MACAO, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao announced Saturday that China will launch a series of measures between 2010 and 2013, which were aimed at helping boost the development of less-developed Portuguese-speaking countries.Wen announced the measures when delivering his speech at the opening ceremony of the third Ministerial Conference of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese- Speaking Countries here in Macao on Saturday.Under the new measures, financial institutions from the Chinese mainland and Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) will set up a one-billion-U.S.-dollar development fund for cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, in a bid to push forward the financial cooperation between the two sides.The Chinese government will also provide those African and Asian Portuguese-speaking countries that participated in the third Ministerial Conference of the Forum with 1.6 billion yuan (242 million U.S. dollars) worth of loans on favorable terms within a bilateral framework.The new measures will also see China provide equipments, technical personnel, etc. to the countries, supporting a bilateral agricultural cooperation with each of the African and Asian Portuguese-speaking countries that participated in the third Ministerial Conference of the Forum.Sponsored by China's Ministry of Commerce and hosted by the government of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), the forum was created in Macao in 2003, with the joint participation of seven Portuguese-speaking countries, namely Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal and Timor-Leste.

BEIJING, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's central bank warned about the risk of credit card related bad debt on Thursday as money owed 180 days past the due date was on the rise in the third quarter.Credit cards debt 180 days past the due repayment date stood at 7.92 billion yuan (1.19 billion U.S. dollars) by the end of the third quarter, up 8.5 percent from the second quarter, according to a statement released Thursday on the website of the People's Bank of China.Taking this into account, the central bank warned commercial banks to pay close attention to risks associated with credit card related bad debt.Money owed 180 days past the due repayment date accounted for 2.1 percent of the total amount of debt by the end of the third quarter, down 0.4 percentage point from the second quarter, according to the statement.

BEIJING, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- A survey conducted by an information center affiliated to Beijing's commerce bureau revealed that retail sales jumped at more than 3,500 stores in the Chinese capital during the 3-day New Year holiday ending Monday, nearly reaching 2.5 billion yuan (about 378 million U.S. dollars), up 17.1 percent from the same period last year.The Beijing Commercial Information Consultation Center surveyed 3,568 stores in Beijing regarding their sales volumes during the past three days, finding that various holiday promotions had brought notable results, pushing up sales to over 2.49 billion yuan.The survey results also showed that consumers in Beijing were passionate about buying gold, since gold prices have kept rising during the past year. Consumers buy gold for investment purposes or to preserve their personal wealth amid the rising Consumer Price Index.Sales volumes at the Caishikou Department Store, which is famous for its gold products, surged 64.1 percent during this holiday from one year earlier.Besides gold, consumers also showed great interest in rabbit-figured toys and commodities with rabbit pictures on them, as 2011 is the year of rabbit in traditional Chinese culture.

BRUSSELS, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) and China Monday signed an agreement aimed at enhancing cooperation in the field of disaster risk management between the two sides.European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva and visiting Chinese State Councilor Ma Kai witnessed the signing ceremony of the agreement for a joint project totaling 9 million euros (11.7 million U.S. dollars), among which 6 millions euros (7. 8 million U.S. dollars) will come from the EU.As the first bilateral project in disaster prevention, it is aimed at strengthening China's disaster management system with the support of the EU and its member states.EU Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva (R) shakes hands with visiting Chinese State Councilor Ma Kai in Brussels, capital of Belgium, on Nov. 29, 2010. BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang and U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu Tuesday called for stronger energy cooperation between the two countries.At a meeting in Beijing, Li said China and the United States had broad agreement and a common interest in maintaining energy security and promoting the development of clean energy.He said the fast growth of China's new energy industry provided great opportunities for foreign companies.Li hoped the two sides would strengthen communication and exchanges, deepen pragmatic cooperation in energy, and expand their clean energy cooperation.Chu said the United States attached importance to energy cooperation with China and would endeavor to promote bilateral programs.He called for joint efforts from the two sides in construction of a clean energy research center, and hoped they would promote joint research and development, and technology innovation.
