LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A car burst into flames after a crash in La Mesa early Sunday morning. According to California Highway Patrol, the crash happened on SR-94 near the 125 before 3:30 a.m. CHP says the driver was speeding on SR-94 west when he tried merging onto the 125 on-ramp. The man then lost control and flipped several times before the car went up in flames. Witnesses stopped to help, but the man was able to get out of the vehicle on his own. The driver was able to escape the crash with only minor injuries. CHP says he is being checked for DUI. Traffic was shut down on the 125 on-ramp for a short time after the crash, but was reopened before 6 a.m. 676

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — More changes could be coming to the "free drink" system in Las Vegas casinos.There is special technology on table-top machines, such as video poker, that monitors when you earn a comped drink. Now, gamblers may see it on slot machines, too.Ardent Progressive Systems and Games has already installed its technology on about 90 slot machines at The Riverside Resort in Laughlin.It's considered a trial run for a couple months to see how it goes."The hope now is, the trial down in Laughlin will be successful and then we've got several properties that are waiting to see the results of that and possibly implementing it in the near future up here in Las Vegas," said Albert Tabola with Ardent Progressive Systems and Games.The technology is a strip of LED lights that faces you while you play. Red means you're not ready for a drink. Green means you are ready for a drink. Yellow means you're getting close to qualifying for a drink. Orange means you're playing too slowly and falling off track."You will know as you play whether you qualify for a complimentary drink or not, as will the cocktail waitress," Tabola said.Players do not have to play max bet to qualify for a drink. They ust need to consistently play."The qualification levels on there are very, very low so this should not affect anybody that plays for the most part, at all," he said. LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - The future of organ transportation may be passing through La Jolla. Physicians at Scripps Green Hospital recently moved a donated liver from Escondido to La Jolla in a new transport system before successfully transplanting it into a police officer. The effort was part of a clinical trial evaluating the transportation system, known as OCS (Organ Care System) Liver, at several major transplant medical centers across the United States. “It’s almost like putting the organ back in the body right away,” said Christopher Marsh, M.D, organ transplant surgeon and division head of Scripps Center for Organ and Cell Transplantation. The OCS is relatively larger than a microwave and pumps oxygenated blood along with other nutrients to the livers in transit. “We are constantly challenged by a shortage of livers to meet the transplant needs of our patients,” added Marsh, “warm perfusion transportation has the potential to expand the supply of organs that are available to our patients and, as a result, improve the chances of a successful transplant and a positive long-term health outcome for more of our patients.” Scripps expect to enroll nine more patients using the mechanical system in the clinical trial over the next year. 1263

LARGO, Fla. — While many of us have spent the year wishing things were better, 93-year-old Virgil Sweet has spent the year trying to make it better.Sweet started by giving away his ,200 government stimulus check."I thought, 'I don’t really have a need for that so I’m going to give it to someone who does,'" said Sweet. ABC Action News did a previous story in May to help Sweet get the word out that he was asking people impacted by the pandemic to write him letters about why they needed the money. That story reached people all over the country. Letters poured in from people who needed help and Sweet picked one family to get his check."I found a lady who has two children. One of them is autistic and she has brain cancer so she got the ,200," said Sweet.But Sweet couldn’t stop thinking about the other heartbreaking letters. So he asked others to donate their checks to help. "We did it the old fashioned way, snail mail. We didn’t use email. We didn’t use TikTok or any of that stuff I don’t know anything about," said Sweet.Sweet got donations from California to Pennsylvania, from Alaska to Florida.He raised ,780 for more than 60 families across the country — and he did it from the comfort of his own home using mail as his main source of communication.Sweet says there are still many people in need and he hopes his story shows people you can make a difference no matter what age or what tools you have."You just have to have the passion to help people and you can do it from sitting in your own home," said Sweet.This story was first reported by Wendi Lane at WFTS in Tampa Bay, Florida. 1653

LA MESA, Calif. (CNS) - Three people armed with handguns shot at a business and a vehicle in La Mesa, but no one was struck by the gunfire, police said Wednesday.The shooting happened shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday on El Cajon Boulevard just west of Parks Avenue, La Mesa police Lt. Brian Stoney said.The target of the shooting was an occupied business in a strip mall, Stoney said. The business' front window was shattered by the gunfire. The lieutenant did not disclose the name of the business."This appears to be an isolated incident," Stoney said Tuesday. "And although the suspects should be considered armed and dangerous, we do not believe there is any further threat in this immediate area right now."At least four men were inside the business when officer arrived, but were uninjured, the lieutenant said, adding that the men were detained for questioning.Officers spotted a vehicle driving away from the business with several bullet holes in its windshield, he said. Officers stopped the vehicle and also detained its two occupants, both men, for questioning.Witnesses told police they saw three people armed with handguns open fire on the business and the vehicle before fleeing in a vehicle, described only as a dark SUV, Stoney said.
