SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One country that was hit especially hard early on during this coronavirus pandemic was Italy.A former San Diego resident living in Milan said things have finally started returning to normal after a strict lockdown that lasted longer than two months.“There’s a feeling of hope,” said Bea Pesenti. “Obviously now it’s in a rebuilding phase.”Pesenti and her fiancé, Wilson, moved from San Diego to Milan in August of 2019. 10News first interviewed Pesenti in March when Italy was struggling with the spread of COVID-19.“We have been in the heart of it,” she said. “When I spoke to you last, the situation felt really dramatic because we really were in ground zero.”The couple was holed up in their Milan apartment for more than two months.“We were in a very, very severe lockdown,” she explained. “You heard the sirens, and you really just felt this heavy energy.”Fast forward today, Pesenti said she finally sees a return to a sense of normalcy.“The lockdown has ended, the businesses have reopened,” she said. “We immediately saw family because that was the priority for us. Kind of enjoyed being able to take bike rides and going to the park but still limiting our contact.”She said businesses have new safety guidelines in place, and face masks are required in public.There were 70 deaths reported in the country on Thursday, a drastic drop from the 919 reported on March 27.“I think people really needed to have this easement and get back to life,” she said. “Not only from an economic standpoint but being locked in your house for 80 days is just unnatural.”Pesenti hopes things will go smoothly as more of the country begins reopening.“We haven’t had this second wave, so to speak, so hopefully it continues this way,” she said.And she has a piece of advice for San Diegans as our restrictions start to loosen, “I hope people really, really think hard and make the right decisions even as things ease up, still be mindful and considerate of other people’s comfort level.”A restriction on travel between Italian regions is expected to be lifted in early June, however, officials warn that could change if there is a spike in the number of positive COVID-19 cases. 2195

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - New restrictions going into effect Sunday night limit restaurants, wineries and breweries to take out only, making them brace for the next three weeks.The new stay-at-home orders mandated by Governor Gavin Newsom were triggered due to the rapidly increasing number of hospitalizations from the coronavirus.Mike Hess, Chief Brewing Officer at Mike Hess Brewing, estimated this will be the fifth time his breweries have to shut down across San Diego."I've kinda lost track of the dates and times, I know we're just doing what we need to do to keep going," he said.Each time, he's reinvented the business, making hand sanitizer, selling canned beer to go and adding COVID-19 safety measures in order to reopen."This is tough, it's very hard on a business. It's very hard to manage a business that is reliant on a certain amount of cash flow and business operations," Hess said.Starting Monday they'll shut down again. This time he's transforming some of their outdoor seating at their Imperial Beach location into a drive through lane."People can cruise right in to that orange cone barricade, go right around Elm, right back up Ocean and pick up their tacos and beer right out of the back door which is right where the food comes out of the kitchen anyway so it's going to be piping hot," he said.Hess added the North Park location will also have a drive through option. He hopes they see enough take out customers in the next three weeks, the length the new orders last, to avoid any furloughs this holiday season."We have 80 families that work for Mike Hess Brewing and they're relying on us for a paycheck so the shut down is having a big effect," he said.Hess is frustrated the new restrictions target the restaurant industry when retail is allowed to open in a limited capacity.He is still holding a "Joy Drive" for the Jesse Rees Foundation, donating 25% of gift card sales through December 21st. 1927

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Rain created slick streets Wednesday afternoon, slowing traffic to a standstill in some areas and causing crashes in others. Video captured by 10News shows children and an adult climbing out of a vehicle on northbound Interstate 15 near Interstate 8 after their SUV overturned. Good Samaritans and a California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer helped rescue two boys and a man from the vehicle. CHP cautioned drivers to slow down and pay attention as rain continued to drench the county. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Neighbors said the officer-involved-shooting in the South Crest area of San Diego, all started with a machete attack between acquaintances. It was a frightening scene on Boston Avenue Wednesday afternoon. A man was seen lying on the street, clutching his bloody head. Neighbors said he was beaten over the head with a machete. According to San Diego Police, the first 911 call came in at around 5:15 pm.RELATED: Police investigating fatal officer-involved shooting in Southcrest10News spoke to a man who lives at the home where the attack happened. He said the attacker is his sister's boyfriend. He said the boyfriend came over to the house and got into an argument with a family friend over a dog chain. The boyfriend then grabbed a machete and began striking the victim over the head, then to the rest of his body. First responders soon took the victim to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.After the attack, witnesses said they saw the attacker run westbound on Boston Ave., then north onto 40th street. That is where a San Diego Police officer confronted him. The officer first fired a taser to try to mitigate the situation. However, the department spokesperson said the taser was deemed "ineffective." The officer then shot the attacker at least once. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.Those who know the machete-wielding man said he is usually a nice person. But he had been acting up lately. Neighbors said they saw him swinging around a bat a day before the attack. While they knew he had violent tendencies, no one thought it would escalate to this level.  1631

Junior Achievement of San Diego County hosted the Helix High class of seniors at their Finance Park. "These are all seniors getting ready to go into the real world, this is a program getting them real-world ready," said Valerie Hash, Capstone Manager for Junior Achievement. In the four-hour crash course, students become adults for the day, complete with a salary, family, education, and debt. Once they have that information, they use their tablets to plan, budget, and save. "The number one thing I hear is kids are expensive! And I tell them, yes you are! So then they understand all the decisions their family has to make in order to make their life awesome and possible," said Hash. When taking out loans and making other purchases, students see real-world San Diego costs. So we want to make sure students see that. Yes, you're going to make more money, things are going to be more expensive, how do you mitigate that?
