SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Gas and Electric said Tuesday night that the company has started work to restore power in certain areas. The company says wind in certain parts of the county has died down and employees are beginning to inspect power lines before turning power back on. To see when SDG&E expects to turn power back on in your area, click here. The company shut off power to nearly 30,000 customers Tuesday morning due to a public safety shut-off or unplanned outages due to high winds, the utility company reported.  By Tuesday night, that number dropped to about 18,600 customers."Before nightfall (Tuesday), we worked to expedite the process to begin restoring power to some customers impacted by today’s strong weather event. SDG&E crews and contract firefighters helped patrol power lines to ensure they were safe and free of debris, so we could begin safely restoring power. This same process will begin at daylight (Wednesday), starting with areas of the county that are not expected to see high wind speeds (on Wednesday)," an SDG&E spokesperson told 10News in an email.“We recognize how inconvenient it is to be without power. "Today, I stand in front of you as the first person of person of color and LGTBQ person to ascend to our city's highest office," Gloria said in a virtual ceremony. Gloria and five new council members were sworn in during a virtual ceremony Thursday due to the COVID 19 outbreak. Gloria is a Democrat, as are the five new councilmembers also sworn in. The Democrats now have an 8 to 1 advantage on the City Council. But even if there is political harmony, the challenges facing the city are grand.They are taking over with the region in a mandatory stay at home order due to the virus. Small businesses are shuttering, unemployment is near 8 percent, and the city could face a 4 million dollar budget shortfall next fiscal year."There are some things that people say you shouldn't touch, such as police, fire that type of thing, but if this continues on for another year, this COVID, who knows what the city budget is going to look like," said political analyst John Dadian.But in a brief speech, Gloria expressed confidence in getting San Diego back on its feet."We will be rolling out an aggressive strategy to address the worsening public health crisis in COVID-19, the economic crisis that is impacting San Diego's families, small businesses and our city budget, the housing and homelessness crisis that has become even more dire," Gloria said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County will launch a new public awareness campaign this week on COVID-19 as the number of community coronavirus outbreaks increased by three, to a total of 10 in the past seven days, officials reported Monday.Two other triggers involving the growth of new cases and the positivity rate of tests are "not moving in the right direction," said Supervisor Nathan Fletcher."These are concerning numbers," Fletcher said. "They're concerning because they clearly represent an increase in community spread and number of cases tied to our reopening and the fact that more people are out doing more things." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego leaders are asking the state to provide guidance on how the city can reopen the convention center safely during the pandemic.Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Councilmember Chris Cate signed on to the letter requesting that Gov. Gavin Newsom provide rules to reopen the convention center, which has been shuttered since March.According to the city, because of the coronavirus pandemic, the convention center has lost out on more than 100 events between March and December of this year. That factors out to a loss of about 7.8 million in direct attendee spending and .2 billion regional impact.Cate says guidelines to safely reopen convention centers have been awaiting Newsom's approval since June, and must be approved by November in order to host events in 2021 — many events that are already in jeopardy."We are respectfully requesting that the Governor approves the Safe Reopening Guidelines for convention centers statewide. These guidelines were submitted to his office in June. When conventions can reopen is just as critical as how they will be allowed to resume, and the state should be proactive in approving these guidelines well in advance. The world’s fifth-largest economy cannot turn on a dime and this guidance has been thoughtfully developed with an emphasis on public health and safety by leaders in the industry," Cate said in a statement.(See the letter here.)Last fiscal year, the convention center hosted 143 events that generated 5.3 million in direct attendee spending, million in hotel and sales tax revenue, and .3 billion in regional impact.Leaders say the city relies on tax revenue generated by conventions and visitors who stay in the region.Though during the pandemic, the convention center has become a different necessity. The property was transformed into a temporary shelter for the city's homeless population. Since April 1, about 1,100 individuals experiencing homelessness have been sheltered at the center per day. The city says that through its Operation Shelter to Home program, it has helped 525 people find housing to transfer into support housing, longer-term housing, rentals, living with friends or family, or rapid rehousing.Recently, the city also purchased two hotels — a Residence Inn on Hotel Circle and a Residence Inn in Kearny Mesa — to transform into housing units with supportive services as another method to bring individuals off the street. 2442
