, said in Spanish she thought of him every time she went to sleep, every time she ate and wondered if he ate or not, if he was suffering or not, these thoughts constantly ran through her mind."I did have those moments where I really missed him and I'd cry myself to sleep knowing that he wasn't there," Krystal said.Brian was focused on his little girl Annabel, "hopefully she's as excited to see me as I am her," he said minutes before walking through the door. His mom saw him first, letting out a joyful laugh and bursting to tears. It took Annabel a few seconds to realize what was happening, soon as she realized the man in the camouflage uniform was her dad, she ran and jumped over classmates to get to him. They collapsed into a group hug and sobbed with joy.The embrace lasting minutes as they held firmly to him, affirming to themselves he's truly home. The first words came from Annabel. He asked if she missed him and she squeaked out a quiet response echoing his words.The emotion bringing everyone in the classroom to applaud.Annabel showed her dad she made an art project of a soldier who mirrored him.
